I'm looking for input on wargames that solitaire well (hence the title).

There are awesome, classic solitaire-only games, but I'd like to play a few that will help build my wargaming skills in the off-chance I find an opponent.

I'd like low- to mid-complexity with a couple hours gameplay would be nice.

Below are a few I've come across; all are WWII era, but I'm open minded.

I have starter kits #1 and #2. I've enjoyed the solo play, but definitely need more play-time with another opponent to build my skills.

The SCS series of games are great for solo play as well. They cover all the bases for typical hex-and-counter wargame designs, including supply, zones of control, etc.

Each game in the series are quite varied too, so you should certainly be able to find one that appeals to you. However, this entry (which I consider the best of the series) also happens to be out of print at the moment.

Or another of the Avalon Hill classics (except naval games, which usually have some sort of search system that makes solo play awkward--though the tactical side of a game like Jutland plays OK solo).

I put off buying this for years, then bought it recently when fellow Geeks told me it was great for solitaire play. They were right!

It's even better with an opponent (I played a couple games PBEM), but solo play works well partly because of the activation rolls: you only get to move a few units each turn, so you have to be selective. Kinda like a chit-pull mechanic, except that you get to choose which units to move.

I picked up this little gem for cheap because I was interested in the battle. It really fits the bill for what I'm looking for - mid to low complexity and doesn't miss a beat playing solo, but would be fun with an opponent. Too bad there's no Vassal module.

Here's a platoon level WWII game, the same scale as Panzer Grenadier, but it's a bit more streamlined. The fact that it uses chit pull for activation means that you'll have some tension in solo play because you won't know which formation (of either side) will activate next.

There is also a World at War Series with a similar system for hypothetical 1980's battles if that's of interest.

I could have added Paths of Glory, but NR plays quicker.

I realise that they are card driven games and therefore should not solo well. However I think they do. They both have low unit density , which is good for solo play, you are only activating a few units each turn, which is again great for solo play. And as long as you play your cards with the mindset of 'if you didn't know the opponants cards, what would you play' I think it's fine.

I don't have a problem with this idea, and whilst it's not as good as face to face, it's OK
