I played this game at New Year's Eve. Next week I bought it.
Great theme, great mechanism, I simply love it.

I'm sure someone else has posted this.

But playing high frontier has literally changed the way I see the night sky.

This one really blew my mind when I played it. I'm not really sure if I like it yet, but all the interactions and chaining and this and that really blew my mind. I couldn't comprehend half of the interactions in my first few games. It also seemed to go so fast and me an my opponent were just overrunning each other. I will give this more chances cause it seems awesome but there just seems to be so much to it for a card game. Don't even get me started on the effects triggering if the moon before was the same color. I hope within the next few games I can get my head around this. I don't really rate it a 9 or 10 but I see it being there after I figure it all out.

When my husband brought it home, I figured it would just be another Dominion clone. Upon first play, I was amazed at how different it was. Every card purchased made a huge difference in the course of play. Plus the theme really comes through. Very fun!

Received this for my birthday over the past weekend.

Have played it four times since then.

I love so much about this game:

- hand management (you want cards, but not too many)
- resource management ( money=good! poverty=bad! )
- constant engine building and rebuilding (build your city, run it, build more! )
- subtle/simple tactical area claiming/control

I love games where you get to build an engine - and in this one you get to build 2, 3, or 4 of them. Awesome.

My first game of this was my first real expereince with "big boy" games. It is a game that's only elements of chance are starting position and what settlements come out. Thinking turns ahead, cornering people into making moves, trying new strategies....doesn't get old. This game still blows my mind and it has been close to 3 years since I first played it.

I haven't had my mind blown since playing my first card-driven game We The People and before that, Up Front. But this is the 'latest' game that blew my mind. Just so eloquent and EXTREMELY balanced. I can't get enough and it's never over till it's over no matter what. Every decision is nail-biting and very important. The written scenarios are finely balanced so that you never have quite enough resources to do everything you want to do, which keeps the game tense till the end. The chaos element via random Events is simply amazing. The mind-blowing part is how well the game holds together despite all of these varying mechanics happening. Perhaps the cream of the game is first and foremost The Random Scenario Generator which works to give you the same sort of experience without playing the written scenarios. This means virtually endless replay value for your money. And it does give a decent 'simulation' of combat in various ways. My vote is definitely for this game.

I have to say BSG.

The first time I played it, I was very, very underwhelmed. We played the "short" variant, the humans never really had a chance from the outset, and it just felt like an exercise in frustration with little purpose.

Since then I've played it 5 times and it just gets better with experience. I've discovered that, while not *essential* for human players, a solid knowledge of the mechanics (particularly skill checks) makes the game far, far more interesting. Also, it's very hard to play as a cylon without really knowing the rules.

Luckily, there is a critical mass of BSG hardcore skinjobs in my region to make this a fairly regular occurence.

In our last game, I was President Tom Zarek as a human. My GF was in the game as well.

She now has a new name. Kerry Frackentoaster.

Other games that have blown me away (just not as recently. . . ) Dominant Species, Powergrid, Game of Thrones.

This game is QUALITY! Great looking, simple mechanics that are understood in moments, and just tons of strategy and tactics abound throughout the entire experience. A Eurogame where you play against the other players, where interaction is guaranteed. It also scales PERFECTLY from 3-5 players; can't say that about many others.

Play it, love it, you'll thank me (but good luck finding a copy. Why this hasn't had larger publisher interest is beyond me).

Truly BLEW MY MIND!

The game itself didn't blow my mind but the intricacies, depth, and genius design certainly did. Like Puerto Rico, it is one of the few games that makes me think about it well after the game is over. I've only had 2 plays with it but it will probably take me 10 just to get a grasp on a strategy.

This game was purchased looking for a co-op game that had to be free of fantasy/sci-fi influence that also minimised one player running the game.

*This game succesfully presents a frantic tactical game play.
* Advanced game from scrath took ten minutes to teach
*It's a theme home run
*It's co-op and at the same time the random fire and points of interest mechanic stop players being able to plan to far ahead and therefor prevents table being run by one players strategy.
* After one game it was requested to be played twicwe more immediately after.
* Manages to be both gamer and family friendly with scalable difficulty. Working on simplfying the rules so that I can teach a four year old to play and I don't think it's a stretch.

I had already gotten used to the fact that board games have to cut a lot of simulation corners in order to reduce the real-world down to a game that can be played in a few hours with paper, chits, and cards - until I played Whistling Death.

I was surprised that a board game could capture the feel of WWII air combat so well (I play WWII flight sim video games, so that is my reference point). Truly a mind-blower.

Though if you're just getting started, I recommend the easier Buffalo Wings to start with.

This is the last game I rated a 9 or 10. I've only played the introductory scenario, but I already think it's a great game (and one that's currently available on Tanga at a deep discount). I'm looking forward to playing the more advanced scenarios. My wife doesn't care for this genre, so that makes it hard to get this to the table as often as I would like.

showed up with his latest haul. I love Gil, 'cause he is the High Priest of the Cult of the New and always has the latest and greatest games on hand. That day he introduced us to Belfort, Sun, Sea & Sand, and then brought out the big gun.

I had been interested in trying Prêt-à-Porter ever since I saw a copy among the evilone's haul from Essen. Gil was willing to teach. A limited action, math heavy Euro, economic similution where you slowly develop unique powers! And you are not building cathedrals or pyramids! Oh. My. God. Everything just clicked. In a way it was like a cross between Automobile and Egizia, two of my favorite games. It ticked all the right boxes, made all the right noises, and called me "honey". It did not matter that I destroyed the other players by finding a combo that worked, I would have loved this if I had been trounced. My GF's comment was that her collections were more like Port-o-Potty than Pret-a-Porter, but we could not stop talking about this game all the way home (and it was a 3 hour drive).

If you like hard-edged economic games, try this; give it a chance, even if are scared of the theme, and you are unlikely to come away disappointed.

I am glad I ordered it and that it will soon have a good home at our house (once freaking The Settlers of the Stone Age arrives and everything ships).

High Frontier + Birds of Prey = AV:T

This IS ACTUALLY rocket science

Possibly the only space combat game that does more than just nod at the actual Physics (excepting the other fine games in the Ad Astra stable which include inertialess drives [SITS] and cinematic movement [Squadron Strike] although the rather awesome Mr Burnside is very clear about when and why the Physics is wrong, when it's wrong). If you want to know what actual space combat would be like and the actual tactical and strategic issues it would involve then this is the holy grail.

Don't get me wrong - I love cinematic space combat games (I just backed Gunship: First Strike because it looks such fun), but when I'm in the mood for hard Physics there are just not enough letters in nine-sigma-simulationist to describe this beauty!
