I've been a science-fiction fan since aged 13, and a wargamer from the age of 18. I'm now 46. I like a lot of different types of games, but amongst my favourite type is the space empire game.

There have been very many space empire games, but how do they rate in terms of popularity?

To qualify, the game must be a strategic empire building / conquest game.

I'd like to see a space empire game that uses the card-driven approach of wargames such as We The People, combined with the area movement of wargames such as Storm Over Arnhem and the fog of war created by block games such as Hammer of the Scots.

Comes in a very large flat box, similar look to 4000AD. Never played.

Further expansion of the Starfire system, with very detailed random solar system generation.

Specifically, this is the campaign rules for second edition starfire (white boxed set)

I liked it, but it's slower than SF3, and not as well done as the 3rd ed's Imperial Starfire.

Made the mistake of buying BEFORE reading the back. This is a gropo game. Looks good, though I've yet to crack the box.

Not the best game from Attactix (see their introductory wargames Waterloo, Normandy and Arhem Bridge for better games from them)

Based on the Poul Anderson book, which is quite a hoot. Haven't played the game yet. Looks OK.

As I recall, the game plays rather well.

Odd little game, where the "board" consists of cards, and the "fleets" consist of tiny dice.

It is kind of lame. ( I bought it during my still ongoing space combat obsession.) It is a small battle with a few spaceships, and a simple ranged-die roll combat system. It has some neat spaceship upgrade types--but not enough.

The rulebook is great with a massively overblown title that just goes on and on and a seperate massive cheesy space opera text describing the complex backstory for the abstract little space game.

The name implies it belongs to the list, but I know little about it.

It is hardly classic, let alone a game... :p

A small set of poorly produced cards, it looks like it was an attempt to offer something like the Star Fleet Battles cardgame from Task Force, but with inferior rules, gameplay and no licensed tie in.

I designed and self-published this game in the mid '80s on a shoestring budget. I had no other game or tie-in in mind when I designed it. I simply wanted to play a "space empire" game with simple rules and a relatively short playing time, so I invented one. It had its fans at the time, and I never had anyone say the rules were unclear, but with hindsight I believe the design could have been improved. For one thing, I don't think I took advantage of the card game format as well as I might have. In many ways, it plays more like a board game than a card game. It sold a few hundred copies, with the remainder going to one game dealer at a discounted rate, so that at least I "broke even"!
