This was my favorite game when me and my siblings were kids, and we used to play it a lot. I dont know if this game still can be bought somewhere, but for children this game is perfect indeed! I know for certain that the one we got is not for sale.

Great hidden-identities racing game. The sweet spot is definitely three players (because then each player is facing four other turtles, two of which are dummies and two of which belong to other players), but it also works well with two or four.

Like Mago Magino, this is another kid's game in which Knizia has engineered a neat balance between cooperation and competition.

I'm kinda surprised nobody has mentioned Max yet. It's a terrific game for the 4-9 crowd (and possibly a bit older than that). It's a cooperative game, with simple rules, but allowing for some actual decision-making.

One could criticize the game (like any cooperative game, I guess) for being "multiplayer solitaire". But if you're looking for a game as a stepping stone to more complex cooperative games, like Lord of the Rings, then I recommend this one.

Huge hit with the entire kindergarten. Pretty jewels, deadly hazards, suspense, tricking each other. What's not to like? They were so audibly delighted that the assistant principal had to come down the hall to see what all the fuss was about.

Next time I'm bringing the board though. The kids had a hard time remembering that the explorer should be in your hand when you want to leave the mine rather than go deeper. I think having base camp will clear that up for them because then they can envision where their guy is going.

This is one of my nephew's favourite games. Before you protest about the reading, I assure you the only word he can read is BEN. He remembers what all the cards do. He doesn't understand the hidden roles, he just likes shooting people, but he really is able to play perfectly well. If you don't believe me, well, his dad didn't either, so my nephew gunned him down in the first turn of the game. 4yo boys understand the VOLCANIC.

I love to watch my 6 year old daugther move her chicken half way around the board, jump over two chickens and win the game all in one turn.

Nice, streamlined Stratego-alternative if you aren't already sick of ghost games in this age bracket. Three ways to win: capture all four of the other player's good ghosts, trick your opponent into capturing all four of your bad ghosts, or get one of your good ghosts across the board and out the door.

Skip the Junior version, I've played this with lots of four year olds and it has clicked with them. If needed, you can handicap it to make it a little easier by giving the child more than one card to hold as a goal, instead of just one. You can also use different total numbers of cards to make it harder on the grown up if you need to.

Push-your-luck card game with interesting scoring (only the biggest fish you collect in each category counts toward your total). Great multi-age game -- parents and older kids enjoy playing it with preschoolers and an attentive preschooler will soon have as good a chance of winning as a grownup. This is an especially good game for 4-5 year olds because it encourages them to focus on sorting, counting, and comparing, all of which are good building blocks for school -- and for more complex games!

This is actually a game of skill but requires no more to play than the ability to choose a card. My nephew loves it, but the bigger kids shuffle their cards and play randomly which breaks the game.

Sue Hemberger

Good two-handed tactile game (you're searching for pairs) with a cooperative element. The goal is for all of the players collectively to clean-up Laura's room (find pairs of items and put them in their proper shelves (which are puzzle-like)) before the sun goes down and the star comes out. Each mistake takes away a piece of the sun, so basically the players have to find every match before seven mistakes have been made.

OTOH, the star mechanism is nice because it creates tension/an objective without producing time-pressure. OTOH, the absence of time pressure can make the game seem very slow when you are playing with lots of little kids who are trying really hard not to make a mistake. So I wouldn't play it with more than two kids at a time.

Fun roll-and-move, pick-up-and-deliver game with nice bits and a few interesting twists to keep everyone involved -- even on other players' turns.

Basically, as you are gathering magic crystals and transporting them back to the wizard's house, you are in constant danger of being bewitched. If you are bewitched, your pawn is turned upside down, you drop your crystal (if you're carrying one), and suddenly your marker becomes a frog -- which looks like every other bewitched child's marker. To remove the enchantment, you must either hop slowly (1 space per turn) back to the wizard or you can move the wizard toward you (up to 3 spaces per turn, depending on the die roll). If the wizard comes to you, any other frogs he passes along the way will be disenchanted and turned back into children (i.e. your competitors) who can pick up dropped crystals (including yours) on any space to which they travel. Because each player has two pawns (a boy and a girl) to work with, there are real (but not overwhelming) decisions to be made.

I introduced this to sister, niece and nephew the other day as an alternative to Bang! (which I am sick of). We have only played twice, so nephew was still asking about some of the cards he hadn't seen much, but the symbols help to explain them, and he certainly gets the fundamentals of the game. You can tell when he picks up the Duck Shuffle card because he starts humming a dancing tune. Also, Quick Shot is very popular.
