After the modest success of my previous Geeklist "2011 is looking good!", I decided to continue the tradition into 2012 with a new list. It is still early so there aren't too many games to add right now but, as time progresses, more titles will be added. Just like in the previous Geeklist, feel free to submit games you are looking forward to in 2012. Also, if you enjoyed reading this, please thumb!

Previous list:

Now, let's get started, shall we?

Had a chance to demo this this semi co-op game at The Gama Trade Show. I like the role of destroying Middle Earth rather than saving the ring, etc...Also being Nazgul you can backstab each other as well.

A game set in the Forgotten Realms with the spirit of a euro? Yes, please. In Lords of Waterdeep, you are a Lord who is trying to achieve power through agent manipulations. You send adventurers on quests, trying to gain influence over Waterdeep. If you have read any of the Forgotten Realms fiction, you should really enjoy the theme of this game.

From the BGG description: "In Lords of Waterdeep, a strategy board game for 2-5 players, you take on the role of one of the masked Lords of Waterdeep, secret rulers of the city. Through your agents, you recruit adventurers to go on quests on your behalf, earning rewards and increasing your influence over the city. Expand the city by purchasing new buildings that open up new actions on the board, and hinder or help the other lords by playing Intrigue cards to enact your carefully laid plans."

Lords of Waterdeep plays 2-5 players in about 1 hour.

Perhaps a deeper, meatier Summoner Wars: Master Set style game? To me, it looks awesome, especially because each player gets an actual spell book to hold the spells he/she will use for the game.

If this is coming out, I am excited for it. I don't even care who releases it at this point. Both Stronghold and FFG are completely capable of releasing a great rendition of Merchant of Venus. Only time will tell what happens to this great game.

From the BGG description: "Merchant of Venus uses many elements which come together to form a very interesting game. Players take on the roles of space traders who move their ships through interconnected systems discovering new alien worlds to trade with. As players start to make money delivering commodities in a unique supply-and-demand system, their earnings can be used to purchase better ships and equipment (shields, lasers, engines, etc...) and construct their own spaceports (which speed up trading) and factories (which create better commodities). Variations included in the rulebook allow for interplayer combat. The player who first acquires enough total value ($1000, $2000, $3000, $4000) in cash and port/factory deeds takes the day."

Looks like another video game licensed boardgame. This will see a 2012 release in Europe (specifically Poland, I think) but not sure about the rest of the world.

From the BGG description: "MIGHT & MAGIC HEROES:The Boardgame

The world of Heroes needs no introduction: six parts of this legendary game conquered hearts of players worldwide. This November Axel publishing house will release a board game version of this immensely popular title.

In this strategy game with elements of adventure will be based on the newest installation of the series: Might & Magic Heroes 6. The players will gain control over four factions (Haven, Stronghold, Necropolis and Sanctuary) and fight for the crown of the eastern part of the Empire: The Griffin Duchy.

The game will feature an modular board to create unique map each play, and hoard of card picturing heroes, spells, magic artifacts skills and treasures. Also, cardboard tokens for armies and creatures that appear on the board to hinder player’s conquest and exploration. Of course, the game won’t lack wooden components: pawns for heroes and castles.

Each player will develop his capital, recruit heroes and send armies to gain control over the largest part of the Duchy. With the proper amount of victory points she will secure the crown for herself!"

Might & Magic Heroes plays 2-4 in 150 minutes.

Wow, loving the art of this game. This is currently on Kickstarter but it looks safe to say it will be funded. The description below sounds really interesting with loads of replayability potential.

From the BGG description: "Taking cues from boardgames such as Twilight Imperium and Cosmic Encounter, Nova Cry lets players customize and tailor their gameplay experience so that each game highlights a new facet of the Nova Cry universe. Gameplay centers around the six cards that each player chooses as their beginning task force, consisting of one captain card (from 15), one ship card (from 15), three crew members (from 12), and one personal weapon (from 7). These six choices will remain with that player for the rest of the game and will greatly affect their strategic choices."

Nova Cry plays 2-6 in an hour.

I just read about Nuklear Winter '68 today but it looks promising. I see this game can be played solo but a description of how the game plays is not available or I am just missing it.

From the BGG description: "The former German territory, transformed into a wasteland by the nuclear holocaust that ended the Second World War in 1946, is the hostile setting of a new conflict between old enemies clenched in a struggle for the future of mankind.

Surviving Nazi leaders and Wehrmacht forces resurface in 1968 from underground shelters to rebuild an empire from the ashes of the world. Oblivious of the climatic, technological and political changes inflicted by more than 20 years of nuclear winter, they are about to face the mysterious Black Hand - elusive, abhorrent masters of the wastes, and the combined might of the modern, highly mechanized and versatile NATO alliance.

Units represent platoons of vehicles like T64 or King Tiger tanks, infantry, or helicopters. The platoons are grouped into formations and lead by a commander. The formations are activated by chit draw, and better-trained, better-led units can activate more than once in a turn, moving, shooting, and fighting in each activation. On the flip side of a coin, there is no guarantee that a formation will activate even once."

Nuklear Winter '68 plays 1-3 in about an hour.

Another one from GMT that I am looking forward to. Hopefully it makes it out by the end of the year. Another block game. This one about the Great Northern War of 1700.
Three Kings conspire to once and for all break the Swedish dominance in the Baltic. Charles the XII of Sweden decides to attack and soon the Alliance against him begins to crack. A 21 year long bitter war has just begun which eventually ends an empire and sees another one rising…
Interesting subject matter that I confess I do not know much about but which has raised my curiosity.

I've been trying to cut back on 2 player abstracts I know I won't get to play (my wife generally doesn't like them and I rarely play two player at game night...) but Rise! had too much I like in it not to kickstart! A board which changes and expands through play, variable board setups, pieces with multiple purposes, multiple win conditions (build towers or wipe out your opponent I think are the only ones). It looks like a great pick up for folks that enjoy 2 player abstracts!

Another co-op survival game with "Crusoe" in the title. Interesting. This one is from the designer of Stronghold and promises to change the way we think about co-op games. You have my attention...

From the BGG description: "Robinson Crusoe: Adventure on the Cursed Island is not only a thrilling story perfectly combined with its game mechanisms; it's also designed to change the co-operative genre by doing away with the major nuisances of cooperative games: the "leader issue" and the "dumb player issue". It's a cooperative game in which the problem of a single player deciding for the rest of the participants does not exist, the game that reacts in an exciting way to all of the players' actions."

Robinson Crusoe plays 1-5 players in 2 hours.

Not sure if this will make it out by 2012, but it looks nice. Cheers for more nautical themes!

From the BGG description: "Sails to Steam is a game for 2-5 players. Each player takes charge of a different empire to lead to economic prosperity.

Starting with a small fleet comprised of a few meager sailboats and a canoe, players will build boats, settle colonies, and even found new countries, in an effort to spread the influence of their mighty empire.

As their influence and power expands, players must carefully gauge and react to the global economy created by their fellow players, and attempt to leverage their advantages to push out other empires if they plan to become the mightiest empire."

Another game in the Command & Colours Line from Richard Borg...but that is not entirely true. This is actually a collaborative project that comes from the Art of Tactic Series (Of which I know nothing) and Borg got involved to develop a C&C game using the same minis too.

That's two games for your money in the one box and being a huge Memoir, Battlelore fan, the combination of C&C and the Samurai theme with what look like amazing minis can only be a winner.

Do I need more C&C having the above two formats plus Ancients...NO.

Do I need this...YES!

I have a mental image of Leonardo Dicaprio wandering the halls of a creepy, old sanitarium, trying to find just the right card from his decks to escape the winding halls. This game could be cool and it also allows for solo play. This is a card-driven horror game where your characters are trying to escape the sanitarium before time is up!

From the BGG description: "Sanitarium is a card-driven horror escape game. At the start of the game, each player is dealt three (of 13) 'Safe Things' cards. Finding those specific items will allow escape from the Sanitarium.

The cards form the map of the winding hallways, items scattered all over. Players must explore the layout (which will differ with each play) to find items that provide them useful powers, and also their Safe Things. Dark Hallways within the Sanitarium will spawn shadows, which will in turn chase the players. Getting caught by a shadow might earn you a hallucination. Hallucinations...are bad.

The enemy of the players is time. The deck of item and event cards is the timer for the game -- when it runs out, everyone still inside succumbs to their madness!"

Sanitarium plays 1-4 in about 30 minutes.
