I frequently see questions asked about what games can be played with just a single player, and while there have been several other lists created for this purpose, I aim to make this the definitive list. Please add any games I may have missed.

The two questions I always ask when looking at games are; "What's this about?" and, "Is this solitaire only, or can I play it with others?" To answer these questions, I have listed a brief summary of each game (stolen from the game's page) and listed the number of players supported.

All comments are welcome and appreciated.

Shafted is a quick and portable game for 1-4 players that is easy to learn. Assembling the game consists of printing and cutting out six sheets of tiles and a sheet for the player screen/aids. (Tile backs are optional.)

To assemble the game you will also need to provide your own:

Other required components:
4 Miners (six-sided dice) - one of each player color. Use a permanent marker to change the "6" side to a zero on each die.
60 node markers - 15 of each player color
60 gems - 20 of each gem color (blue, red, yellow)
30 refined gems - 10 of each color, each one represents 5 gems of that color
(use beads, coins, cubes, disks, or other bits to represent the node markers and gems)

Description:

Players explore caverns and mine the mystical gems contained within. Nodes within the caverns contain a supply of each of the 3 types of gems: Red, Blue, and Yellow. Players can only mine each node once and the color they choose is then unavailable to the other players for that node. The gems are used to perform the three actions in the game: Red - mine, Blue - refill movement points, Yellow - reveal a new cavern. The game ends when a player reaches the master chamber (center) and then exits the mine. Scoring consists of multiplying your least common gems by 3 and then adding that to your most common gems.

Tile Example:

VPG's very popular Victory Point Games States of Siege Series ventures into World War Two for the first time. The entire Pacific War in about 60 minutes, solitaire, 48 card deck (separated into three epochs), 3 Resource Tracks (Army-Navy, Prestige, and Oil), and a customized Battle Table for key engagements throughout the war.

Option to play the historical deck (i.e., cards in numbered order), or a shuffled deck for plenty of chaos and surprise. The game is designed to offer the perspective of the Japanese during the conflict, and it is very challenging.

The game was result of a dedicated, total team effort and is available for release starting today, 11/25/10.

You are Giraffe the hero of this game and you arrived in a small inn. Suddenly during the night something was attacking the inn. It’s a horde of ZOMBIES!!!. Nobody survive except you and the inn keeper’s daughter, Mari-chan. Survive the game in 3 nights without anyone dying.

This game is inspired by the genre tower of defense, where a horde of zombie, comes and attack the inn wave by wave. Your job is to control Giraffe, Mari-chan and occasionally Dogmeat by moving them through the inn, defending against the zombies, set barricade, buy stuff to upgrade and protecting Mari-chan while surviving yourself.

You need at least 1 six sided-die (the more the faster the game goes), 4 counters(different kind or colour) in which 1 of them represent zombie (which you need at least 7), a pencil and an eraser to jot down equipment, hp, bp and so on.

You command a single Sherman tank (17 possible models) as you and your crew campaign across Western Europe. Each day you see action, you equip and ammo up your tank and plan your march through the sector. If the tables dictate possible combat, the game moves into a tactical mode. Each combat turn, you assign actions to each of your crew and maneuver your tank into an advantageous position (or try to run away if there's a Panther out there). As you survive encounters, your crew becomes better skilled at the particular set of actions they can take.

You can play single missions, but the real fun is the campaign version where you try to last across 8 months of combat.

You are a survivor of a zombie apocalypse and you're stuck on a house with a useless car and hordes of zombies attacking from the lawn. But wait, you found a tool enough to fix the car to escape the hordes of zombies. ARE YOU READY FOR IT?

Escape of the dead is a solo game. In the game you are trying to fix the car while defending yourself against hordes of zombies. You're given 4 Action dice per turn, distribute between 3 sections of the game (either by shooting zombie, fixing the barricade and/or fixing the car). Roll for success on each section. Any zombie that survived will attack the barricade. When you successfully killed 10 zombies you will be rewarded with power-up. You lose when your barricade is down (i.e barricade's hp equals zero). You win when the car is fixed 100% and get out of the house.

K2 is a wonderful mountain climbing game for 1-5 players and varying difficulty levels.
In the solo game you can choose to climb the easier or harder side of K2 in either summer (easier) or winter (harder) weather. This creates 4 levels of difficulty, making it perfectly adjustable to your experience/skill level. The game is a combination of hand management (climbing and acclimatization cards) and point to point movement (up or down the mountain). The game can become quite a puzzle, in which you have to decide among other things:
- How many climbers start climbing straight away?
- How long to wait before climbing the 1st? and the 2nd?
- When should the 1st rush to the top (and back)? and the 2nd?
- Where and when do I build a tent? Do I build a second tent?
- Which risk token value should I choose now (and thus not have to use later on).
- To whom and to what do I apply the risktoken?
- etc.

I've played the solo game a couple of times and it's a challenge everytime to get both your climbers to the top AND (most importantly) stay alive. So far I've only managed to accomplish this once in the easiest level and was relatively close in two harder ones. I haven't played the toughest level yet, but I heard it's challenging as hell.

I find this game to work best as a solo despite the box displaying 1-4 players. It's a co-op game but works the same for a solo game. It took me a few plays to warm up to this one though. It seemed impossible to escape but after playing a few times, I've gotten the hang of the game enough to give me a good chance to escape. It also has harder rules for those who are really good at the game.

A game of gardening and necromancy for one player. You play as Jasper the White Mage who is attempting to protect his prize-winning pumpkins from the onslaught of his neighbor Zot's undead army. The game plays like a cross between Space Invaders and Puyo-Pop as Jasper runs back and forth along his garden path turning the approaching zombies into dainty white flowers and then setting them on fire. Earn points for large chains while you try to survive both waves with at least one pumpkin intact.

Jasper and Zot is a one page PnP game. You only need to print a single page of components and supply two six-sided dice. The game won first place from among over thirty other games in the recent single-page game design contest here on BGG.
