Yes, the title says it all. There has been a lot of back and forth about Kickstarter, the new hotness, etc. Well, as a hobby gamer who only recently got into the hobby about two years ago, I've lately found that my new hotness are those evergreen titles that are rarely spoken about. This list will include games that are still readily available after ten years that still can hold their own against the newer, more complex, more thematic games with cooler components. Two things I want to clarify before I begin though:

-I am primarily a Euro gamer, which is why this list is devoted to Euros. Nothing against Wargames and Thematic titles.

-I am only listing titles I have played. If you see a glaring omission, it is probably because I haven't played that game, so you can feel free to add it.

With that in mind, which do you think are better, the evergreens or the new hotness?

I re-introduced this game to our group about 3 weeks ago, with one new player, and we fell in love with it all over again. Its cover illustration is not exactly 'sexy', but this is an incredible game.

In stark contrast, Euro games published in the last two to three years fail to keep my interest. The biggest problem seems to be an overemphasis on graphic presentation and component bling, at the cost of game design emphasizing replayability.

I'm almost sure this new direction is a bid to attract more casual gamers to the fold, but as long as older games are being re-printed, I'll try to stop myself from complaining

Now if I can only locate a copy of San Marco to try out...

Great game. I would have added it, but it did not yet fit the criteria.

This is a brilliant one with 2 or 4 players. In my experience, 3 lacks challenge, while 5 is a brain-burny, chaotic mess of a good time.

Rather forgettable game. We loved it at first, but very quickly tired of it. Has gathered dust since. Many new euros beat this up preetty severely - I never liked the winning conditions, produced an anti-climax.

Having said that, must play again to see if, like the original poster, we enjoy it after 5+ years of it sitting on my shelf.

Other than I'm the Boss (which may be old enough to go on this list), this is the best negotiation game I've played. The problem with this game is it takes a lot of time and sometimes the last round can be anti-climatic.

In my experience, this French game was one of the first ones to combine wargames and euro mechanics. It's got action points, pick up and deliver, diceless combat, victory points, and a set number of turns. And it's a wargame! Thanks to the metal bits, it is easy to get to the table, and I think it is still a blast to play. And this game would even fall under "Twenty Year Old Euros..."

No, the crane I borrowed from the junk yard helped me get it to the table. Seriously though, folks who were not enthused about playing the game became so after I opened the box and showed them the metal "eye candy". I just remembered the slight engineering flaw: trying to put those little colored plastic markers on the pieces!

Twelve years old and I still love playing it. Bought it the year it was released and must have played it 70+ times.

For a 40 minute game, this offers incredibly tough tactical choices. Can be cut throat, as you can cut opponents off completely from scoring their cardinals, so you have to observe all plays carefully. Matched only by 7 Wonders as a 40 minute thriller.

Very good gate way game, but also decent with eurosnoots.

China wasn't bad, a more forgiving map than Web of Power and three cards to choose from (if I remember) so no problems getting doubles. Felt a bit simpler, not as cutthroat. I prefer Web of Power, however.

No reason for either not to see table time though - so quick! China can take 30 minutes if you play fast.

Its been mentioned earlier, but noone put it up on the GL.

I just found it at the thrift store recent and wow is it good! Tense for both sides with a fun coop element for the detectives and a nasty push your luck hidden move element for Mr. X.

I can see how it might be expanded upon with other versions of this game, but its pure simplicity makes it a great game. The folks I played it with had recent played Letters from Whitechapel and according to them, Scotland Yard held up just fine.

You might like Acquire but it doesn't have the honour of winning the first SDJ evar! (I actually like Aqcuire quite a bit also)

I had previously avoided the game because of the light-theme but a couple months ago I finally decided to throw together my own set using Dixit bunnies and it is really good! Its a race game that screams roll and move...but without the dice. Instead its a thinky resource management game that manages to be light and fun. A very nicely balanced family game and a fitting SDJ winner.

I need to pick up an published copy once I decide what version to get.

Nom-nom-nom! (a shoutout for those who have been on bunspace.net)

The most desirable edition to own, in my opinion, is the one with the original artwork and actually having the squares on the board numbered.

And of course I consider it essential not to play with a rule where eating a lettuce/cabbage is a 1-in-6 possibility for any player who lands on a bunny square.

No, not a "nothing happens" roll, but one using the "Jugging the Hare" rules from before Rio Grande changed them to make the game less challenging:

Roll the die. Add the number on the die to your present position in the race. (If you are in the lead on the racetrack, your number is 1.) Adding these two numbers together, follow the instructions for the total:

2 - Move back to the last vacant hare square (if any).
3 - Miss a turn.
4 - Move back to the last vacant carrot square (if any).
5 - Chew a carrot. (Draw 10 or pay 10, your choice.)
6 - Restore your carrot holding to exactly what you began the race with.
7 - Get a refund of the carrots spent to reach this space.
8 - Lose half your carrots (rounding up).
9 - Have another turn immediately.
10 - Move forward to the next vacant carrot square (if any).
11 - Chew a lettuce. (Treat this hare square as if you had landed on a lettuce. If you have no lettuce to chew, nothing happens.)
12 - Restore your carrot holding to exactly what you began the race with.

So you *can* chew a lettuce, but it's not a chance for *everybody* who lands on the rabbit space -- only for the player who lands on the rabbit space in either 5th or 6th position in the race.

There's another edition with a deck of cards, one to be drawn when you land on the rabbit space, and only one of the cards in the deck enables chewing a lettuce. But my preference is for the die roll rules.

This game was published in 1973, but I'm still a little surprised that I never heard about until a couple weeks ago when a gamer gave away a bunch of his unwanted games. It looked interesting and I snatched this up...we played it last week and I'm really happy I got this game.

Its a total mind bender. Completely abstract board, no luck, simple mechancis, all bluffing. A little old to be a "canonical" euro, but it sure as hell plays like one...well at least one if you wanted a eurogame that was about bluffing.

And it did get a recommendation in the 1991 SDJ.

Not sure if the euro label is accurate here but this game is pretty great. Pure tension.

Just played it again last night...I think its deserves being called a proto-euro. If you used player screens with wooden cubes instead of paper and pencil keeping track of the money, it would really have the components of a euro. But as it is, it feels streamlined and pared down like a euro...not too streamlined to become an abstract, but just a few moving parts that work in concert to create an interesting, thinky game.

The designer is Eric Solomon, the same European who gave us the wonderful kangaroo-racing game Billabong.

Still one of the finest heavy tile games. Super portable... I bring this one along on trips. Scalable for 2, 3 or 4 players. Simply a fantastic game.

How about a reprint?

Surprised not to see this one on the list yet, given it was recently re-released in what is, in essence, the fourth edition (Premiere -- Original Show Manager -- Atlantic Star -- latest Show Manager) which says they can't come up with better games than to reproduce this older one.

Also, many of the games on this list are not 10 yrs. old yet, and a few I would not classify as Euros ...

Labyrinth: The War On Terror is historically inaccurate & politically biased. It's the one popular game that violates BGG's requirements to keep politics out of gen. discussion. And yet it receives special treatment =US-centric views of this site.

I find most set collecting games (looking at you Days of Wonder) to be utterly boring. But this one is somehow different to me. I'll take this over just about any set collecting game published in the last 5 years.

I've owned 5 of these, and played another, and I'm actually surprised to find that I really don't love any of those 6 games. Tikal is probably my favorite on this list, but I never loved it, and we had a lot of AP in our games that slowed it down too much...

San Juan + Cuba > Puerto Rico
(I don't hate Puerto Rico, but I'll almost never opt to pull it out)

The Settlers of Catan was a great game, but I burnt myself out on it for sure...

I've never understood the fascination with Carcassonne. It's okay I guess....nothing special.

And I actively dislike Citadels.

Lastly, I played El Grande once so I can't give a real judgment of it, but I didn't come away loving it...

Add another one not convinced about the euroishness of some of those ... anyway, I have 21 of them (the first 59), and have played 10 in the last year, IIRC.

Edit for clarity

The thing is that the list is about good games, and all good games are Euros by necessity.

And they have explosions. Can't have a good game without explosions.
