There are some games that come in boxes so big that you wonder what the producers were thinking when they designed their storage solution. We can count on being hard pressed to run out of storage space for these games, but oh, our poor gaming shelves.

This is a list devoted to those lovely wastes of cardboard. Please add your finds. Try to use an image that emphasizes this waste of cardboard atrocity!

I repeat: Please try to find an image in the gallery that represents the oversized box and use that image in your geeklist addition. Thank you.

This would not be so bad if it was a 'regular' size box. It's just an oversize box when it's not needed. Even the board is not as big as the box suggests. It could be the same size as a Treefrog game. (Brass, London etc)

Here you can see the box compared to Power Grid, which is an over sized box itself.

With all the issues with the rules this game has, the ridiculous box is the final nail in the coffin.

Expansions are the worst offenders in this category. They often have a fraction of the bits, but come in a box ranging from half the size to the same size of the base game.

In this example you get a deck of small cards, a manual and three wooden tokens. I can fit everything in the base game box with the latter's plastic insert still inside (which is a good insert, for a change).

The expansion box is now used to store bags with hooks, nails, and the like...

See that cut out hole in the center? 100% of the components can fit in it with room to spare. The rest is wasted space.

And the trouble is, since the cut out is in the center, you can't even flip the insert upside down, and store Dixit 2 along the sides, you have to fold the flaps of the insert down to fit expansions in.

There is no board.

The obelisk could be 2 or 3 tiles.

The whole thing would fit in a box around 10% of the volume. This is embarassing to sell (as is Around the World in 80 Days - but at least that had a board which needs storing, even if it could be folded like On The Underground's)

about 80% air shake

The box contained 8 die-cut sheets each having 3 by 4 tiles on it. So even taking into account the need to have some extra room for these sheets the box could've been smaller as it would take 6 by 4 tiles. But it's a lot cheaper to just use a standard box-size. In this case Abacus went with the old Ravensburger flat box size, but decided to go with inferior cardboard...

This and "Panzer General: Allied Asssault" have enormous boxes for just a bunch of cards and counters. Just look at the divider and cry in despair:

The whole game, with sleeved cards, fits into a "Gheos"-sized box. However, you have to cut the marker board (cutting off each track of the board), and print the rules and summary sheet at 50% size. This makes a huge difference with the original box:

I agree that expansions are usually the worst offenders. The Scrolls expansion for Fresco is 10 tiles and a 1 sheet of rules. I understand the reasoning behind having a box, but this one is ridiculous.

RuneWars fit in an Arkham Horror-sized box, all but for one terrain tile that's a tad too large.

The RuneWars box is twice the size of Arkham Horror's.

The thing is with lots of entries in this list, is that the components of modular games like this one require more volume before the counter sheets are punched. After that, they fit in half their previous volume.

Still, RuneWars could have fit in a War of the Rings-sized box easilly.

About two thirds of the box are air due to the insert. The rest is about half full with all the components - miniatures, cards (sleeved in my case) and the 3D terrain.

Of course, there is the board that's rather huge and is folded into thirds.

Not the worst offender here, but the box is about an inch and a half too DEEP! See, it has a LOT of pieces, dice, cards, and the board. Then they made a GREAT tray to separate everything neatly and the board lays on top, acting as a sort of lid. Great! Except that the box has that extra space ABOVE the board. Once you stand the box up or tip it at all the board flips out of place and HUNDREDS of pieces and dice get thrashed about and mixed together. Sorting is a pain and those flags can be fragile.
