Welcome to Round 3 of the Derk Cup!

The field has been narrowed to 16 designers. Only eight will move on to the quarterfinals. Congratulations to Richard Garfield - charging through the field with a rank of #61. Can he continue his Cinderella story into the quarters?

Round 3 ends on Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at 12:00 am (BGG time).

The Derk Cup is awarded each year to BGG's favorite designer. In celebration of the minds behind the games, 64 designers (or design teams) face off in a head to head, bracketed, single elimination tournament.

How the Tournament Works:
There is a poll for each pairing. The poll will last for around four days. The designer with the most votes when the poll closes will move on to fight another day. The last designer standing will be the recipient of the prestigious 2012 Derk Cup.

Announcement Thread:
Subscribe here to be alerted when each round begins.

Rules:
No sock puppets (one vote per match-up please).

2012 Derk Cup:
Round 1
Round 2

Champions:
2011 - Reiner Knizia
2010 - Wolfgang Kramer

I know I'm in the minority here, but Alan Moon's designs are so approachable, and playable by anybody, that he has to get my vote over Wallace. Wallace games are great, but you do need a certain kind of group to play them, and me having such irregular groups, his games are usually not really a good option. Moon's always are.

Tough call, I like several of the games from both of these designers with about the same hit ratio. I'm almost tempted to go with Alan as i think he's a little under-rated, but Martin's greater output just wins out.

Knizia has fallen during recent years, but his old designs are still huge innovations that pushed the industry forward, and most are also really fun. Petersen is an ok designer, but not even in the same league as Knizia.

He's had an easy run so far but I can't see him winning again this year.

Agreed. Out of curiosity I checked when the latest game of his that I really like was published. It was way back 2006, Blue Moon City. Beowulf the Movie was more recent, but that was a re-implementation of his earlier design Kingdoms.

While I'm not a huge fan of Knizia, isn't this about the designer and not about new releases?

I didn't see that the criteria was 'what's your favorite designer that has put out a game in the year year?' He has put out a ton of retreads, but he has also done some great designs. It's like comparing two movie actors. One that only does 'quality' movies and one that has done the same (or better) 'quality' movies and a TON of movies that weren't so good and knocking the second because the career includes that extra stuff. They are actors, they get paid to do movies. Tom Hanks is still considered a good actor, but when is the last time he's done anything 'great'?

Should Sid Jackson be excluded (or his designs be considered less) because they are 'new'?

Designers get paid for getting games out. A designer has still designed a game whether it's 1 year old or 10 years old.

For my votes I do factor in their entire body of work. But, if a designer has recently put out something new and great, I'm likely to increase my respect for his body of work. And if a designer seems to noticeably stagnate (at least as far as anything other than light games go), that becomes striking and impossible to ignore. I voted for Knizia in this match-up, but if he faces someone who has more momentum right now as far as great designs go, like Wallace, that would be a much tougher call.

Also I think the annual nature of this poll drives the "what have they done new" attention. Because that's mostly what would drive changes in the poll (new voters, changes in personal taste, or new plays of old games are also an influence but I would argue a lesser influence). Otherwise, just do one all-time poll and forget it, right? Set in stone?

Two "meh" designers for me. I would much rather had voted on their opponents (a Cathala vs. Drover match would have been great). I voted Rosemberg because at least his designs aren't just re-implementations of games that have been in the public domain for years.

This is the comment that made me give my vote to Richard Borg. I wil just start to explain how wrong this is...
- In stratego there is 1 way to win, in Zeus and Hera 3.
- In stratego you always make one move, in Zeus and Hera depending from game state you make 1,2,3 or sometimes 4 actions, moving cards is not one of them normally.
- Everything is on the board at the start in stratego, the board is empty in Zeus and Hera.
- My girlfriend would rather eat her shoes than play stratego, she adores Zeus and Hera (and Memoir),...

Loved Macao and Luna. Castles of Burgundy looks amazing, but so does King of Tokyo.

I've loved Magic the Gathering before, but I'm not sure about it lately. It has become too combo oriented, my "one card of a kind because I like the different pictures and surprises when drawing" decks can't win anymore. The design is great, though, so this was a tough choice!

Garfleld has very little to do with modern MtG design. Of course the current team builds upon the foundation he laid down, but they can take it forwards however they wish, without his approval.

He was a 'guest designer' for Innistrad, but to all intents and purposes, he's no longer part of MtG.

Yeah, his original core design was and still is great, I considered that. That should matter the most since this is about who is the best designer, but still, I guess the direction the game has taken is a natural evolution of it's CCG design. I certainly want to see more of what he can do with non-collectible games.

I'm not a big fan of any of the quoted designs, except one: Princes of Florence is one of the very best games around with 5 players. For this single games my vote goes to Kramer.

You got me, it was a biased statement. However, overall, there is a big difference in the originality of their game premises.

There is no question that Vlaada had really come up with some very innovative designs. Galaxy Trucker, Space Alert and Dungeon Lords are all pretty unique.

That having been said, I think Dominant Species, Urban Sprawl and Combat Commander are all quite creative and original. The reason I asked if you played Chad's other games is that most folks outside the wargaming community don't get a lot of exposure to CC and Fighting Formations. Combat Commander is very original in its approach and makes WWII tactical combat gaming both approachable and fun.

The first non-Euro designer that gets my vote this round. Henn is very good, but Matthews has really revolutionized game design.

I vote Henn based on his designing all of his own games, rather than being a co-designer on the games listed. I do understand Matthews' importance to the hobby, but Henn gets my vote.

Yeah, I didn't quite understand the line of thought. It seems Henn's game list is more diverse then Mathews. I really like Mathews games, but the 4 listed above are all variations on the same central mechanism.

While Henn's games not listed has some diversity. I like Eketorp even though it's just War and for a filler Atlantic Star is fun. I have a copy of Colonia that I haven't play but got because people said I'd like it. And I'd love to be able to try Spekulation, but doubt I'll ever find that. And there's more games.

Mathews has one game and one expansion that isn't listed.

Puerto Rico is a perfect 10 for me, but the other Seyfarth designs are "take them or leave them". The green man, on the other hand, has a couple great games, and a huge bunch of games ranging from ok to very good. My vote goes for the more consistent (and also prolific) designer here.

I agree. This will allow the ones who have been on the shelf a long time to come back out and still compete.

I'm starting to warm to that idea. I sure don't want to wait 16 years though. I'll put a vote at the end of this year's tournament to see if people like the idea of temporary retirement and then a tournament to crown a Grand Champion every 8 years (in addition to that year's Derk Cup).

The game itself isn't important. Spending time intellectually jousting with likeminded folks is the real reason to game.

The fact that Sid Sackson doesn't win this every year is evidence of BGG's overwhelming cult of the new. A rather large pile of the games from these designers are just repurposed mechanics, mostly from the mind of Sackson.

I remember Sackson doing reviews in my old copies of S&T but I am not familair with his work as a designner. What are the games and mechanics your are refering too? Would they still play well today? Would love to pick up a classic like that.
