While looking for games to buy for my 4 year old nephew, I've read many geeklists about children's games (including all those in Friendless' metalist, "Geeklists About Games For Kids"). And I noticed that several of the games on those lists were designed by some of BGG's favourite designers (like the authors of Euphrat & Tigris, Princes of Florence, Die Macher, The Settlers of Catan, etc...) But, I hadn't run across a geeklist that focused on these games - so, I thought I'd make one.

The following is a list of children's games by some of BGG's favourite designers (picked from Glamorous Mucus' "Prestige Rating" geeklist series). The games are shown with their current average rating in brackets. I've put an asterisk beside games that have not been categorized as "Children's Games" on BGG, but which either appear to be, or user comments suggest are, games for kids (or atleast straddle the line between these and family games). I'm not familiar with most of these games, so I tried not to label them unless someone else had already done so (in user comments or on other geeklists).

If one of your favourite designers has also made children's games, but were not included in this list, please add them and list their games. I would also welcome comments on the games already listed.

Please avoid adding single game entries just because they're children's games. That is not the purpose of this list. Thanks.

FWIW, we had a really fun 4-player game of Viva Topo! recently and which leaves me wondering whether I've underestimated the game because I've generally played it with 2 which is probably not optimal.

Everything Sue said especially Schil... being fun for adults only. Although we prefer Viva Topo over Magino just because younger ones enjoy the whole mice get cheese or cat gets mouse type tension and with more than two players less cheese means more tension in the push your luck decisions

Most people are familiar with Gulo Gulo from Kramer (I recommend it). But a welcome reward for this list bulding exercise was finding Janosch Schatzsucher. From the description, it is a re-working of Expedition/Wildlife Adventure for kids. Intriguing.

I've had good luck so far with Zoch Verlag games. Combine this with a game by a popular designer that can be played by older gamers, and I think I may just get Pick Picknic for myself. Ahem... at least until the nephew's old enough to play .... That, along with Igloo Pop and Schicki Micki (some other non-Dorra Zoch games), will give us all something to look forward to.

Other than Die Macher, I hadn't been aware of most of Karl-Heinz Schmiel's designs. So, it was a pleasant surprise to find that the person behind one of the heavier euros had made a game that appears to be about a tight-rope walking jester that dispenses shoes to villagers. And you thought a game about German politics was an innovative theme... Tch.

Leonardo/Ricochet/Ikarus (all the same game) is another of his kids' games. In some interview I read, he had a great story about designing the game starting from an image of people playing it. Everyone is totally still, but their eyes are all rapidly darting back and forth until someone abruptly slaps the table. And it's just like that -- you're following a series of visual prompts to determine the last card in a sequence and the first person to touch that card wins.

Morgan Dontanville's enthusiasm for Der Plumpsack Geht Um keeps me looking at this game. I've already picked up Chicken Cha Cha Cha (plus the poop expansion), so I'm a bit reticent about getting more memory games for now. A little mechanics diversity would be nice in a kid's game collection, I think. But, yeah, I'll probably break down and get it soon enough.

Sherlock/Plumpsack is really cheap and very quick. For adults, a more fun and more competitive memory game than Chicken Cha Cha Cha (in which you will experience humiliating defeat after humiliating defeat, LOL!). Both are worth having if you play games with kids.

So true! I'm continuously amazed at how poorly I do at Chicken Cha Cha Cha. My nephew barely seems to be paying attention to the game (and he still hasn't cottoned to the idea of leaving the poop in one place - he trails it along behind his chicken like a little spooled wagon). Then, suddenly, he'll start flipping whole series of tiles like it was nothing. He must be defeated! Heh.

It's an older kids game. 8 through 12. Good filler for adults too. It relies too much on memory and thinking fast to be good for kids younger than 8.

One of the variants included with the main game, called Oraklos Junior, is for children as young as 6 years old. Kindersplotter?

Excellent listing! and it's amazing, how many games strictly for kids are not listed as such!

I'm torn on the "childrens' game" classification issue on the Geek. OTOH, I think it's a real problem that if you sort on childrens' games and pull up a list, it's filled with garbage and missing most of the good stuff for kids. OTOH, I think "childrens' game" gets read as "only a child (or someone who is doting on a child) would enjoy this game" in this context and so it functions as kind of a pejorative or dismissal.

My sense is that Faidutti's ideal games library includes only games he enjoys and that what he classifies as childrens' games are games that he believes most children will be able to play. That's the combination I'm looking for (i.e. fun for an adult who likes/has played lots of good games and also accessible to a kid), but it's much easier to identify when you're already being selective about what's in your database (i.e. Bruno's first cut is "I like it.").

On BGG, where every game published may be included (and where thousands of different people are invited to voice an opinion) in the database, I'm not sure it's possible to construct that category through the game entries themselves. In the end, I think you have to rely on things like comments and geeklists to identify the overlap. But if we do want to refine the categories/classifications to help people find good kids' games, the best approach I can come up with would be to "kids only" and "kids and adults" as alternative boxes you could check.

Sue I think they are great ideas. Morgan I think rating the way you describe is a good way to do it. I do similar but add .5-1 depending on the kid's level of enjoyment or benefit they get out of it. The difficulty comes when you want to use games as a means to develop children. I mean memory games are important for a childs development but some of them just bore me to sleepytime. Snap is great for pattern recognition and gross motor skills but again snore. There's an idea for a geeklist common children's games and their euro alternative. Enough rambling...

Yeah, Morgan's kind of 75% the same as me on how he rates it. I think if you like playing a kids' game you should rate it highly. The fact that it isn't as deep as say Age of Steam is 100% irrelevant - "is it a great game that I and my kids enjoyed?" is the question to ask, not "would I play it with my gaming mates?"
(though in some cases you might - esp after a few beers - Gulo Gulo, Looipn' Louie)
I work the ratings that way myself - but reserve a point or two either way for how the kids liked it, too.

There ought to be a lot of kids' games that get strings of ratings above 7. I've got several I gave 8s and 9s to. I think anyone who's played a lot of kids' games (as I have) ought to do that to show which ones they consider the best.

And I'm a kid at heart too - aren't most men, most gamers, and most folks who have a hobby?

There's some crackers on this list...but there are many other good ones, too.

Maybe BGG needs a separate rating per category where you rank it from 1-10 on how well it fits the category?
