Haven't played this in several years, but it's the one game that really hooked me. It was my first co-op, my first Knizia and the first one I gobbled up expansions with. I can honestly say that it blew open my mind to the possibilities beyond the standard fare of games I grew up with. I shall forever be enslaved indebted to the One Ring Lord of the Rings for years of memories and years more to come.

Nope.

Still my favorite dexterity game and one that charms everyone I present it to.

I'll think of something witty to put here...
mbmbmbmbmb
1844, played in summer 2011.

Very interesting 'advanced 18xx' with a huge banquet of options. Not for the faint of heart. Played once over 3 evenings in summer 2011, taking about 8hrs +1hr of rules.

Features:
The map is large (2-3 times the size of 1830) and has a lot of mountains.
Trains downgrade into 'H trains' that can only travel n hexes (e.g. a 3H train can only go 3 hexes):
3s turn 2s into 2Hs
4s rust 2s and turn 3s into 3Hs etc.
You can opt to buy a H train instead of a regular one, and they are slightly cheaper (this is typically done when you know they are about to be downgraded anyway).

There are:
*6 normal companies,
*3 regional companies split into 40/20/20/20% shares (can only buy H trains)
*5 'Pre-state' companies split into 50/25/25% shares. The first 5T causes the 5 Pre states to merge into the Swiss state railway which inherits all the cash, trains and tokens of the Pre States. Pre state 50/25% shares are converted into 10/5% shares. Share values are adjusted to $100, so if you are over/undervalued you get compensated or must make up the difference (that is only a small amount of money). It also comes with a free 5H train and some money.

There are revenue bonuses for doing north-south or east-west runs.

Another feature of the game is that companies only get half their capital when floated, the other half is released when they reach their 'historical destination' (except for Regional companies), a few hexes away, but it can be expensive to get there.

Furthermore, there are mountain companies which are like private companies and exist as a single hex that acts like the red off board locations but in the middle of the board. They pay $40/turn to the owner, and boost revenues by $10-80, depending on the phase. Also we have tunnel companies, which are similar to mountain companies but only pay $10 to the owner, and boost revenues by $10/city for a train that runs through the tunnel.

Got this game for Christmas and finally convinced my gaming group to give this a try last night. It quickly shot into my top 5 favorite games.

While the rules are relatively simple, the game is amazing when it comes to all the hard choices you need to make. This is a game that rewards long term strategic planning such as choosing what R&D to pursue, which companies to acquire, and when to merge. Even something as simple as merging can be played from a variety of angles. You may want to merge to form a monopoly, free up a slot to acquire more company deeds, raise cash for victory points or future mergers, extend the length of your shipping train, increase or decrease the transport of goods over ships, get access to additional coastal areas, etc. There are also many tactical decisions like how much do you want to spend to be first in turn order, which company to produce or ship with first, etc. The mechanics work very well together. There also appear to be many ways to victory. You can focus on shipping, producing or both. Some people specialized in shipping capacity, others in mergers, others in the amount of deeds they could own. Each of them offer pluses and minuses.

Although it took us 4-1/2 hours to set up, explain the rules, and play it, everyone loved it and so we are going to play it again on President's Day.

This was my second Splotter Spellen game. I tried Antiquity a few months back. While a solid civilization game, I found Indonesia to be much more enjoyable.

I'm surprised no one else chose this. I like that it is an elegant version of Vinci with excellent components & fun artwork. It is a simple wargame with a fantasy theme, scales well for 2-5, offers lots of combinations of race/power, especially if you get the expansions (we always get expansions).

I am looking forward to trying it combined with Small World Underground.

In the 'blew my mind' category, this is the most recent. It's not only the size, it's the so very well thought out system. It has almost a minimalist rules set (minimalist in terms of what the game is trying to simulate), which allows for sophisticated and complex play. Unfortunately I wasn't able to bring the game with me (I'm overseas now), and am waiting for a VASSAL module to be produced.

Awesome miniatures and an awesome game!
At it´s core it´s ultra simple, you decide either to shift (move) or strike (attack) with all your units, but where and how you are doing it is the key.
Add to that the incredible variety of the many different miniature abilities and you got an asymetric dream game, that has the clean benefits of an abstract with the tension and atmosphere of a thematic game.

Without a doubt I'd have to give this to Space Alert.

I bought the game last August based purely upon reading about it here on BGG and then reading the rulebook online. I had to wait all the way until Thanksgiving to finally have the chance to play it. On the last night of my break, my brother, myself, and three friends finally pulled it out and began working our way through the handbook to become "space explorers"

Let's just say I didn't get very much sleep before my 11 hour drive the next day. Mind blown! This game is incredible and like nothing I'd ever experienced before

What an amazing game! I read through the eight pages of rules and thought "is this all there is to it"? The first game was interesting. I wondered if the game play would get stale with just a couple of strategies.

But after a half dozen plays every game has played out completely differently. There is some "magic" to this game that I can't quite figure out. Maybe having the Mediterranean Sea in the middle of the board is the secret. Movement tends to be fast using ships across the sea but slow over land around the periphery. Positions can appear static but then change dramatically in a few surprising moves.

There is a sub game all to itself about controlling the sea zones. Then I discovered you can use navies with their attached marines to aid your land battles and my mind was blown. Suddenly the sea zone sub-game became intertwined with the land battles. Add to this the card play which add just the right amount of chaos to make a turn never certain, hidden but varied units to allow bluff, and you have a classic game that will always have a cherished place in my collection.

Oh, and you get this great experience in 2-3 hours. What more could you want in a war game?

I could also choose Container due to its austere elegance or Scotland Yard with its excellent coop deduction excitment but I will choose truly the last game that surprised me instead of the ones that blew my mind in December and January.

This game is a very odd bird. Old but an a total mind bender. Its very simple. It has an perfectly symmetrical abstract board and 8 pieces. The goal is to use on of the pieces to pick up a briefcase and bring it to your home base. You can move any of the pieces but your ability to do so is affected by how much money you secretly you allocate to each of them during the game.

I am awful at guessing the intentions and hidden actions of other players - in all games. And this game is ALL about guessing your opponents intentions and bluffs. I would not be surprised if I never win a game of this in my life, but it is great, great brainburning fun..

For a outguess/outbluff/outmaneuver your opponents type of game it is both elegant and absolutely brilliant.

Evolutionary game design.

Loved it's ancestor games, but each of them lacked something.

It lacks a bit of polish but brief, simple yet deep interactive games are very, very rare.

I was very eager for my copy of this to arrive in the mail, but when it finally came the crappy rules booklet, slightly disappointing quality of the components and then reading some very mixed opinions on the game here on the geek made me skeptical. A botched first session did not help one bit.

Luckily I tried it again. And this time it turned out awesome! Intense, fun and tactical. Everyone loved it and wanted to play it again right away. And then that next session turned out even MORE intense with an epic ending that still makes me smile. Quite possibly the most enjoyable board game session I've had to date.

So in the end, this game turned out to be everything I hoped it would be. I feel I can't rate it a 10 since it does have some glaringly obvious weaknesses, but I still consider this one one of my absolute favourites.

The complete East front from 1941 to 1945, playable in a few hours! Relatively simple rules (though there's still some "finetuning" of the rules), beautiful map, low counter density and overall great gamecomponents. This is the best "little" wargame I own. And more: the gamedesigner, Carl Paradis, offers the best gamesupport I've ever noticed.

This is a wargame where you have to kind of forget everything you know about wargames before you read the rules, because it will mess you up. The strategy is very deep in this one. I'm in the middle of my sixth play, approximately, and am still learning things about the game.

On the GL's where people ask "what would be your top x number of games to have on a desert island?", this is one of them.
