after playing the main game for quite a few games i decided to add this one in. what i noticed the most while playing was not only is your health under attack but also your coin. there is also a few market cards. some where you get cards from the market even steal a card, hints bandits. then some cards as well that help with multiplayer games, one in general would be "join the band" this one is nice if the other people around you are like me and get knocked out a lot granted 1 coin isn't much, but hey 1 coin is 1 coin.
then the cards that make your allies suffer not many but some.
have not played with any of the early packs i'm not sure how to compare it. i just know that it added to the game in a different way. it was interesting, the good thing is it didn't ruin the game, added in some different challenges (well effected different thing) and i learned if you take chances not only could you get knocked out you could go broke (the worst offender is guild boss)
i would put this one is once in a while but wouldn't keep it in

Runebound - The Cataclysm
Released February 2008

New Adventure Variant

"On the night of the cataclysm, a star fell from the sky, and the land was shattered. Many of the free towns were destroyed; the rest fell prey to terrible curses. Only the most courageous and clever of heroes can free the remaining towns from the beasts, spells, and afflictions that plague them. In this variant game, in addition to normal adventuring, the players must face the obstacles and dangers lying within the cursed towns. If they can overcome them and successfully return from special quests, they may become the towns? saviors, and the free towns will once again be able to rebuild.

The Curse of the Cataclysm adventure variant replaces some elements of the Rise of the Dragon Lords adventure found in the base Runebound game, creating an entirely new game experience!"

This one so far I must say is my favorite. Have only played three adventures, I know that isn’t much, but I did like this one a lot. My wife played this adventure with me. She just so happened to like the main game quite a bit. She on the other hand did not like this adventure much, to be fair she usually does not like expansions. This one she said “takes an already hard game and makes it way harder.”
I think her line is a good one to start this off with. It is hard. Seriously.
Allies and weapons become scares in this adventure. Your ability to move has also been cut down some if you choose to do the market. Basically there are no towns at all so you have to rely on what the rules call refugee camps and traveling caravans. In order to buy items or allies you must split your dice up. One set for travel the other set for the grand question. Did you run in to a refugee or a cavern? Two things that make it hard in this is you can choose to by weapons and allies or choose to heal one or the other but not both. The other part is you have no clue what weapons and allies you will be drawing, so what you draw you might not even want or even be able to afford. If you choose to heal you can only heal as many wounds as dice that match the terrain type you are on.
I did notice a lot of cards did not work with this adventure due to not having a market in a city and some cities being destroyed. Making a lot of the encounter cards useless, which for me is sad because those are the cards I like the most in the game.
One part of the game that really made it for me was the cursed cities. I found it enjoyable once I was healed up again to go to city and take on the curse cards, most all of the yellow cards are challenges, and all of the blue cards are encounters. Some of them have you traveling around the board making number checks at certain places other have you going to a location then to another until you are the first to complete the challenge it gives and then after that fight the source of the towns curse, and some of those can be hard.
This adventure also has a victory point win dealing with the level of the curse cards you have won.
This one I would play with, even bag my wife to allow for this adventure when we play. Not really seeing a solo game in this one. One could play it solo, but some of the blue cards are a race. In fact this whole adventure is a race. One down side is this one can take a long time to play. Well I did it again, I wrote a long comment.

Runebound - The Seven Scions
Released February 2008

New Adventure Variant

"A storm is coming; a storm unlike any the world has ever seen. It consumes all that it touches, and soon everything will be shrouded in its darkness. Your only hope is to awaken the Seven Scions of legend and, with their help, destroy the Stormlords. This variant game introduces new rules and two new types of card: Storm cards, which act as a clock (hastening the story and the game to a close), Events, and special Challenges all in one, and Scion cards, a new type of Ally that any Hero can call on in a moment of need.

The Quest of the Seven Scions adventure variant replaces some elements of the Rise of the Dragon Lords adventure found in the base Runebound game, creating an entirely new game experience!"

From the desc. it sounds like they are carrying over a lot of the successful features introduced in Sands of Al-Kalim...
Good for them. Sands is a much better game than the original.

I had read that you could get them direct from FFG, but I searched their website and couldn't find anything about them... may be worth dropping a line to FFG to ask if they still have them.

New Jungle themed expansion coming in 2010

As the Dragon Wars become a distant memory for the people of Terrinoth, adventurers set their sights on new realms of adventure. Ships set sail across treacherous waters for the first time in centuries to open the doors to the forgotten world of Zanaga. Chaos grips the land. The old empire of lizardmen has fallen, its people have become shadows of their ancestors, descending into savagery. The taint of an ancient evil known as Tarakhe corrupts all and the primal gods must be awoken to restore the balance of nature. Only the reptilian makhim have the rituals to summon the primal powers that can purge Tarakhe’s corruption, but heroes are needed to face the primal gods before they destroy more than just Tarakhe...

Mists of Zanaga adds a colorful new board overlay, depicting the wild jungles and swamps of Zanaga. Six brand new heroes will be able to explore this new continent, uncovering the secrets of the makhim’s rituals, encounter wandering monsters, and hunt for the elusive Lost City. Adding all-new gameplay mechanics, a variety of primal gods to face, and over 165 new cards to bring this lush landscape to life, Mists of Zanaga creates a totally new way to play Runebound. Search out the secrets of the primal gods’ power and help summon them to free Zanaga from the clutch of Tarakhe.

This expansion was a huge dissapointment for my fiance, a few friends and I.

I posted a thread of the brutal chronicle of trying to get this game to work, but it is just so annoying.

http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/551738/mists-of-zanaga-bruta...

I WANT to like it so badly, but the ritual system is just not tested enough, and you end up getting into these ridiculous chains of rituals that are virtually endless in the wrong circumstance.

It seems I have revived the geeklist from the grave, but as with most of my gaming purchases I like to be well informed before committing my wallet to the Runebound shrine of expansions.

I did order it with all the wave 3 expansions and thinking about adding a few of the big ones as well: Sands of Al-Kalim and Mists of Zanaga, mainly. Would also be tempted into acquiring some of the wave 1 and wave 2 expansions if they are worth it.

When I used to own RB, I had the following:
Runebound 2nd Ed (base)
Isle of Dread (big box)
Midnight (big box)
Wave 1 mini expansions

In my opinion, at the time, The Isle of Dread was an excellent expansion and well worth the investment. Of the mini expansions, the 2 adventure Variants were also excellent, however the item expansions in particular did not add a huge amount to the game. The challenge expansions were quite nice, giving some variation in the encounters you had, and adding different themes to the deck, but not essential.

I only played once with Midnight, and it was only 2 player, which kinda didn't work very well, because one player has to be the Midnight player, and the other was the heroes. It changed the game from a free for all like Talisman into more of a semi-co-op like Descent (which may work for some people).

I have all 6 Adventure and Challenge decks and recommend those thoroughly. I have Midnight but am yet to play it although I have the nice Doom Track thingy to play solo with nicely.

I plan on getting all the big box expansions in 2011 starting with the Isle of Dread, even though I have heard some conflicting reports on Dread and Zanaga. Sands is by far the 1 big box that gets the universal applause.

i just ordered this game and am eagerly waiting its arrival. i also ordered the essential collection. about a month ago i started looking for an adventure game i looked at a lot of games and i weighed them out, to be honest i really wanted to get return of the heroes. i gave up on getting that game due to not wanting to spend the money once i found it, also this geek list help change my mind, the only think i feel this game is missing in what i wanted is questing. i realize i am late to this game, but hopefully i will be able to brings some contribution to some of the packs once i get in to the game. i plan on playing this game a lot. thank you for this list and helping me find a game that fits what i was looking for.
