I made a thread a few days ago after being beaten by one of my kids at a game. Feelings of pride and shame simultaneously swirled through me and I had to write about it.

One person mentioned I should make a geeklist of it so here it is!

Over the weekend my 8 year old son and I played this game 2 player. It's a good game, I like to play it with my boys because it has some stategy, some luck and it's educational. I thought, this will be nice for him to learn. Yeah.. he beat me 3 TIMES IN A ROW. All I can say is, the kid knows how to organize and prioritize. I wasn't even trying to be nice either. I was giving it my all.

There was a time in life (game cube era) where video games were relatively new to my children and I would play nice to build their confidence and help everyone have fun together. Those days are gone. I don't know where these kids got their button mashing skills from but their Mario Kung Fu is better than mine.. that and my cheap trick combos just don't seem to work any more.

To seek the sacred river Alph, to walk the caves of ice, to break my fast on honey dew and drink the milk of paradise... I had heard the whispered tales of immortality, the deepest mystery, from an ancient book I took a clue.
mbmbmbmbmb
Shamelessly cut and paste this from the thread and I've recounted this story before here on the BGG. My most memorable loss in gaming occurred when Ava, who was 9 at the time, asked to play the Union in a game of Devil's Den I had set up over winter break a few years ago. We have been board gaming together for quite a few years and she has been an avid audience member for a number of my more serious war gaming sessions. I found her request just "adorable" and agreed with my guidance on rules and what not.

Right from turn one as Law's brigade entered the board and made a dash for the woods to hit Little Round Top, my girl contracted her line on Devil's Den and began repositioning the cannons to create two lines of defense. The 4th Maine moved from positions near Plum Run to closer to the higher elevation and refused to form an "L" shaped line near the crest.

By this time my Texans were already advancing upon the Union forces on the Devil's Den and on her first turn firing at my forces she managed to break up a good portion of my line and really weakened my initial volley and assault on her line. The worst part came when she opened up with the cannons in successive turns blasted holes all through my line. The Georgians that were coming up to the left of the Texans fared no better and my attack stalled at the crest with incredible casualties.

The Union units for the 5th Corp made a solid line on Little Round Top, but farther back than the historical line due to the Alabama Regiment's being able to form a line and position on the side of the hill. I was able to gain some ground but the defensive line she formed held and I was only able to gain a foothold and had no reinforcements to send from the Devil's Den. In fact I had to detach one Alabama regiment to try and break the line on Devil's Den.

By this time she had an inverted V position on the Devil's Den using the stone fence and the Rose Woods as one arm, the cannon as the apex, and an extended line on the exposed side of the slope supported by the withdrawn cannon as an anchor. My valiant units were like water breaking against a rocky shore and I could not break her line.

By the time 80 percent of my units were ineffective I told her that in a historical context I would realistically call a retreat and conceded the game to her. I was proud of my little girl, but could not help feel the burning sense of shame of a full grown man defeated by a 9 year old child on the proverbial field of battle. blush

A moment of pride and humility, but a good lesson to never overestimate myself or underestimate another, no matter how small.

Even considering I was a freshman in high school, I never expected to lose a game of chess in about 10 moves. And against someone playing about a dozen people at once nonetheless.

Today I'm pretty sure I could make it 20 moves against the same person.

Playing chess against a master is a humbling experience.

I broke this out to play with my wife and my 3 year old and my 5 year old.

The 3 year old takes his first three mice directly into the first cheese slot, and his 4th mouse, having no competition for dice, made it all the way around to the 6 cheese wheel. He beat us all, 9 to 5, 6 and 3.

I am afraid for when he learns to play real games!

From my session report: I thought she was going to cry...

My wife and I sat down to play our second game of Tobago in one day last night (her third game of it total) and the end was a riot.

She loves to play with me, but she hates learning new games, she has told me it's literally her least favorite thing to do. There's no hyperbole there. So when she finds a game she likes she wants to play it as often as possible.

We played a two-player game last weekend that went pretty well. She won, which is a plus for her. Then we played a three-player game Monday morning with our 9 year old daughter (well, my daughter, her step-daughter who she loves likes they're blood). The wife had a decent time with it, but liked it better two-player (she has a hard time beating the daughter in anything other than Survive! Escape from Atlantis).

So Monday night, there's no football on, we're sitting around after dinner, the kids are at there Mom's house for the night, and she tells me her Tobago itch wasn't scratched in the game earlier. She wants to go head-to-head again. Now we had been playing games off and on all day, I killed her a few times in Monopoly Deal and Uno (both her idea) and she slaughtered me at San Juan (also her idea, I've never beat her, she knows I probably never will so she likes it) and I could tell she was out for blood with Tobago. She had me in her sights and she was going to gun me down.

The game starts pretty hot and heavy. Brown and White get collected after only 2 cards played on them each. Gray gets narrowed down to four cubes but we can't seem to get the cards to eliminate and more. The Black treasure keeps having cards laid on it, but the possible locations at still too many. Brown gets collected again, only 5 cards on it.

Our treasure piles are pretty even and I've snagged the only 6's to come out so far so I think I'm doing pretty well. Black still hasn't been collected and we keep piling cards on Gray. The wife narrows it down and I collect it. She gets 5 treasures to my 3. We both hop around the island collecting amulets and waiting for our chance to pounce on Black or White which now has about 7 cards on it.

She narrows White down to one and I dig up the treasure. I get my cards to look at, a 4 and a 3, not great but whatever. The wife meanwhile has 5 markers on White and she's hoping to cash in. She shuffles and lays down the first treasure card, BAM, a curse card. She's devastated that all of her efforts go to waste, I'm pretty much okay with it.

The next turn I get Gray narrowed down to one, and collect it the turn after that. We each get 3 treasure cards and alas one of mine is the other curse. I get the first two dibs, so I'm hoping I can at least pull something in before it comes out. She shuffles the treasure cards again and lays the first one out. AGAIN it's the curse card. No harm no foul, neither of us got anything.

By now the treasure deck is pretty thin, and we finally collect the Black treasure. After doling them out there is only one treasure card left so we race to get the last treasure dug up. We end up collecting White, which has 9 clue cards played on it. So we pull our necessary treasure cards and start to tally.

I count my cards up and I'm at 58. Not too bad I think to myself. Then as the wife is nearing the end of her counting I hear her mumble something about 20. Bing, I start glowing like a light bulb. I think to myself, "I crushed her. I kinda feel bad, but man, she got devastated." Then she looks up from her cards, "What's 54 plus 8?" Oh, my heart sinks and my head falls.

"62" I tell her.

I go on to relate the story of my elation at having momentarily crushed her in my mind. I lavish the story with some chest bumps and fist pumps. A little, "Oh snap. This chick's gonna cry." in the mocking self-deprecating way we have. She found it hilarious that I felt so proud to win but more so that I thought I did.

We kept the laughs rolling all night, mocking my momentary pride and adding little things I would have been saying to myself as she was finishing her counting.

We had a great time playing the game, and an even better time re-living it afterward. And that is what gaming is all about for me.

Postscript: I've now played a total of 11 games of Tobago. I haven't won a single one.

I have played this game A LOT. It's probably my favorite game. I've only lost one time. More accurately, I've won every single game but one. That one time was to a friend who is TERRIBLE at strategy games. In fact, she's pretty much terrible at ALL games. She even admits it herself. I don't know what happened. Worst of all, EVERYONE saw it.

It was bad. Very, very bad.

This is one of my games. As in I designed it. It is intended to be a family/gateway sort of a game, with a fair amount of luck on tile draws to go with the planing and scheming.

One of my daughters has beaten me every time we have played. Every single time. The only time I have managed to win a game was when she was not there.

My wife and I have been purchasing strategy games as family Christmas presents for years. They were always the last ones opened on Christmas day and many a Christmas afternoon was spent playing them. One Christmas when our youngest was eight, we broke out this little two player gem of connecting islands with bridges and getting a majority. My son wanted to play it, so away we went.

Now, I don't hold back against our kids when we play games, but I had a tough time seeing the interconnections and the cascading effect of taking island majorities. My son, however, had no such problem. The game is played over three rounds and by the second round, I knew I was in big trouble and struggled mightily to get any kind of advantage on any one of the islands. By the end of the third round, my son had dominated the board and I was left with a couple of bridges on one of the smaller islands. It was a crushing defeat and my wife found it amusing, to say the least. To this day our son (now 21) is very hard to beat at this game. He just gets it.

I was the owner and primary pusher of this game in college. I had a fairly regular group of core players and many others who drifted in for a game or two. I won probably about 40% of the games, which was pretty good.

But that doesn't mean I was immune to humbling and rapid falls from grace.

I was once wiped from the map before the end of turn 1. I played, left myself uncharacteristically open, and someone chose to spread themselves very thin for the pleasure of eliminating me before the first turn ended.

I was shocked and shamed. I spent the next three hours watching a four player five player game forlornly.

I played as the Union once during one of the Gettysburg scenarios. I held the strong Union defensive line, including Devil's Den. Historically this scenario trended very strongly toward a Union Victory.

I however, lost 6 to 1 or 6 to 0, as I was completely unable to pour any effective fire on the Confederate troops as they charged across the open ground. They inflicted far more casualties on my dug in troops from the open ground and routed my men upon becoming adjacent to my line.

I still remember the genuine and joyful mirth being expressed by my opponent as he rolled hits (crossed sabres and infantry) again and again. Then I would roll cavalry & artillery against infantry and get nary a hit.

Hall of Shame for sure. But it was memorable and still quite fun, and makes me smile to think about it.

Last month, I brought Finca to grandma's house to play it with my younger brother and sister. We have a 3p game before dinner. I lost by a small margin to my brother.

Post-dinner, my brother went out, and my little sister decide to invite grandma to play with us. She had never played any boardgames before, aside from some UNO. We played without using the special token, and I did not mention the 1-6 bonus tile.

Grandma ended up with 51, 1 point fewer than my sister. I got 36. Of course I was playing nice and all that, but I did not realize I had so few point.

Yeah, I could read the Keeper Objective before the game starts so I know how to *win* the game, but that would be *boring*. goo
