After years of being interested in this classic, but hesitating due to the hurdle of distinguishing the Kanji-labeled pieces, I finally started playing it in December with a set I impulsively bought in Essen a few weeks earlier.

I found it to be awesome, not only living up to its reputation as a classic but exceeding my expectations.

(And it didn't take as long as I worried to learn the symbols...)

The drop rule (being able to drop a captured enemy piece back into play as your own piece onto an empty space) gives it a very different feel from western chess. I'm very glad I finally tried Shogi!

I own some games designed by Feld and I really enjoy DBVB. I'm planning my next purchase but until now I'm not yet decided among:
- Luna (great cause u can play solo)
- Macao (I like the rondel)
- In the Year of Dragon (I like the mechanics and the fact u have to face the events)

The first boardgame which blew me away way back in about 1988 (I have the 4-player German version so can't comment on the later edition). The complex scoring at the end means you're never really sure who's winning. Resources are scarce so every decision feels like a tough call. Every mechanic in this game fits together like a Swiss watch.

Theme gets me more than actual mechanics every time...

When I first got this (the original, orange box version), we played it EVERY night for two weeks, and at least two games of it each time.

I still think it is one of the best games I have had the pleasure of owning, teaching to others, and it will always be one of my favorites.

And I still haven't peeked/played at all the haunts, even though I have owned it since it first came out.

I haven't played in a while, I burned out on it to be honest, but that doesn't change my opinion of the game. It's absolutely beautiful. The mind blowing part for me, though, was the way the game play of stacking tiles mimics the formation of volcanic islands. So Cool.

Played this for the first time a few weeks ago and immediately loved it. I love the interactions and possibilities in this game, and the cyclic nature of it distinguishes it from other pick-up-and-deliver games. A great logistics game in a surprisingly small package (ignore the "3 hour" play time - it's more like 60-90 minutes).

This one blew my mind when I played it for the first time in 2010. It converted me to a viewer of the whole series and of course I wanted to play it again and again. I didn't own the game though. Luckily I was able to play it with others later that year three times in 2 days, ending with an awesome 7-player-session.
Of course it is all mine now, and I converted several other guys to fans of the game.

I was wandering aimlessly around Origins 2011, and found a guy putting this out to play in the Board Room.

Quoting my comment on the game:

Quote:
I looked at the shabby components (are those toothpicks stuck into tinkertoys?) and didn't expect much, but this turned out to be a real highlight of Origins 2011 for me! The rules fit the theme well.

Indeed, looking back I would say this is the game I enjoyed the most at last year's Origins (but don't read too much into that, I had a screwy schedule and perpetual bad timing, so I missed out on a lot of stuff), and I would love a chance to play again.

Alas, I haven't seen it since, but if I do I'm going to grab it!

I guess I will not make you mad by posting A game you do not like and post the other game that I upgraded to 9.5 in december 2011. This is the sort of game that makes me always think I will play some daring new tactic next time. The different minigames in this game give it a mariopartyfeeling, but much better and without the irritating cutscenes (and with Romanswhistle ). Try it and throw curses at the rondel.

This is why it pays to not be a board game snob. My in-laws wanted to play this with me, and I was really skeptical. A game from Mattel that says age 5 and up? Really?

But I was wrong. This game is good. Really good. It's the most recent time I gave a game a 9, and it was one I was expecting not to like.

(I should've learned my lesson about judging mass market looking games from Turn the Tide, but I didn't. Even though I still love Stratego, I tend to assume I won't like things from the major publishers.)

Played this for the first time weekend. I was having one of those games where it did not click until it was almost over. With about 15 minutes left it did and I was really loving it. I had to play it again and did so on Monday. It is an awesome game! There is so much going on and it all works together beautifully.
Both times with the expansion: Sid Meier's Civilization: The Board Game – Fame and Fortune.

Runner up: 1830: Railways & Robber Barons (old version). Tried it for the first time last week. A wonderful and wild game if played with the right people (which it was). I think it could be bad with the wrong group - just remember to choose people who you would want to spend 4-6 hours with and who won't hold a grudge if you destroy them in the game.

Honorable mentions: Core Worlds and Biblios were both new to me over the last month and are wonderful games that will have permanent spots in my collection. They don't "blow my mind" because they are not heavy or involving enough to do so, but will probably get more plays for those very same reasons.

Got this one as a Christmas present from my wife this past year, having never played it before. Disregarding the warnings about the "expert variant" we sat down to play it together and I ended up being severely disappointed by the clunkiness of the dummy player mechanic. A few weeks later, I decided to bring it out during a get together with 4 friends, and was blown away by how elegant the game was with 5 people. Simple to each (aside from the occasionally confusing symbols), quick to play, yet held an amazing depth of strategy to it, with many paths to victory. Never thought I'd find a game that's so easy, yet so deep and varied, and still works with more than 4 players.

I bought this game after watching the Dice Tower review because I thought it looked fun and had some interesting mechanics that I had not seen before (splaying, tucking...etc). I was confused after my first play, but now I am hooked. After 30+ plays, I can honestly say that this game keeps getting better and better. This game "blows my mind" because I still cannot believe that so much variety comes from such a small amount of cards. After all of the games we have played, we have never seen the same game twice. I love it and cannot get enough!

Have been a big Kingsburg fan, which kept me from picking this game up for quite awhile as I'd heard they were very similar games.

Received AF in a recent math trade and got to play it this weekend for the first time. I agree it is similar to Kingsburg, but not so much that a fan of one wouldn't want to own the other as well. My only disappointment is that I did not pick it up earlier. Cannot wait to play this one again.

Ahhhhh.... American Rails.

So I love Chicago Express and was on the fence with this little number when it was re-printed recently. I knew this didn't have the fance box and bits (similar to Winsome games), but b/c it had earned the recommendation from other players, I bit the bullet and I'm VERY glad I did.

Pros:
* Near perfect balance (Very powerful moves force you into a very weak position in the next round and vice versa).
* Fast to teach
* EASY to teach

To say I like this better than C/E.... I can't! I like them both for different reasons. Similar? Yes. Replaceable? Not for me anyway. Great game that blew me away.
