I love games! I always have. I play them with my family. I play them with my friends. I play them with kids. I play them with old folks. I play abstracts. I play Euros. I play Ameritrash. I play party games. I play word games. I play card games. I play old games. I play new games. I played games when I was a pre-schooler. I played them as a teen. I played them as a husband. I played them as father. Now I play them as my hair turns grey. I play games in the morning. I play them in the afternoon. I play games at night. In fact, I just might be addicted. But why do I like games so much? I have often asked myself that question but never really delved into the answer. Well, today it is time to dig deep. Here is why I play games….

Feel free to share your own reasons.

Adventure
I love adventure. I am an adventurous sort as my wife and four daughters will readily attest. When I play a game, I enter into an adventure. Well, maybe not every game, but many of them. Where else can I dig up archaeological artifacts? Where else can I attack a pirate ship? Or steal treasure? Where else can I shoot an outlaw, get shot, drink a beer and get better? Where else can I ride logs down a rapid ridden river, race Formula cars at Monaco, rush out of a sinking city collecting valuable treasure as I go? Where else can I build pyramids and factory machines, fly airplanes over England and Germany, ride trains across North America, grow fruit in Mallorca or conquer a Caesar? Games are ripe with adventure and I love it!

Thrill
Ok, so I like adventure. Why? Because I love the thrill. And games are full of thrills. The thrill of the chase. The thrill of the hunt. The thrill of being the first to make a discovery, of having the most gold, of racing my car dangerously around the hairpin corner. I love the thrill of seeing my robot careen successfully around the board. I love the thrill of shaking 3 fives and 2 sixes in a single throw. I love the thrill of taking over a much sought after province in Spain. I love the thrill of tiptoeing undetected past Mother Superior with a bottle of gin in my hand. Am I easily thrilled? Maybe. But games give me the thrill as much as any movie ever has. Often times even more. I have played games standing up due simply to the edge-of-your-seat thrill.

Challenge
I enjoy challenges. I enjoy challenges at work and at home. I enjoy them in a puzzle. I especially enjoy challenges in a game. How can I successfully outmaneuver my opponent? How can I get from here to there in less moves? How can I hold down two jobs, add on to my house, plow fields, raise sheep AND get my wife pregnant? Quick? How can I get more points for my blue stars while still beating my opponent to that spot with the green dots? How could Mr. X have landed up there and how will I get him now?

Control
Well, this sounds bad, but I suppose control is truly one of the things that causes me to like games. I can control my own board. I can control my own house. I can control my own region. I can control my own economy. I can control my own COUNTRY! …… well, at least I can try!

Friendship
I love the camaraderie around the table. The table talk. The trading, the happy bickering, the friendly threats. I love the teams efforts to take out the monsters, or get the treasure off the island. I love sharing my adventure with others, and beating the pants off of them in the process. Or not. Games draw people together. They allow them to be happy in each other's company.

Togetherness
This entry is here because of the one above it. Games are amazing! They bridge huge gaps. They bring together people that would never be seen in the same room, and these people can actually enjoy each other's company. Games tear down walls; social walls, racial walls, generational walls. Games pave the way to deeper relationships.

Fun
After all is said and done, games are all about FUN. I can't tell you how many times I have been in a bad mood or a little depressed, and as soon as I get going on a game I lighten up and start joking, and even get a little giddy. In fact, those that know me might say I get a LOT giddy when I play games. Especially if it gets late. But late or not, giddy or not, games are just plain fun!
