Being new to the BBG I have spent a lot of time looking through reviews and trying to determine what route I want to go down with my game purchases. While looking through these reviews and their top 10 lists I noticed one thing...practically nothing. All these reviewers have completely different tastes for their favorite games. Some of their Top 10 don't even match up to their highest rated games. These reviewers greatly sway all of our decisions in what games we may be interested in next and yet none of them have anything in common.

So the geek in me who likes random facts wondered how often do reviewers have the same games in their top 10 and what are they.

So that's what I did. I looked at the top 114 reviewers who have written 40+ reviews for the BGG and made a list of how often the same game is on a reviewers Top 10 list. There were several games that appeared twice, but I did not include them in this list because then there would be almost 200 games. If a game appeared the same amount of times I ranked it alphabetically. This list goes to show that reviewers are opinionated, but obvioulsy their preferences do not line up with each other. You have to find out for yourself what kind of gamer you are and play your games that way.

Hopefully you will all find the information as interesting as I do. If any of you have ideas for other random facts that you're interested in and there's no list for it yet, let me know and maybe I'll find it interesting too and put forth the time to make a list.

This is why movies like Shakespeare in Love win the Oscar for Best Picture over a true piece of art like Saving Private Ryan. Reviewers don't always have the best taste.

(not that I think Dominion is a bad game, but far from top 10 material)

Wait a second here. . while it's easy enough to understand a point about reviewers and so-called taste in games, I take issue with your snarky comment about Shakespeare in Love. Love it or hate it as you see fit, but is (was) as much of a 'true piece of art' as Saving Private Ryan. Shakespeare in Love was a very well-made film. Excellent screenplay, solid acting performances, good direction, costuming. A terrific film that deserved the Academy Award that it won. Not saying it was better than Saving Private Ryan, because there you're moving into that 'personal taste' thing, but as a reflection of the Motion Picture Academy's recognition of excellence in film-making, it was, in fact, an excellent film.

The plot was TV-movie-of-the-week level. If not for a good cast, it WOULD have been a TV-movie-of-the-week.

This is the game that got me back into the hobby. When it first came out I had sold all of my old boardgames (including ASL, Panzer Leader, and my SPI stuff that I don't even remember the names of the games). If this game had not been released, who knows what would have happened.

Now I rarely if ever play it because there are games I am more interested in playing, but I have a lot of love for this game.

I can understand it being in someones top ten, but a reviewers top ten strikes me as odd and perhaps says something about the people who are writing the reviews, but I suppose that is the point that Renee is making.

What it might say is the reviewer is a "gamer" instead of an exclusive "board gamer". While a rarity, I swim in the same stream...avoiding the magic players when I can.

I will be honest, I see the appeal of magic, but I also see the kids in my store (and the adults), dropping $70 plus every month on new cards. I prefer to spend my $70 on boardgames and minis....but board gaming is an expensive hobby too...trust me.

What's the matter here? Small World is a decent little area-control game that offers a ton of replayability, can be taught to non-gamers in ten minutes, and won't make you wish you were doing something besides playing it.

I'll bet you won't find this as #1 on many lists, but somewhere in the top 10? Of about 7% of the reviewers? C'mon.

There must be several definitions of 'replayable'. Sure there are random setups and different maps, and the races get paired with different bonus abilities...

...but that still doesn't stop it from feeling the same every time.

I liked SW a lot when I first played it but after 10 plays - it had run it's course. Fun for a bit.

With one more they can play with the teams rules!

I'm not a top reviewer, but sure this game is in my Top 10. And I did a review about it (is in portuguese - but if you want to try your knowledge, give it a look!).

So let's say 7 1/2 Top 10? Hum?

It may seem strange that the 111th ranked game and the 8th ranked game share the same number of these 114 top ten's, until you consider that there are 228 games within a single point, between 7 and 8.

The only conclusion I can come to is that the odds of my liking the #1 ranked game more than any game in the top 250 are pretty close to a coin-flip.

I had 7 of my Top 10 in the first 25 listed. Only one other in the remaining list. So 8 thumbs from me.

Interesting list.

Good metalist. Seems like a good way to measure broad appeal among the "best" games. I know there are a few top-10 games that I just cannot imagine myself playing.

I'm not sure what this list is supposed to tell us...

The most interesting part about top reviewer's top 10 lists would be to find those 1-3 reviewers with a taste matching your own, because you're more likely to find a game you like if one of these select reviewers (or even all of them) recommended it.

So if you had the top reviewer's top 10 lists in, say, a spreadsheet, you could easily find the eclectic few who like, i.e. Combat Commander: Europe or Napoleon's Triumph if you're interested in wargames, or Go and Chess and Ingenious for abstracts etc.

There were a few missing from my top 10 so perhaps I should become a reviewer and try to skew the results a little.
If you count up the amount of reviewers per game, then I scored 26. I wonder if anyone will score 115 and what does that then say about them?
Nice to see a couple of oldies (Talisman & Acquire) getting in the list, with so many new games coming out, the oldies but goodies tend to get forgotten in most lists these days.
