This may turn out to be the shortest GeekList in history. It's a probably doomed attempt to identify the very best solitaire-friendly games around--and some dyed-in-the-wool solo gamers as well.

So, here's how it works. Just add an item (more than one, if you like) to this list which you would honestly say the following about:

"As long as I can play this game solitaire, I don't care if I ever play any two-or-more-player game."

Edit: For some, the above statement isn't strong or clear enough, apparently. So here's your clarification: If you add an item to this list, it should be a game that you love playing solo so much that it (along with, perhaps, other solo games) would satisfy all your gaming wants and needs, and you'd be perfectly happy (gamewise) even if you never, ever played any two-or-more-player game again in your life.

IOW, you're saying, in effect, Give me this game (and any others I list), and I'll strand myself alone on the proverbial desert island.

You were actually very clear, I just found it hard to believe that anyone would ever give up all gaming with other people over one solitaire game. Clearly, this is not a geeklist for me.

Having play this solo and multiplayer... I don't think it makes a licking difference... I would even go as far as to say... I prefer this solo as I don't think I want to put another friend through this tacked-on-theme with abstract mechanics game... Its a so-so intellectual puzzle solo though.

(I am assuming that this list is for games that are actually playable multiplayer.)

A commenter mentioned this at the bottom, but it deserves to be on the list. The few times I've managed to set this up and play it I've found my hunger for board gaming is temporarily sated (at least until the next Game Night gathering). This is the heaviest game I've played, but also the most immersive.

I've got it set up right now, as I'm in the process of learning it.

I hope it proves to be a great solo experience.

It works for up to 16 players, though (more, if you expand it), so somebody out there is bound to say, You haven't experienced the full beauty of Magic Realm till you've played with several good opponents. That kind of remark always dampens my spirits a little: it suggests that what I'm doing with the game is just a shadow of the real thing. I never seem to enjoy it as much after that.

Sometimes I seek out designed-for-solitaire games just to fend off such spirit-dampening comments.

This is an excellent solo game.

We had a local gaming group that played Magic Realm at least once a month for over 10 years (nearly 200 playings in all), but even back then I would play solo playtest games quite often. Now it's been nearly 20 years since I last played a live game against other people, but I still enjoy playing it solitaire.

Hmmm... well, of course Magic Realm is better as a social, multi-player live game, but you shouldn't let that diminish your enjoyment of the game as a solo activitiy.

But, the one thing that I would never do when playing Magic Realm solo is to run just a single character. To me, that would be completely pointless, as much of what makes MR such a great game is lost when only a single character is in play. I normally run three characters when I play solo, and have them compete or cooperate as the situation demands.

Now, for a beginner who is just learning MR, playing a single character makes a lot of sense... but only until you get comfortable with the rules and gameplay. At that point, you need to get at least two competing characters on the map so you can see what the game is really like.

If you are enjoying yourself, why would you care what other people think? You could post right back at them that they haven't really played Magic Realm until they've played it by themselves as Patrick Carroll.

You're right. And thanks for that. But in the back of my mind, I'd always wonder whether I was missing out on something really great.

Even now, at the very beginning of my long-delayed Magic Realm career, I'm already thinking I might have to someday teach the game to someone or join a group that plays the game. Just because it seems like that's how the game was meant to be played, I guess.

I spent about fifteen years enjoying the heck out of Squad Leader and ASL, always solo. All that time, I told myself that once I learned the game thoroughly, I'd find an opponent and play it "right." But I never did. Finally I got fed up with the game and abandoned it (there was no end to rules learning and relearning).

As much as I'm into solitaire gaming, I'm still susceptible to popular opinion. I'm not nearly as independent as I like to imagine I am.

There's no ONE game I could say that about.

This one is a vital part of my solo repertoire though.
With the size and depth, it takes a good amount of my time,
and when I finish, I usually want to play it again.

My ardor cooled over the past few years - but I'm hoping
either the Risto events or (maybe just maybe) EU-8 will
rekindle the love that was once there.

Besides, games like LGG, EU and the likes have so much going on at any giving time that playing them solo is really not so difficult.

I am always surprised to see how people react to solo gaming. Almost all games can be played solo...

Really, when you're playing solo, you're just removing the social aspect of boardgaming, which isn't necessarily a bad thing...

Ok - here's one that potentially COULD drive away all other gaming.

Not in terms of caring/pleasure, but in terms of eating up the
rest of my life. Several times I've started playing this, where
I'd play out every damned engagement using Star Fleet Battles.

Maybe the only game I quit due to lack of time, again and again.
There're just too many other great games to solo. F&E's base game
isn't even that good - but it's a hell of a scenario generator for
big fleet battles.

This one is a hopeful contender. Only on my first playing
right now, but it shows all the elements I really want in a
big strategic game. Then again, I wouldn't put A3R/EotRS onto
this list, so maybe my feelings about WWII will prevent me from
ever fully accepting this one either. Still, like WiF, I think
this has the potential to vary enough from the historical, yet
still remaining believable, to interest me. And there are a LOT
of decisions to make - big ones.

Forget* what is in the other people's hands - EXCEPT, you may want to
notate that they have some sort of intercept (or not) with annotation
like tilting the particular card.

Then, IF they have a tilted card, and a result they don't like is
happening, look at their hand and see if they can effect change.

* Although I'm very good at forgetting things, I often help with
little breaks.

He can't muster the numbers either.

Actually, I managed to play this at CSW.

I found it less enjoyable than solo - dealing with people
I don't know well in a situation surrounded by even more
people I don't know is very tiring - even though I pulled off
a victory (none too surprising for a dip-style game with people
who don't know me).

I'm with Mr. Bickman, I love this game solo, but I actually prefer the multi-player competitive game even more.

I agree. A deluxe version from GMT would be great.

All the Lock n Load Heroes games that I have(Lock 'n Load: Band of Heroes, Lock 'N Load: Forgotten Heroes; Vietnam, Lock 'n Load: Heroes of the Gap and Lock 'n Load: A Day of Heroes) are fun to play solo and the scenarios have a cinematic feel to them.

What's not to like about gunning down hordes of aliens in a xenocidal rampage? Alhtough I just got Tomorrow's War (second edition) off amazon and that seems to have much more chrome and tactical decisions.

Actually, I was disappointed with Tomorrow's War (second edition) not as good as the base system it evolved from Force on Force. I was expecting to have a tactical Warhammerish 40K game with lots of different xenos, but the game is actually set in the relatively near future.

Yeah, I know. But I've been playing campaign games with it and Panzer Leader on and off for close to 30 years. I've got a huge set and could play at a multi-Corps level if I felt like it. My current campaign game is well into it's third year, and there's no end in sight.

I use a number of my own, and other's, mods, which keep it feeling contemporary, even compared with Panzer Grenadier and the Lock and Load offerings. If all of my other games disappeared tomorrow, I'd still have a lifetime of happy gaming with this old veteran.

Surprised no one has added this yet. Fun quick fantasy that is still entertaining solo.

Edit: This game is more fun with more people so I would never give up additional players to play it solo or any other game for that matter. I like company while gaming, if I want to play solo I turn my Xbox/PC on.

Throw me in a room, lock the door, and throw away the key! This is, by and large, the greatest solo game ever created! D-day at Omaha Beach is pretty awesome too! Ambush! works great with eAmbush!

Hmm ... I think maybe it could, for an experienced player. So far I've played only once or twice, and I was busy learning the rules. I had to look things up every now and then, and I played the game in two sittings. I'd guess I spent a couple hours at it, all told. But I was in no hurry.

I hope you blog about magic realm, its a game I've always been interested in and I'll surely solo it before bringing it to a group, just to help myself learn the rules.

Great game, no, it usually takes longer... not a bad thing... more like 35-45 minutes.
