I frequently see questions asked about what games can be played with just a single player, and while there have been several other lists created for this purpose, I aim to make this the definitive list. Please add any games I may have missed.

The two questions I always ask when looking at games are; "What's this about?" and, "Is this solitaire only, or can I play it with others?" To answer these questions, I have listed a brief summary of each game (stolen from the game's page) and listed the number of players supported.

All comments are welcome and appreciated.

Quote:
A game simulating Arctic exploration and the race for the North Pole in the years 1845-1910. Players choose an explorer, ship, and crew, and outfit their expedition. Terrain cards take the place of a map, so each expedition encounters variable terrain on their journey north. Once the ice is reached, they proceed on foot or by sled as far as they dare, limited by bad food, weather, crevasses, scurvy, deep snow, and mutiny. Due to the "you against the elements" nature of the expeditions, player interaction is minimized, making for an excellent solitaire game. Three solitaire scenarios are included, as well as the 2 to 5 player competition game that includes disaster card play and newspaper attacks on your opponents. Rulesbook, 195 cards, player aid charts, and expedition log sheets are included. Will you reach the pole and return ahead of Peary, or end up icebound and abandoned like Franklin?

It's also possible to lose your ship and be forced to try riding home on an iceberg!

Actually best solo, since there is no direct interaction between the players.

Another Uwe Rosenberg great game, designed for 1-4 players. So far, I've only played solo and it's a bit fiddly because you need a neutral board/player to help you build things, but I do really like this game.

When playing solo the goal is to make 500 points, by building settlements and buildings (each one with a point value), and craft several goodies that are worth points. My personal record so far is only 292, but I'm still learning.

For 1-3 players.

You command a team (or teams with an optional buddy) of specialists tasked with taking down a card-driven insurgency in an urban environment. Or you could grab another friend to take on the role of the insurgents. Can be played cooperatively with two players taking on the AI insurgents, or competitively as the two players attempt to be the first to complete the mission (or against a human insurgent).

Simple rules make this a great entry-level war game (as well as easy to pick up and play after resting on the shelf for a while). There's not a lot of depth but its an enjoyable romp.

This looks interesting. 1-6 player racing game. It appears to be about getting the best time as opposed to crossing the finish line first (though technically you are crossing the finish line first if you got the best time).

A modular board, weather conditions, and 19 different vehicles (each with their own handling) should offer a decent amount of replay. It also would be very suitable for play by forum.

Doesn't have a US distributor yet, but I know I'll be keeping an eye out for it.

I found this game on the network by chance. The theme is escaping from an old mental state and be free of the dark pieces of the madness. It's a co-op game with modular map and event / item cards. You must collect items to scape and hide from the shadows that lurk the place.

I have not yet completed every chapters, but I am running my own solo campaign though this game and so far I enjoy it immensely. Note that set up is required though (10 minutes), but the story is quite fetching so once the "work" is done, it's easy to get lost in the game, even alone.

I still hate that this list isn't sorted either by rank or alphabetically. It makes it only useful if you already know the list well, and there are other lists I'll send newcomers too before this one. However using a useful suggestion by another member of BGG

I sorted the list by title to check to see if a game I wanted to play solo was here.

But while I was wasting 30 minutes trying to sort through what is here I couldn't see Witch of Salem. As a co-op it is easily adapted as a solo.

I'd suggest as a solo it should be played with you having 2 or 3 characters who have distinct turns (but not 4), and no changing of turn order (so like an ordinary game).

I'd also suggest to lessen the advantage you have of seeing all the revealed rift/wall tokens, a single witch of either type or any 2 witches cause a reshuffle of all unsealed tiles.

Ra starts on the 2 player space and your scoring marker starts at 0.

Pharoah track - do not place a starting marker, just add 1 marker each time a die shows a pharoah. Each cube counts as 1 point and they are all removed after scoring.

Monuments - there are no bonuses for having multiple markers in a column (this only works when playing 2p+). However, for each colour that has no monument you lose 5 points at the end of the game.

Disasters - if 4 dice show the sun symbol the 5th die is then re-rolled. The disasters are as follows:
Monument - remove 2 monument markers
Pharoah - remove 2 pharoah markers
Nile - remove 1 nile marker
Civalisation - remove 1 marker
Sun or Ankh - lose 2 points

If markers cannot be removed lose 1 point for each.

Play 3 rounds as usual.

Move your Pharoah cube just like in the official game. At the end of an epoch, if you have at least 6 Pharoahs, you score 10 points. Otherwise, zero. They are then cleared so your goal next epoch will be another 6.

This has the effect that after you have passed the threshold, more Pharoahs don't help...which is not entirely different from a non-solo game where your opponents cede the Pharoah victory to you. I suppose instead of clearing the Pharoahs at the end of an epoch, you could just move the token back 6 spaces (never past zero), so having extra Pharoahs would be useful. You could never have more than 12 Pharoahs.

Another possible variation would be to have a dummy opponent Pharoah token that moves random amounts at various times, so the goal would not always be exactly six. I think this would be better, but I haven't yet figured out a good mechanism.

A different variation would be to score the normal bonus for the number of columns, and then score 5 points if you have at least one block in each of 3 colors, 10 if you have 4 colors, and 15 if you have all 5 colors. The problem is that at the end of each of my games, I had about 15 monuments, so it's hard not to cover all 5 colors.
