Round 3 was decided earlier than normal with the exception of Galaxy Trucker trying to hold on. What was most impressive was the number of "has-beens" that made a strong push in this round. It has been a long time since Memoir '44, Arkham Horror, and Caylus have been this far and doing well. In other news, El Grande exits before reaching the quarter-finals for the first time ever. Voting records continue to shatter as every pairing saw more votes than the 1,242 established last round. Welcome to the quarter-finals, where every game will finish with a title of some sort!

Voting Is Closed for This Round

01 Twilight Struggle vs. 09 Dominion / Dominion: Intrigue

Third Round: d. Battlestar Galactica 713-609
Second Round: d. Here I Stand 754-246
First Round: d. Acquire * 780-484

Comment: BSG took the lead early and kept it close throughout. But Twilight Struggle prevented it from reaching its final destination. Now TS faces a tough rematch from 2 years ago, where it almost made an early exit trying to defend its title.

Rematch: 2010 Quarter-Finals rematch. TS barely won with a final score of 528-525.

01 Twilight Struggle vs. 09 Dominion / Dominion: Intrigue

Third Round: d. Memoir '44 * 820-550
Second Round: d. Stone Age 691-543
First Round: d. Dungeon Lords 826-411

Comment: Dominion battled a resurging M44 that was set to retire this year and exited in the first round last year. Dominion has reacted to attacks from strong contenders and now looks to finish the upset it started 2 years ago. It also looks to break its 3-1 stagnation, the record it has had every year in the competition.

02 Agricola vs. 10 Caylus

Third Round: d. War of the Ring (& Collector's Edition) 828-557
Second Round: d. Crokinole 833-378
First Round: d. Carcassonne * 819-617

Comment: The Gric has been fairly quiet in its quest to retain the title. It put the fan-favorite Carcassonne out to pasture, and survived an onslaught from the forces of Sauron. It will be interesting to see how it faces its worker placement forefather that has found new life.

02 Agricola vs. 10 Caylus

Third Round: d. Galaxy Trucker * 642-636
Second Round: d. Twilight Imperium 622-449
First Round: d. Blood Bowl: Living RuleBook 757-312

Comment: Caylus has been the surprise of the tourney. It has been the trendy high-ranking casualty in the early rounds in previous years. But it has accumulated its best record since it apparently peaked in 2007, just edging past GT.

03 Puerto Rico (& Limited Anniversary Edition) vs. 11 7 Wonders

Third Round: d. Small World 931-470
Second Round: d. Troyes 838-352
First Round: d. The Settlers of Catan * 880-492

Comment: PR is riding a high in its anniversary year. It has consistently ended each round this year with the title garnering the most votes. And this despite facing some fan-favorites. This may be the year it reclaims its title last seen in 2005.

03 Puerto Rico (& Limited Anniversary Edition) vs. 11 7 Wonders

Third Round: d. Arkham Horror * 832-543
Second Round: d. The Princes of Florence 734-423
First Round: d. Ticket to Ride (Entire Series) 711-680

Comment: This has been the sophomore of the year, the only 1st or 2nd year to continue into the 2012 Quarter-Finals. It has been no stranger to fierce competition and has lasted for 3 ages. It now faces its toughest match up. A moral victory could be found in preventing PR from gaining the single most votes this round.

36 Pandemic vs. 05 Power Grid

Third Round: d. El Grande 733-628
Second Round: d. Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization 631-611
First Round: d. Ora et Labora 702-349

Comment: El Grande misses a title for the first time in its career, having never exited lower than a quarter-finalist. Pandemic forces sick leave upon the perennial contender. Now it faces the one that sent it home last year.

Rematch: 2011 2nd Round rematch. PG easily beat Pandemic 516-381

36 Pandemic vs. 05 Power Grid

Third Round: d. Race for the Galaxy 744-687
Second Round: d. Sid Meier's Civilization: The Board Game 832-372
First Round: d. Dixit * 867-418

Comment: PG continues to rack up the votes but appears to be slowing down as the Madness continues. Now it faces a rematch with a team that is the only survivor from the bottom halves of the bracket. Will Pandemic send PG back to 2005, the last time it saw the Quarter-finals as its high water mark?
