Has there been a game that you've bought without having any expectations at all and found it to be a winner? A pleasant surprise.

(This is the counterpart to the Noooooooooo thread, and stolen form someone else)

KN own about this for a while and allways thought, this looks so shit. Anyway A while back I started to run a post apocalypse RPG and used 15mm figures. Saw this in a charity shop sometime after for A%1.50 and said to my self 'I may have use for the vehicles' and baught it.

It's tends out to be a very popular club night game and has prooved a great investment.

This would be my most recent eye opener. I never had a chance to play Acquire until recently when a new gaming friend of mine brought it up a few times and I finally acquiesced. So glad I did, what a great game! I now am the owner of a good condition 1963 copy of the game via eBay. Best part: My wife loves it too!

While by no means poorly ranked, Loyang seems to get a bad rap from those who love its siblings. Something of a disappointment I guess. I picked up Loyang on the cheap and ended up loving it.

I bought this mainly for the theme, because I was an avid reader of the literary series in the 80s. It turned out to be much better than I expected and eventually became my favorite and most played two-player game.

I bought the pdf off of RPGNow mostly cause it was cheap, lovely graphics, & I thought it was a different game. It took me a while before I made this one up. Then we played it, wow what a fun game. Even my husband liked it & he doesn't much care for card games. I've already made 2 copies, 1 for me & 1 for my daughter. I'm thinking of buying a physical copy of the game as my mother would like a copy as well. It's our most played game at this time, yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees!

My wife tossed this on an order that we were making and I had no expectations that this game would be any good. But, turns out it is really a rather good game. I think it will play best with 2, though I have not played it with any more than that.

So I am glad my wife snagged this one. It is quick to play and makes a really good game when we do not have much time.

I bought this game prior to joining BoardGameGeek last year. At the time, the only wargames I'd been exposed too were several Risk variants and the Axis & Allies series. I did hear about this game when it was originally announced, but I didn't preorder it, because I wasn't sure I'd like it.

A few months later, I saw it in my local game store. I reconsidered getting it, and while I still wasn't sure how much I'd like it, I bought it.

It took me awhile to get around to playing it, but when I did, I found I really liked the game's mechanics.

Since joining BoardGameGeek, though my purchases have been primarily Ameritrash and Euro's, my experience with Battle Cry compelled me to look into the other Commands & Colors games. I know I definitely want to try Battlelore and C&C Ancients. I'll probably want to try the mechanics of the new Abaddon. In all likely hood, I'll probably be wanting Memior '44 and Napoleonics as well.

That's not to say I don't want to try other wargames. There are other wargame systems I'm interested in trying, particularly block wargames. The Commands & Colors system however, was simple and elegant enough to build up my interest in wargames to the point where it is today, and try branching out from the systems I'd stuck to before.

This game surprised me after getting lots of flack for lack of cards. Being able to pummel each other and having events to deal with make up for that fact. It's never really an issue. Not a WOW! game, but one that gets played and enjoyed a lot.

Runner up is Test of Fire: Bull Run 1861 which is also has "limited" replay issues according to many, but is a fantastically fun light war game I can play with my 8 year old.

This game would be my choice for going into a game with little/no expectations and walking out quite impressed. I'll admit, my first 2 player game of this was pretty "meh". Giving it a go a few months later, I tried again with 2 players. Something clicked with me and this game, but I knew I wanted more. Checked out the 2 player variants since I felt this game lacked a lot of tension with only 2 people competing for boroughs. 2 simple fixes changed this game from a 6 to an 8. And with more plays, I may even bump this up again. It's really been growing on me.

My second choice for a game I went into with little/no expectations was Innovation. Holy crap do I love this game. It gets a bit too chaotic with 4, but I've REALLY enjoyed every play of this game so far. Card artwork is pretty drab, but the fun plays and memorable games it's created has me reaching for this game more and more. Easily one of my favorite games I've discovered since boardgaming.

I picked up this game for a few bucks. I knew nothing about it, other than it was cheap! It's surprisingly good for how simple it is. 100% player interaction and a nice balance between screwing over your opponents and helping them out. My game group uses this game as a filler whenever we're waiting for more people to arrive or another game to finish when we play multiple games at a time.

Got this in a math trade as part of a group of games I didn't look at much. (Too many checkboxes!!)

I thought it was going to be a quick and simple game, but it's really deep. What I really love about it is that all 4 of the cube colors actually do different things. Black (soldiers) are used to man your city walls and fight off periodic invasions. Yellow (gold) can be used to bid on the best available projects, or to buy soldiers (at 2:1). White (craftsmen) can be used to take additional building actions. Brown (pilgrims) can be used to move to new projects if you are outbid, or to trade for other resources (at 2:1).

Also, each player gets a slightly different base income and slightly different starting resources. So, sometimes you'll be better off pursuing a building strategy.

Urban Sprawl was a wonderful surprise for me. I've had it on my wishlist for quite a while and finally traded for it. While waiting for it to arrive, I started re-reading its Geekpage to re-familiarize myself with it.

The Geekpage scared me a bit because it seemed to be nothing but bitching about how chaotic the game is. What was I thinking? Did I really put this on my Wishlist just because I liked Dominant Species and this one was by the same designer? Idiot!

Nope, after playing Urban Sprawl a couple of times, I realized that I was still brilliant. It's a totally awesome game full of tough choices and opponent-hosing opportunities. All that crap about the game's chaos was just that--CRAP! After playing and loving Urban Sprawl, I had the feeling that the chaos-haters were people who were failing to give the game a decent chance. They were screwed over by an unexpected Event Card or two and wrote the game off as chaotic.

Well, after a couple of games, you will learn the cards and their effects, and then it's just amazing how that chaos just disappears. Urban Sprawl is awesome for two or three players; I haven't had a chance for a four-player game yet, but expect great things there, too.

I picked this up because I thought it might be a nice family game.It is!

It's also pretty challenging. The game can be played with some easy rules, some medium advanced rules, or with the full complex rules. You play the game in 3 rounds, so you could even have 1 easy round, 1 advanced round, and one complex round.

A bunch of tiles with pictures of land, water, and animals get dumped on the table. Set up the player"world mats" in front of you. You set the timer for a few minutes and then you and your gaming partners have to race against time and each other to build the best "world" according to whatever rules you are using. People are building, scavenging thru the pile for the best pieces, all while the timer is counting down. It's really quite fun! It's not the most advanced strategic game in the world, but you only play 3 rounds of 7 minutes or less per round. So it's over in less than 30 minutes, start to finish. No huge set up, no mess to clean up. No hour long rules explanation.

Set it up, play, laugh, and have a good old time.

Don't really know what to expect when I bought it. A party game with hidden roles. Ok, I have seen this before.

But when I played it... AWESOME! It is fun, there is threats, negociation, bluffs, you name it.

Always a hit, no matter the group of players. I actually sell mine copy to a friend that really wanted it.

Then I bought a new one for me. It is that good.

My mate is usually the one to blindly buy a good game.

As for Drakon, my first game was with my non-gamer girlfriend and she didn't like it at all, so it got stuffed on the shelf for several months before I took it to the games club.

Drakon played with GAMERS. OH YES! It's brilliant. A pickup up and play dungeon crawl where everyone is out for themselves. Still just a bit of a filler game but it can be great fun.
