My father had issues seeing the symbols on the cards and the map. Overall everyone liked it, but I'm going to come up with some seeing impaired aids.

We played a 4 player game of 7 Wonders with the Leaders. It was fun.

I then started to show them how to play Runewars, but we only were able to finish 2 full years because we had to pack up and go home. Other then that I played video games.

Sorry Sliders - 7.0/10
Electronic Talking Mystery Mansion - 6.0/10

All Wound Up - 6.0/10
Drake & Drake - 7.0/10
Qwirkle - 7.0/10

Played a 3er lunch game of Ra on Friday and won.

I played 2 games of Friday on Friday. Won one and lost one.

Went to an Eastern Pennsylvania Gaming Society meeting on Saturday and played Trajan and Black Gold and didn't win either game.

Later that evening I visited with my Mom and played a "gateway" game of Ticket to Ride with my Mom, her new boyfriend, my Wife and Son. Mom's new boyfriend not a gamer, but he seemed to enjoy it, so hopefully the gateway game does it's job and he'll be open to more gaming at get togethers and such. I won the game. Beat my Wife by a few points. My Son was a close third.

On Sunday I showed my Son Friday. We played it together co-op style and lost.

First play in 3 years; first after acquiring it earlier in the week. Had 3 newbies over Sunday night after church. Was reminded how good it is. The two winners had to go to the level of the 2nd tie-breaker.

We finished the evening with a quick, 4-round game of Wildlife Safari which I won by a large score.

A full weekend of gaming with a Friday night CABS meeting and a Saturday afternoon wedding of two gamers. With that in mind, the theme of this week's post is:

Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.

Something old

The wedding on Saturday was unique, and the way that two gamers should celebrate such an affair. Catan wedding cake, with fondit roads, dice, and settlements. Guests attending in their favorite gamer attire. Most importantly, to me anyway, was the extra space set aside with tables for gaming.

Later in the evening, we had a group of six playing that favorite game "What do we want to play next?". I brought a few games for four and five, but none for six. Oops. Luckily, sorta, we got our hands on an old favorite from my childhood: Clue.

Something New

Friday night and again on Saturday afternoon, I broke out a new purchase to teach to different groups. Takenoko is the latest from Antoine Bauza, designer of the much heralded 7 Wonders. I always appreciate it when a designer attempts something different than the last game, and Takenoko is worlds apart from 7 Wonders.

And, for me, it's a better game. I'm surprised this one hasn't received more attention, but I think that may be due to the theme and box cover. The box art is cute, the theme is cute, so the game has cutesy written all over it. Perhaps everyone assumes it's a simple game for kids, or that it's so sweetly cute, it can't be much fun.

And there is no denying it's an adorable game. The artwork, the painted panda & gardener, the wooden bamboo shoots, and the colorful tiles all put on a smile on your face. But there is a nice game here as well. A much better family or gateway game than 7 Wonders could ever hope to be, Takenoko is simple to learn, fun to play, and strategic enough to hold everyone's interest.

Something Borrowed

Friday night we borrowed two games from the CABS library that I've been meaning to try. First up, was Feld's In the Year of the Dragon. The club copy is well worn, and I can see why. I wonderful game of attempting, and occassionaly failing, to avoid disasters. This game has been on my Wishlist, and it's moved up the priority level on it after one play.

Next up at CABS was The Princes of Florence. Another well used club copy, and again for a good reason. Tough choices with such limited money and actions. I can see why this one is rated so highly.

Something Blue

Saturday evening's gaming ended with a marathon session of Cards Against Humanity. A party style game that I can best describe as Apples to Apples for those with twisted minds. Very much a "blue humor" game, it was all about laughing and having a good time. We kept adding players as the game went on. The laughter kept drawing them in. Recommended with alcohol expansion.

Played a ton of games this weekend in Ottawa, visiting family.

Thursday:
Airlines Europe 4er
Friday:
Jaipur with the mother in law
Dominion: Hinterlands 4er played the two recommended set ups with Intrigue.
Eminent Domain with my brother
Saturday (Ottawa Game Summit: Board Game Blitz)
Vikings 4er came dead last
7 Wonders fastest 4er I've ever played, not part of the tournament, just killing time. came 2nd.
Octopus' Garden X2 4er won this one
Can't Stop the dice, they hate me. 4er
Goa it's really too bad we didn't get to finish this game because it was really, really fun. I can't wait for the reprint to find its way into my collection. Came 2nd, though who knows what would have happened during the final round...
Automobile I was a little gamed out by the time we started this one, but so were my opponents. I couldn't help but notice how I was making terrible decisions, but all my advice to the player next to me won him the game. And i'm not saying that arrogantly, he really didn't want to play, trying to "pass" as his first action in the first round.
Sunday:
Eminent Domain again with my brother. I'm late to this one, but I really like it.

I attended part of MittenCon this past weekend. As such, I had an unusually great weekend of gaming! Here is what I played, in chronological order:

Saturday, starting at 4:00 PM:
Dragon Valley - This game arrived just in time for the convention. We played a 3-player game. It was really tough to split up the resources, but very easy to decide what to do with them once you had your "slice of the pie". Each player followed a different strategy, but the final score was very close. I'm looking forward to more plays.

Roll Through the Ages: The Bronze Age - After grabbing dinner, I came back to find everyone engaged in a game except one guy. We played a quick game of Roll through the Ages. This is a staple for my wife and I, so I was happy to play it again.

Kingdom Builder - When we finished Roll through the Ages, another couple of guys wanted to play a quick game, so we broke out Kingdom Builder. This was only my second time playing, and I got killed again. But I liked it better the second time. I could see how clever play would lead to a better score. One guy made excellent use of the horses and and scored a solid win.

Pantheon - Next a guy wanted to play Pantheon. I had heard of it, but not played it. I thought I was doing poorly until the first scoring phase, where I was in second place. I ended up losing by only 6 or 7 points (the winner had about 113 points). I really enjoyed the game. The only issue I see is an early mistake or two can put you permanently behind, with no hope of catching up.

Flash Point: Fire Rescue - At about midnight, we decided to play a co-op game to end the day. I had played FPFR twice before, and really enjoy it. We had five players, and played the beach house on Veteran level. We only rescued 3 POI before the house collapsed, killing everyone except the Driver. Just too many chaining of hotpots to overcome. In hindsight, we should have started with both the Driver and CAFS until the fire was more under control.

Sunday, starting at 10:00 AM:
The Princes of Machu Picchu - A friend and I had discussed having an Incan-themed morning, as I had brought Princes, and he had brought Inca Empire. Since I got to the table first, I set up Princes and we played a 4-player game. We almost saved Machu Picchu, but fell two virgins short. This allowed one player to run away with the win due to the Spanish gold scoring multiplyer. The two end-game scoring scenarios can result in an unsatisfying conclusion to an otherwise fun gaming experience.

Star Trek: Fleet Captains - My friend didn't feel like we'd have time to finish Inca Empire before he had to leave, so I grabbed lunch, then set up for a 2-player game of STFC with

, who wanted to learn the game. He played the Federation, while I was the mightly Klingon Empire. I drew a mostly science fleet (very unusual for the Klingons), but we still had some interesting battles in the game. The Federation managed 5 VPs on their final turn, resulting in a 10-7 win for them. The game only lasted 1:45, which was very acceptabe for a first-time player. We had Q, The Nexus, an Unstable Wormhole, the Klingons self-destructing a ship just to deal one point of damage (which was prevented anyway), and lots of other interesting moments. This is still one of my favorite games.

Battlestar Galactica - I wrapped up the convention by playing BSG. It was a 5-player game, using elements from both expansions. This was my first time playing with the cylon fleet activation board, and I found it a nice addition to the game. As Apollo I was also CAG, which was new to me too. I started the game as a cylon, but played it cool until after the sleeper phase and a forced jump by Admiral Cain. At that point (distance 6), the cylons were poised to swarm from the activation board to the main board, so I revealed and threw Chief Tyrol in the brig. Two player turns later, Morale hit zero and the cylons were victorious. The other cylon ended the game by reducing Morale by five points on his turn alone. Good times, good times. robot

All in all, another great MittenCon, and finally a great weekend of gaming!

This was a great weekend as I went to Orccon here in L.A. and was able to play some the war games that I have been wanting to play!

A special thanks to the War game boot camp put on there each year for a great gaming day!

Combat Commander: Europe
This was one of the reason for me to go. I have owned this game since it first came out and I have all three in shrink never played. Lucky for me they have a copy of everything there ready for play.

All the time I waited was well worth it. I had a fantastic time learning and playing this game. I was the defending Germans vs. the Attacking Americans. I only had one card I could play per round until time events added more to me.
Things looked good as I setup in buildings and waited for the Americans. They made some great attacks and with their card advantage really brought the fight to me. I has some very, very good events happened and managed to eliminated one leader via 2 sniper cards. Then a very large fire group managed to kill their 2nd leader. With no leaders it was a uphill battle for the Americans the Germans ended with a decisive victory.
I am hooked and hope to get this game played as much as I can.

A Few Acres of Snow
Next up I played this at the boot camp also. I played the French. This game took a bit to get my head around to figure out what was going on. There are a lot of different aspects to learn. In the end, I won by one victory point. While I do see all the hype about the game and the very intelligent design, im not sure this one is a keeper for me.

World Conquerors
Played this game with the designer and two other players. I came in a close 2nd and did enjoy the fast pace nature of this world domination game. I ended up buying this game and got a singed copy from the designer.

Lifeboat
While at the con I also got in two players of this gem. We play this regularly at our game group and playing with 7 random players made this one interesting game. I believe I got killed in both games but had a blast.

Sunday evening play time, my wife was too tired for Ora & Labora so we opted for Stone Age. I got off to a great start, a nice gold hut and good rolling of the resources put me out in the lead. My wife again emphasized tools over anything else, that strength began to pay over the long term. She had begun to collect the symbols again (last game was a lot of symbols and tools) but I collected some of those too and we ended about even. My trouble was that I hadn't gotten a lot of other end game scoring, I had a single field in mid-game and a tool bonus just to stop hers getting too much. Toward the end I got a decent meeple bonus so made more use of the love hut, but by now my wife's resource collecting was going into some big scores in the hut building. I had a chance to end the game but I was only a little ahead on current score and figured I was going to be overtaken on end game. So I delayed the inevitable, we cashed in and I was able on the last turn to get up to 6 farmers for a nice field bonus (and making me wish I pushed my fields a little higher). But my wife scored well, with both tools and meeples. I thought I had competed better than our last game, but she scored more and I scored less!

We turned to a light game to close out the evening, Biblios has been good in this role for us. An odd sort of draft, as by mid-way I had hardly any gold, so I set about gathering, managing a decent supply of 2s. I had 3-4 strong colors and nothing in the scrolls (and my strength in the other 4 rather depended what she had and what I could gather during the auction). It was immediately apparent that my wife wanted the pigments to be high scoring, but I had a decent foundation in that category. And about mid-auction round, it looked like I had the gold superiority as she was passing more, I was able to add 2 more pigment cards to my hand. As she was apparently ignoring the quills (I had 7 there) and I was pretty good in scrolls and tomes, I thought I was in a good position. But then gold came out of the deck in a flood and my wife used her excess cards to outbid me. So she captured several cards in the end game, making the outcome in doubt. It tuned out she out-did me in books, to my dismay, but it all hinged really on the 6 point pigments and I surprised her by taking it from her.

Loads of games this weekend, with a few being new to me.

Friday night, started off with my friend's new copy of Dungeon Petz. We played 4 player, and I came in third, but I loved it. What an awesome game, just as good as Dungeon Lords (which I also love). After that, one player left, so we played a 3 player game of Caylus, which I won.

Saturday was the monthly meetup. Started out in a 4 player game of Discworld, which ended really quickly due to some lucky cards of one of the players. Then it was time for the game of hte day that I was waiting for, Mage Knight. We had 4 of us and played the full conquest. It was a long game, since it was the first game for 3 of us. The owner won, and I took second, and it is definitely a game I am going to have to get when it is reprinted.

Afterwords, I played in a 3 player game of Stone Age which I won, and then finished off the night with a win in a 4 player game of Caylus (beating my wife by only 4 points).

On Sunday, went over to my parent's house. We played two 4-player games of Ticket to Ride, one on the US map (which I won), the other on the Legendary Asia map (which I lost). Then a 3 player game of Lords of Vegas finished the night in which I lost horribly.

Great weekend!

Played two games of Dungeon Petz this weekend, both three-player affairs. My wife won the first, I won the second. Our friend, who was new to the game, was shut out (though he did come a close second in our second game).

My wife enjoys the puzzle aspect of the Need cards and fulfilling those needs. In that respect, it seems to fill a similar niche as London for her.

As much as I enjoy that aspect of the game, it fails for me in a couple other areas. One, I dislike the randomness of it. While there are short term strategies to be found - selecting pets that suit your pens or pens to suit the future growth of a pet, selecting pets that meet future buyers or shows, these strategies only carry forward two or three turns. So, on the whole, the game feels much more tactical than strategic and there's no epic feel to it. When I'm done, I can't even tell you which pets I raised.

So, while it's a good game, I don't see it rising above an "8" for me.

I got to play Dungeons & Dragons: The Legend of Drizzt Board Game for the first time this week-end -- a 2-player game of scenario 2 with my partner. She generally doesn't like dungeon-crawlers (and she hates D&D), but we both enjoyed playing this game. It's much simpler than your typical RPG/wargame/dungeon-crawler:
there is no facing or line-of-sight (except for walls), no detailed range or hit location, no component wear/unit attrition, etc.

I usually like more complicated gameplay, but it was fun because of the story we generated as we played. For example, the first monster that appeared was a troll on the tile with the bridge over the chasm (and everyone knows that trolls live under and guard bridges). Also, the ghostly monster that calls your character towards it was in the narrow passageway. Anyway, it's a simple dungeon-crawler, but fun! And with the semi-random tile generation and random monsters and treasures, it should stay interesting for a while.

Still playtesting my variant for Elder Sign, I played three games this week-end with 3, 5, and 8 investigators. It seems to work pretty well, so far, making the game a bit harder to win, simplifying the time-keeping but making it more "realistic", and allowing a bit more player interaction. In the two games that I (barely) won before the doom track filled, I still played out the "Elder God Awakens" part of the game to test it. That part of the game still needs a bit of tweaking, I think. I am also going to include a couple of optional rules for those who want to make the game harder or easier.

We also played a 2-player game of Jack goes to market, which is a free print-and-play trading game. With two players, there just isn't enough interaction so it felt too much like a puzzle game. I think this game would be much more fun with 3 or 4 players, and I hope to get a chance to try it out with more players.

One 4-player game of Cities & Knights with the fishermen expansion from Traders & Barbarians. It was a close game with longest road factoring heavily into the final outcome. My wife usually wins, but I won this time, and she had to settle for 2nd. She almost pulled out the win on multiple turns.

Three 4-player games of Dominion with all expansions. We played some wacky kingdom sets (on purpose) - all victory cards, all alchemy cards, and a half attack / half reaction set.
