We welcome migratory game Nancy who had Friday off, and occasional gamers Bill and Mitch.

In most games tonight there was somebody playing the game for the first time. This is great - the group in general likes introducing games to people.

If you are interested in learning new games (or just like playing your favorites), you are welcome to our events. We meet most weeks and have a game day most months (next one is February 4). Our full schedule is available at http://www.boardgames.meetup.com/495

Nancy played this at the last all day game day (and won) and was interested in trying it again. Mandi and Bill were new to the game.

I did better than my last play, but still not great. Nancy wins game 2 out of 2.

Surprising finish for Nate the Machine, but I guess the scores were quite close.

While waiting for Nate, Travis and Amy taught this game to Mitch. Nate was more interested in shorter games, so they played 3 player.

Mitch got a a LOT of points for connections in the Rail Era. But Travis was able to flip FIVE (!) cotton mills in one action, including some tech level 4 (12 VP) mills.

Travis 153
Mitch 149
Amy 128

I risked it all on going for the fifth cotton mill at the tail end of the rail era. I was taking loans and had a net loss during the income stage for four of the final five rounds. If either Mitch or Amy had shipped anything additional to the distant market I probably would have run out of demand for the fifth sale.

Mitch was Rich Uncle Pennybags with plenty of brass in pocket. Amy picked up some nice income, too, in the final rounds.

Playing this last night was enjoyable, especially after playing a handful of games online against new opponents (which school me.)

Mitch had an unflipped Iron Works. He possibly could have got more points by devloping (flipping the Iron works) than in building rail links.

Not sure about that. Level 4 Iron Works is worth nine points, and he double-built rail links for his last action that were four and five points apiece, I believe. Unless both rail links were worth four points, which then would have gained him one more point for building Iron Works instead...

I think his best play would have been to build a second shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness. I believe he may have had sufficient income and cash on hand to make it happen. I couldn't block his access to Barrow-in-Furness (I had both buildings in Lancaster and only needed to place a rail link between Lancaster and Preston to stop him) since I was cash-strapped working on my five cotton mill sale.

For a first play, Mitch was right in the hunt and nearly pulled out the win. He did present yet another strategy that could win: coal and iron domination sprinkled with a fair amount of rail links and a shipyard. His cotton mill sales were very small in comparison to both mine and Amy's as well as his other activities.

More people should be playing this great game!

Ahh, but he had at least one rail link to the Iron Works, so there is a point. Plus a double build costs at least 15 which is a point and a half.
(Possibly 20 with the coal costs whis is 2 points)

I'm not saying it was sure thing, just that it might have been a better move.

Somehow it's comforting to know that even Nate has an off night once in a while...
