I went back to my home town over the weekend, so Barteus and I hooked up for some face-to-face gaming and I introduced him to the goodness of Battle Cry. We both love C&C:A for the deeper strategy and card combo management (compared to other C&C games). We like Memoir '44 because it's WWII and has so many options (air rules, Pacific, Mediterranean, etc).

This one has the best looking bits of the 3 games. He told me to pick out a good scenario because I played them all solitaire. I picked out Gettysburg Day 2. He took the Confederates and the South Rose again. He made a small advance up his left flank before making a strong push up the center and taking Devil's Den and the Corn Field. I barely held on to Round Rock, but had taken so many casualties, that it was only a matter of time before it fell. He won the victory point total: 7-2. He drew all three Leadership cards and used to great effectiveness.

My father introduced me to wargames when I was a child in the late 1970s (he played Gettysburg). I got instantly hooked, but never seemed to have the time to play the games with me. He also lost interest once I started getting into more complex wargames.

So it has been about 30 years since we played a hex and counter wargame.

At his request, we did so again on a rainy day as he recuperates from some recent surgery.

Gettysburg is special to him. Both sides of his family owned farms within a handful of miles from the historic battle site. So of course we had to play Gettysburg.

I thought he would have more fun as the Rebels (though I am more the Southern Sympathizer and he the staunch Unionist). The game began badly for him. I diced him in the early going and was able to establish some good defensive positions early on the First Day. Then, without warning, his dice got hot--very hot. Before I knew it, he took Culp's Hill and utterly destroyed my Yanks on Cemetery Hill. He then closed off the Baltimore Pike and the game was called at darkness on the First Day.

He loved it.

We got in a game of rock'em & sock'em tank action on Friday night with World at War Blood & Bridges. We played Tanks Mr Rico, Zillions of them!

it's pretty much a straight up tank fight with 60 Soviets vs 18 American and West Germans. Plenty of T-72s, T-80s & T-64s against M1 Abrams, Leopard IIs, Leopard Is, and M60A3s. Here's a piciture at the end with plenty of wrecks.

I broke out the Purple Box for a go at "Piercing the Peel", a scenario I found somewhere on the internet that features entrenched Dutch infantry facing a German assault. It's been too long since I played Squad Leader. The result was one of the worst-played solo adventures in SL history. The Dutch mowed down the hapless Germans. I must reacquaint myself with this game.

I know why I don't play this more often: it bears almost no resemblance to the history it seeks to portray. But I need to get over it. This is really fun, even (maybe especially) solo. There is a lot of factor counting, particularly at the outset when the forces are stacked high along the border. But after that initial slog, it becomes a lot of fun trying to figure out good fallback points for the Soviets and attempting to keep the German army somehow intact.

My ebayed copy has a lot of charm. Its box is beaten to hell, but it contains like 5 copies of the rules and the battle manual. It also includes the old play-by-mail kit, lots of photostatic copies (I purposely use the antiquated phrase) of the Turn Record Chart and a mapboard with handwritten hex coordinates. It positively radiates Old School Wargaming. It even smells like Old School Wargaming.

I don't know if I would ever want to play this against someone who is any good. I wouldn't have the patience for all the factor counting.

Played with my 7 year old daughter at her completely unprompted request (I was assuming she would want to play Ticket to Ride once again).

We met at Antietam, and with a few tactical pointers she played well. The game came down to the last die roll. Her Rebs were victorious and she was elated. I think I've lost 3 straight games to her.

On the table and being set up a little at a time. Love the fact that the Polish forces get victory points (a big chunk) for capturing Berlin.
Looking at the OOB for both sides how incompetent must the German player be for this to happen?

Played with the revised rules. Really not sure about it. We found it really easy to quickly overextend the defender and then get in amongst it very quickly. Also running around in the open in front of a Russian mmg did not seem very perilous. Did only play the first two scenarios and will try again with the vehicles next.

Does anyone else have a view? Am I trying to compare it to combat commander, which I have just posted as my favourite wargame, when they are both different creatures......confused but want to love it.

And Patch and I are back on our tour of CC:A. This time was Metaurus, with me as the disadvantaged Carthaginians. (4 cards to 6, 1 leader to 3....)

I had some good early luck with the first few turns of archery. The initial clash happened on the left flank (my right, I'm going by the Vassal board orientation), as he pushed up, and I was able to knock out a Med and push him back in exchange for most of a Heavy.

Things went back and forth in one section of the board after another before he finally started knocking out units. I had weakened a few more of his, but the four card limit was keeping me from being able to follow up any local successes.

Finally, he produced a Clash of Shields card that activated about six units. Half of the combats were on my river line on the right, and 4 dice there was just brutal. After that, I didn't have a center any more.

I sent in the Elephants, got a weak medium on a great roll, and then whiffed against his heavies, which promptly killed the elephants. An Order Mounted should have gotten me, but couldn't get a hit with one unit (and took two in return).

Desperate for points (well, I already was when the elephants went out), I Double Timed my leader and Heavies into the middle of his formation, knocking out a Med who had been reduced to one block very early on. My attack against a 2 block Heavy + leader only got one hit, but he missed completely, only scoring a banner which I took, forcing him into another card play, which ended the game. 3-7

Next week, we'll swap sides and go at it again.

After taking a break from this game for a while, Phantom Leader is back on my table today. I am playing the US Air Force 1972 Linebacker long campaign, the only campaign I haven't played before.

I've got my squadron picked (one less Newbie meaning no Newbies this time, and one extra Skilled pilot for this campaign).

It's storming so I hope the lights don't go out or I will be playing by whatever light comes through the window!

Twelve days of missions in this campaign, so I'd better get started!

I have played this thing a dozen times over the past few years and should be able to remember its very basic rules and its preferred tactics. Stupid assumption. It seems as if I don't play a game once a month, pffft! Tabula rasa.

I really dig PGG. Like the old Avalon Hill Classics, this one plays like a brain teaser puzzle, but the untried units and lots of rolls for overruns add some wonderful elements of surprise.

As a last time effort before the end of the month, Andzrej and I are going to crack open this game and begin a bloody struggle in Russia. After the game of Strike of the Eagle, we are in the mood of that great revolution period. Heads were chopped off all the time, romanticized by the Czech Legion ride to the east and Polish question of neutrality.

This is a classic game about the Russian Revolution from GMT. I missed out the game the first time around when it was published. I wanted it so much that I bought a second hand unpunched copy. Finally, I found an opponent who had the same interest in this uncommon subject.

Got this one to the table finally after owning it for nearly a year. I played the Easy Fox scenario. I think I grasped the rules well enough, with only a couple errors that I'm aware of. The errors were in the Germans favor.

I really like this game based on my first play. I hope to get this to the table again soon to reinforce my basic understanding. Seems like lots of replayability with this game.

Have played through 9 missions and 7 days of a 12 day Navy 2001 Israeli Defense campaign. I had 2 pilots shot down on one mission, of the 7 total present. I managed to rescue one under fire immediately, and the second returned to my squadron after a Search & Rescue event on mission 8.

If I can average 4 VP per day and suffer no more losses, I can grab a Great rating. We'll see.

Anyway, I love this game and am glad for any chance to get it to the table.

It's still too soon for me to form an opinion, but the mechanics are quite simple. Already we have won the right to school integration in Atlanta. We shall overcome!

Not one of those games that you would play out in public though... Even my girlfriend gave me a weird look when I described what game we were playing (and i'm playing the good guys).

I haven't been keeping up with this list this month, so I'm a little late. I played my first FtF game of the "En Pointe Toujours" tactical system this month. I've been interested in it as it seems suited to model more modern combat as well.

My first impression was rather positive, but units sure take a lot of time to die... Looking forward to playing a couple of other scenarios.

At the very last day of the month I played my first game of 'Seki' against my brother. Despite being beaten by Ruud, I liked the game a lot. Do you attack early, or wait to get some more usefull cards in your hand? Are you going to use your cards for extra movements/musters, or save them for a battle? Do you go for the resource points and castles or is it better to try to hunt down the enemy leader? Lots of interesting choices, and that in a relatively short game that as a bonus is also a pleasure to look at. I like the designer notes in the rule book too, they really explain very well what the mechanisms in this game seek to portrait.
