2012-02-11 - My wife went out for a ladies day with her friends, so I had a few friends over for a day of gaming! Jeremiah_Lee and Fograsher made the trip down from MI, Raid1280 made the journey down as well, a good time was had by all!
Winner's Circle
Horse Fever
Liar's Dice
K2
Hunting Party
The Resistance
Double Agent

2012-02-12 - I had to work a few hours, plus resting from Saturday. I did get one game in with my older daughter. Probably my favorite game of the weekend, since she asked to play it, and also beat me fairly.

Not much gaming done this weekend, but did catch up on a bunch of season 2 episodes of Big Bang Theory

Played a game of Eruption with my mom and wife yesterday. My wife hit the breaking point, I was one space away, and my mom won being two spaces away from me.

Then my brother joined and we played a game of Citadels. My mom won again, although my wife could have won it at the end if she had a 2-coin district of something other than one she already played earlier.

And then my brother opted out again and we played a 3 player game of Gold Mine that I ended up winning.

Should be much more gaming next weekend with the monthly all day meetup!

Friday night I played Africana, Michael Schacht's "book of adventures" Valdora follow-up the second time; this time 2-player, with my wife. It went fine but she won. (see my review here.)

On Sunday I played two board games with my 3-year-old son: Kunterbunte Autorelli, a very simple roll-colors-and-move game and Orchard. And that was it...

I've read buzz around the geek about Galaxy Trucker and was looking forward to playing it. The game wasn't what I expected - a type of speed/puzzle game, but flying your half-baked ship around the galaxy getting parts blown off was certainly a unique theme....

Saturday, finally, finally played Taluva with my husband. Ordered a used copy of this OOP game from Germany last year, only to have it not hit the table for a long time. Now that we've tried it, my husband and I both really liked it and can see this one getting some decent play in the future.

3p game of Alien Frontiers. I forgot how good this game can be with the right people.

3p game of Stone Age. Nearly choked a player who kept asking the first-time player, "OK. Do you *really* want to make that move?" Yes. She made that move. Condescension in the name of teaching is STILL condescension.

3p game of Nefarious. SO good.

7p game of 7 Wonders + Leaders. My one win for the evening. Woo hoo!

Winter temps finally arrived this weekend, not that it had anything to do with game play. So, enough on the weather, here is what we played:

Friday
1x - Agricola
1x - Saint Petersburg

My girls were having some friends over for a Valentines Day party so I had the night free. Most of my gaming friends, however, had other commitments. Fortunately one of the guys and his wife were available. They were excited to play a 3p game of Agricola, like me, most of the games are 2p. It was slow going, but my friend ended up winning 36 to 27 and 27.

By the time we finished the V-day party was over and my wife joined us for our first non-2p game of Saint Petersburg. It plays very differently with 4p than 2, you get fewere decisions by far, and each one seemed to be more difficult. Not an elegant looking game, but is plays well. It was a battle down to the final action of buying VP with our remaining money. My wife ended up winning 101 to 97, 96, and 96. Our friends had never played it before, and really liked it. In fact, as soon as we were done they bought it.

Sunday
1x - Bohnanza

After a long day, three of us sat down for a game of Bohnanza before going to bed. Once again, I was unsuccessful to convince my wife and youner daughter to play with Bohnaparte so we simply traded and planted beans while trying to stay awake. Our daughter won, 27 to 25 and 25. Lots of tie scores for the bottom scorers this weekend... and I was one of them in all three games.

meeple Keep playing...

When I first heard about "Race for the Galaxy", I imagined a rocket-fueled space-ship racing game. A board resembling the one from Galaxy Trucker came to mind. I guess I was a bit disappointed when I found out it was a card-based game of space conquest.

That was a long time ago. Now RftG has become a staple in our collection and a game that regularly gets pulled up when we have an hour or so to kill. So when we spent a few hours guarding a school against vandalism last week (there's this belgian holiday where kids try to make a mess of their school during the night), we played a few rounds of Race for the Galaxy. Playing a card-game during "guard duty" felt very much like the appropriate thing to do. And the game was fun as always. I'm still waiting for that next expansion!

7 Wonders with 7 Wonders: Leaders - Our first time playing with leaders. They definitely add some extra fun to the game. I intended to go green, but my right hand neighbour was as well and we competed each other out of the race.

Galaxy Trucker - We introduced some friends to galaxy trucker. They liked the building part but didn’t care much for the adventuring cards. I regressed back to my starting skill level and built a ship with such a bad connection that half of it detached as I left the space port.

Dungeon Petz - My second or third time playing Petz, and with the advanced need cards. We still very much play with “Oh, no wait, it’s better if I do it like that” on in order to survive the Vlaada needs puzze, I wonder when that will change. A nice game with lots of out loud puzzle solving, guessing at other player’s plans and a lot of cursing.

Carcassonne - Short enough not to get bored!

My mom was visiting us from out of town this weekend. She is always up for some lighter games and brough a new one for my daughter, but is not very interested in heavier fare, so that influenced what we played--though not necessarily for the worse!

First up was a party game that had been sitting around unplayed, Such a Thing?. It was quite fun. Not laugh-out-loud fun like my favorite party games, but really pleasant and sort of interesting. The game forces you to be creative in a sort of constrained way. You have a hand of cards with short descriptive phrases or words on them (for example, "can be eaten," "I could have it in front of us within five minutes). You try to play your cards so that all you can name something that is described by all of the cards that anyone has played. Obviously this gets harder as more cards are played until somebody challenges a player to actually name the thing that is described by all the cards. Inevitably, there are close calls and arguments about whether something fits, and this is part of the fun.

Then we gave Creatures: The Card Game a try. I kickstarted this one, but hadn't had a chance to play it yet. It was pretty good! It's not terribly strategic, and luck plays a strong role (but not overwhelming) but there are some interesting decisions. The theme and artwork make it generally fun. It's pretty quick, so it didn't outlast its welcome. This is one I'll keep around.

On Sunday, we played Animal Upon Animal, which my mom brought for my daughter. It's a fun, kid's building game, that I am sure will also get a decent amount of play after my daughter is in bed. It's light fun.

Finally got our first game of Risk: Legacy in. It took almost 3 hours! It looked like it would be over in under an hour, but there were several miraculous comebacks and rushes where someone would take a HQ with their last troop before the other player got their fourth VP. It was epic. It all came down to one final roll for a HQ in Eastern Australia: 1-on-1 (last troop available for attack) with a roll of 2 beating 1, with the next player (me) ready to cash in 4 cards for a VP for the win. So tense!

Finally got this Wallace area influence wargame to the table. It has tough decisions for your limited actions plus the ability to make strategic choices about where to focus your efforts. The die roll difference combat modifier gives a nicely controlled element of uncertainty.

It also includes auctions to establish alliances at the beginning of each of the 3 "wars" (turns) and a large selection of ability tiles to choose from. It us about 4 1/2 hours with six mostly new players, so it a good mid-length game for us.

The only gaming I got in this weekend. Played 3 rounds of 3-player. I won 2 of the 3 rounds and lost the 3rd by just 1 point. One of the players is notorious for going big money by default and only trying other cards if they have basic effects. She was blown out in all 3 games. We convinced her to try trashing coppers and estates, and she didn't really like it. She got the message, though.

Her: "How are you guys getting 11+ treasure all the time?"
Me: "Because we don't have coppers and estates in our decks."

The last weekend was a good gaming weekend for me.
It starts on friday with a 3 player round of Quarriors!. It was fun like every time when the little dice monsters have the chance to come out of their box.

Then we played two round of 7 Wonders. I played it the first time with more then two people and it was great. The two player rules are a bit strange and IMO not really good but with 3 players the game works very well.

Last one on friday was Ramses Pyramid. I think it isn't a "good game" but a "okay" little filler and it is from lego: For the lego fan in our group that fact was a biiiiig plus!

On saturday my wife and I played Dungeon Petz for the first time (I bought it just a few hours before at our FLGS). This game has an unbelievable great artwork. The monsters are so cute and just to read the rules was very entertaining. The game is a solid and very tactical worker placement/bidding game and normally such games are not my cup of tea. But because of the great theme, its particular charm, the integration of a luck factor (cards) and (last but not least) the really "smooth gameplay" it was a lot of fun! My wife also likes it and so I think during the next weeks we will play "Dongeon Petz" relatively often.

On sunday morning I had time for a solo round of Elder Sign. After just 3 midnights I had collected the required 11 elder signs and the ancient one had only 3 doom tokens on its doom track. So it wasn't a very challenging or thrilling experience but a nice "sunday morning wake up game during the first cup of coffee". The rest of the day we played Final Fantasy XIII-2. Video games are unbelievable time killers and so we sadly weren't able to play another board game

I had already tried out a few turns of the scenario with my wife and then again solo to get the hang of it, so we didn't have to spend the entire time with our noses in the rulebook. Immediately after the game, Jay requested another round (!!). I don't remember that happening with any game that takes longer than Dominion before.

We didn't have enough time to read the rules that we needed to move past the introductory scenario, and in fact not quite enough time to really finish the intro scenario again, so we made up our own variant on the intro scenario with a 2-hour time limit. Once time was up, we were about 2/3 of the way through the game proper. Not too bad!

Mage Knight seems pretty great. I'm going to run through the intro scenario with my wife again, and then I will never want to play another game ever again.

Ok, maybe that's not entirely true. Brooke and I had a lot of fun playing:

--Sunday--

We set up a game of Caylus some nights ago (our first try after I traded for the game a year ago), and we've been playing a couple turns here and there when we could get a good nap out of the baby. We finished our game up last night. I was a little wary to give it a try after playing Agricola, because I was pretty underwhelmed by Farmerland.

Not that Caylus and Agricola have much in common apart from the worker placement business, but I tend to be skeptical of new (to me) Euros. I adore the ones that I like playing, but I often find that new ones don't thrill me enough to supplant the ones I know and love. Caylus passed the test, though. It has just the right amount of nasty and the perfect amount of thinky. Love it! When we finished, Brooke immediately gave it a "thumbs up" without even being prompted. That's a little unusual. She must have really liked it.

I'd like to try Caylus with more players, but I think 2 or 3 will be my sweet spot. Anything more than that might be too chaotic for me (though I'd love for the game to prove me wrong).

Now I need to finally get through the rules for Tigris & Euphrates.

Games, games and more games!

This weekend we had my husband's schoolfriend over, who is into the long themey games, whereas I'm more of a eurogamer, and so I spent the weekend playing games that are very different from my usual fare.

Saturday:

Three of us were up early, so we started with an Eminent Domain. Then my son wanted a game, so we pulled out King of Tokyo to play with him, and then I took the kids swimming while the others played a game without me. After lunch there were four of us to kill 10-15 mins, while my husband's friend made a quick phone call, so we played some silly time-killers - Tension (twice), followed by Sorry! Sliders. That put us all in a light party game mood, so I suggested my Christmas present, Identik, and then I took the kids out toboganning for a bit, making the most of the last day we would have enough snow to do so. Then my son wanted a game, so some of the others played Heroica: Fortaan with him. After that we played Star Trek: Expeditions, which the friend had brought, and he commented on how much easier it was with 4 players! Then my son wanted another game, and chose Dominion this time, so a few of us played with him, while the others made dinner.

After dinner we had time for a longer game, so pulled out Mansions of Madness - I can see why it's so highly rated, as although it wasn't my type of game it was quite enjoyable, although a bit on the long side, taking about 3 hours. It had a very amusing end too - as we got to the big hard monster at the end, and then my husband realised his special power was "Kill a monster", which was a bit of an anti-climax, after all the build-up before it, but quite hilarious too, seeing Colin's face as he realised his big hard monster could die that easily! We finished the evening with which what was nearly a never-ending game of Lords of Scotland, and then headed to bed.

Sunday:

My son had been asking for a game of HeroQuest the day before, but we'd never had a suitable gap for it, so it wasn't really a surprise that we started the day with a game of that, followed by his kids version of it - Heroica: Fortaan (although I didn't play the second myself, instead getting the roast on for lunch). Then there were just 3 of us to play some fillers while waiting for the others to finish breakfast, so we played Take Two. Then we played Thunderstone: Dragonspire - I'm a big fan of deckbuilders and this is no exception, but I do find this one slightly more frustrating than some of them.

After that we had a long lunch, then spent the afternoon on one long game of Battlestar Galactica. One of the new players was dealt a Cylon card early on, but wasn't doing much Cylon activity early on - in fact everyone assumed power-hungry Colin was the Cylon, as he was the President and Admiral, and doing some very odd stuff as power went to his head. I was Boomer, and sure enough one of my two cards was a Cylon one, and with another supposed Cylon sitting to my left, was able to be quite obviously a Cylon without too much fear of reprisal. In fact, I got to the situation where I could set him up to lose the game on the penultimate jump - but when he chose not to take that option I realised he was actually a human - and quickly found myself in the brig. At that point the other Cylon started to do some more obviously Cylon stuff, and just as I revealed myself she got brigged herself, and revealed herself too. They eventually got near enough to do the final jump early, but with only 1 population it was quite risky. After a long discussion the humans decided that it was less risky than continuing for the extra rounds, and they were lucky and won.

Our guests were going to leave before dinner, but after that game it was dark, so decided to stay an extra night, so we played another game in the evening - Fortune and Glory: The Cliffhanger Game. We started at about 8.30pm, and if it had taken the published 90 minutes playtime I think I would have really enjoyed it, but when 3 hours in we still hadn't finished it did start to annoy - two players were only 1 or 2 fortune short, and my husband had an artifact that would get him enough fortune to win, but couldn't seem to draw any decent city cards so kept getting prevented from winning. Eventually it was so late that we had to abandon the game and call it a draw between the two leading players. Some fun ideas, and a great theme though.
