I frequently see questions asked about what games can be played with just a single player, and while there have been several other lists created for this purpose, I aim to make this the definitive list. Please add any games I may have missed.

The two questions I always ask when looking at games are; "What's this about?" and, "Is this solitaire only, or can I play it with others?" To answer these questions, I have listed a brief summary of each game (stolen from the game's page) and listed the number of players supported.

All comments are welcome and appreciated.

3-6 players (1-2 player rules in the rulebook)

long the lines of History of the World by Avalon Hill, players cycle through a series of european civilizations as they attempt to score the most points using the civilization's special powers. The game is set in Europe and each player is provided with a pool of wooden tokens to represent their civilizations. Each player selects a combination of civilization tiles, which give his civilization special abilities or characteristics. Players expand their empire through territorial expansion, often at the expense of other players. The key to the game lies in chosing when to decline your currently played-out civ to get a new one which will keep generating points. Play continues with the cycling of civilizations until a certain score is reached whereupon final rounds are played and a victor is determined.

1 or 2 players

A solitaire and two-player simulation of the night naval battles off Guadalcanal. In the solitaire version, you command the US fleet, awaiting the emergence of the Tokyo Express from the darkness. You group your ships into formations, assigning them orders, and select the targets to attack with torpedoes and guns. Simple mechanisms control Japanese maneuvers and target assignments in a realistic manner. You never know when combat will occur until the explosion of torpedo salvos signals the presence of Japanese forces who detected you first and made their surprise attacks. The two-player version modifies the solitaire game and pits players against each other in an exciting recreation of World War II naval combat.

Wargame covering the American air raids over Northern Vietnam. The solitaire rules specify how to play the defending DRV units, so that the player doesn't have to attempt to honestly play both sides of the conflict. (Though, even without the solitaire rules it's fairly easy to play both sides solo, since after the game has been set up, the strategy for the DRV (except flying the MiGs) is primarily reactive.)

A very indepth (argueably the most indepth) Fantasy Adventure game. Very complicated, many rules and tons of the old time chits. This said, the game can be enourmously fun and entertaining. The game says that it can play with between 2-16 players, but the game can win. This means that it can be played Solo and you can still lose. I have played a couple times solo and I still really enjoyed the game. It takes a long time to play, so it is the perfect game for a Solo adventure where you really want the game to feel like a good adventure book. It has meat that you can sink your teeth into.

In this fairly light tile-laying offering, players pull a tile from the pool and then place it against one of the previously played tiles. If you create a new object (like a city, road or a monastery), then you can place one of your control markers on the tile to denote your control. Alternately, you can place your marker in the pasture on the tile as a farmer. Markers (called Followers by the publisher and called Meeples by us) cannot directly compete when placed, so to achieve some gains you must place your marker, then use later tiles to connect up to it.

1914: Opening Moves is a simple solitaire game where the gamer plays the German, and the game system plays the allies. The object of the game is to get enough victory points (VP) to win. VP can be gained by holding VP hexes on the western front (on the map, vs. the western allies), and through rolls simulating developments on the eastern front (vs. Russia). The game lasts a total of five turns, representing mid-August to early September, 1914, the most fluid period in the west during the Great War.
