The Adult Male Slumber Party (AMSP) is a gathering of friends every 3-4 months that spends an entire weekend gaming and just hanging out. Most of us went to college at either the University of Iowa or Iowa State.

We have spread out around the Midwest after graduating. The AMSP gives us all a great reason to get back together and catch up while playing some great games. The group usually meets in either New London or Waterloo, Iowa.

This AMSP was hosted by Adam and his family in Waterloo. Thanks again my friend for opening your house to all of us and being such a gracious host.

We had 7 gamers attend including: Aaron, Adam (DNose), Matt, Chad, Paul, Dan and myself.

We did something a bit different at this AMSP. One of our friends in Waterloo was hosting a family friendly game day on Saturday. We decided to join forces and attended that game day for part of Saturday. As a result this GL will not contain all of the games played during the weekend. When the Waterloo game day list is posted I'll link to it in order to have a complete list of all games played during the AMSP.

We kicked off the AMSP at about 8 PM Friday evening with a 5 player game of Tribune. I really enjoy this game but can't seem to get it to the table very often.

Players: Adam, Chad, Dan, DJ, Matt

Matt picked up a sneaky win in this one. It was close as always. I know at least Paul and myself were close to the win conditions. Paul seemed to be blocking Adam at every turn and Dan playing the game for the first time was just trying to get a feel for the game. A fun start to the weekend.

Chad and Aaron arrived near the end of Tribune so we had our full compliment of 7 gamers. We wanted to get some games in with the entire group and Chad was pushing this one hard.

It's basically the adult version of Apples to Apples. Good for 30 minutes of laughs every once in a while I suppose.

This one is quickly becoming a favorite at the AMSP. We played 2 games in a row.

Game 1 went to the spies: Chad, Aaron and Dan

Playing the game for the first time, Dan did an excellent job of pretending to be ignorant to screw us as a spy. After knowing Dan for so long and how sharp he is, I really should have known better.

Game 2 went to the resistance: Adam, Dan, DJ, Paul

This one was a rather lame session. All 3 spy members happened to be sitting in a row. The teams picked never had a spy member and it was a quick 3 wins for the resistance with little the spies could do.

Wanting to get one more game in with all 7 of us this one was suggested. After a few plays I'm not the biggest fan and even less so with 7 but it plays quickly so I wasn't going to object.

Adam pulled out the win by a couple of points over Paul.

While the rest of the guys headed for bed, Matt and Paul were willing to stay up to play a learning game of Helvetia with me. I recently purchased this one from a geekbuddy but had not yet had the chance to play it.

It's a nice little game despite a couple of rules issues and continued struggles to tell the difference between the male and female villagers. Matt pulled out the win by doing a great job of using the trader and always being a step ahead of me in exactly the same goods. I attempted to switch gears after realizing this was going to be the case and went for the VP buildings instead. I finished with 20 on the last turn but couldn't catch Matt as he finished with 25. Paul was right behind me with 18 I believe.

After the game we discovered that we had used the exchange buildings wrong. Since this benefited Matt the most as he had a few of these buildings this places a major * on this win!

Adam, Dan and I got up earlier than the rest of the guys. After visiting for a while I talked them into playing this new acquisition with me.

It was a learning game for all of us. Despite a rather simple set of rules this game packed a surprising amount of game. Worker placement with route placing are key aspects of the game. There is an inverted play order deal going on with some of the actions as well which created a neat element. You might be the first to place a worker for an action and thus get more of that particular action. However, when it comes to actually carrying out the actions the order is inverted. That is, the last player to place a worker in that particular area will be the first to carry it out but have less of that action to use. Thus committing a worker early gives you more of an action (more bus lines to place, more buildings, etc.) but it's at the expense of the other players taking their actions first and perhaps blocking you from what you wanted to do.

I also really enjoyed how the timing mechanism of the game worked to dictate where the passengers needed to be (home, work, pub). Then add to that the players are using actions to actually place the locations of the buildings around on the board and there is suddenly a lot to juggle. Plenty of opportunity to screw over each other.

I appreciated how tight the game is since you only have 20ish actions which are gone after you use them. You simply can't afford to waste any of them. This all serves to create lots of tension and fun decisions to wrestle with.

I pulled out a win over Dan on the tie breaker. Adam was a couple of points behind us but if the game had gone just 1 more turn he likely would have pulled ahead.

Aaron and Matt ended up waking up and joining us. We had about an hour till we needed to head over to the game day so we decided Hanabi would be a good fit.

Aaron and Dan had never played so after a quick rules explanation we were off. We ended up with a final score of 20. Not bad with a group with 2 new players. We would have scored more but Matt misinterpreted a clue from Adam early in the game and ended up discarding the 2 multi-colored card. Ouch!

We headed over to the Waterloo game day and I talked the guys into playing another newly acquired game. We were joined by non-AMSP member Steve for a 6P game of Warriors and Traders.

We had a very rough start to this one. In part it was my fault as I had just received the game 2-3 days before and had not internalized the rules as much as I needed to. I will say though that the rules really leave something to be desired. Once we got rolling in the game we didn't find it to be nearly so hard as what we feared.

Aaron ended up winning it on turn 7 or 8 with 29 VPs. The rest of us were clustered up between 24-26. Aaron had taken the warrior route on his tech tree and used it to basically crush Steve and gobble up some needed VP to push him to the win.

The game was a bit of a disapointment to me but the rest of the guys enjoyed it. Besides the rules mess I was hoping for a bit more out of the tech trees and I was also expecting a bit more of an epic arch to the game. You have very limited actions in the game (2 per round-max 10 round game) which really limits you. It's not a bad game just a bit different than what I was looking for.

That being said even with a horrible start we played a 6 player game with all new players in 3 hours. I'm certain our next could be done in 2 hours so I'll probably keep it around to at least give it another play or two.

All the AMSP guys jumped into various games with the Waterloo crowd. I taught 3 players Lancaster.

Jason ended up edging me out by 1 point for the win. A very tense and enjoyable session. Despite being all new players it appeared that everyone caught on very quickly and there was a lot of competition for various areas in the game.

I've really enjoyed my 3 plays of the game so far. My biggest concern at this point is the power of the nobles. The game seems to force you to at least keep pace on nobles or have no shot at winning. That could simply be a lack of experience on my part. I'd love to be proven wrong on this.

I avoided playing this one after hearing some negative feedback about the rules. I did pass that on and we printed off the newest version of the rules which the guys said made the game smoother.

The only thing I really know is that Aaron was the player that started infected. Adam was the last remaining player that was not infected and had locked himself in some computer room to stay safe. At the end he made an unsuccessful dash to destroy the hive.

I guided Chad and Dan in a learning game of Tinners' Trail. This is a terrific medium weight game that I really need to play more. I jumped out to a bit of an early lead by investing more in round 1. Dan and Chad kept battling back but I was able to really rob a sweet mine away in turn 3 that I was able to make a lot of money off of. I ended up winning by around 12 with Dan and Chad within 1-2 points of each other.

Once again Matt, Paul and I decided to stay up later for one more game. We were all a bit fried and decided to go with something we were already familiar with. I jumped out to a quick lead but Matt had a huge turn near the end that let him snag 2 pieces away from me that I thought I had locked up. That was enough to push him ahead for the win. I always enjoy Samurai. It's a classic as far as I'm concerned.

Sadly, Sunday morning Aaron and Chad had to hit the road really early. Dan had breakfast and chatted for a while but then he also had to head home. That left Adam, Matt, Paul and myself. We decided to end the AMSP with a game of Extrablatt. This one has quickly become a favorite and I'm very glad to have purchased a copy from another BGG user. It's really a damn shame that this one isn't widely available.

We ended up having a rather close game with the spread from 1st to last only being around 80k I believe. In what would prove to be the last couple of turns I was able to grab a couple of key articles that I was able to place in my headliner section. That gave me the headliner bonus (60k) plus some huge scores for the articles (60k each). That proved to be enough to push me to the win.
