After the modest success of my previous Geeklist "2011 is looking good!", I decided to continue the tradition into 2012 with a new list. It is still early so there aren't too many games to add right now but, as time progresses, more titles will be added. Just like in the previous Geeklist, feel free to submit games you are looking forward to in 2012. Also, if you enjoyed reading this, please thumb!

Previous list:

Coming from Z-man Games by the end of 2012 for the US gamers. Looks like a solid civilization game where you can combine lots of different cultural aspects into one unique culture. Here's to hoping the 2P experience is solid.

Also, has multiple paths to victory:

"Earn points for:
- The number of cities and their sizes
- Your Culture Level (things that will remain long after your civilization is gone)
- Your Happiness Level
- Objectives (Military and Civic)"

Plays 2-4 players in 180 minutes.

This basically looks like a video game in a box with cardboard components, which is pretty much awesome. EVERYTHING here is modular: the difficulty, the teams, the missions, et cetera. Also, it supports campaign play! This game could be amazing and I look forward to some session reports.

From the BGG description: "Countdown: Special Ops will have you searching for bombs at public places such as airports and train stations, or finding terrorist cells in cellars or in ghettos, at warehouses or at the harbor. When the sky grows dark, finding the bombs and getting home safely becomes more and more difficult.

Countdown is fully modular, with players being able to create their own game, adjust the level of difficulty (with different players playing on different levels), create and develop their own special ops teams, play single missions or entire campaigns in which the characters level up, and adopt the game format that works best for your group: cooperative, competitive, team against team, or paranoia (with a traitor in hiding amongst the team).

Heavy developing possibilities in the special ops are being created, in which way the players can combine the different team members who are best fit to make a raid at a specific location."

Countdown: Special Ops plays 1-6 players in half an hour.

Honestly, I know very little about this game. I know that it looks beautiful and that it has a scientific theme, which is quite unique. It also seems to be play 2 players. I will keep my eye on this one. If anyone has any additional info on this, please feel free to post in this Geeklist.

From the BGG description: "In the first half of the game, players will try to stop the increase of pollution by building green power plants, and maintaining sustainable energy growth. If however they are unable to do so, responsibility will fall on the Companies with most expertise in each particular field of clean, sustainable energy, since modern society cannot survive without energy. In the end, whoever controls a specific technology will be the one responsible for its delivery to the various regions. That control brings money and advantages to the Company, but also responsibilities. If the pollution cannot be stopped, companies will suffer the consequences."

CO2 plays 2-4 players in 1.5 hours.

This is on the top of my "wish list" for 2012. Surely a candidate for the definitive game on this struggle.

"CRUSADE AND REVOLUTION" (C&R) is a card-driven point-to-point movement strategic wargame that covers all the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). Its rules are based on Ted Raicer’s "Paths of Glory".

Each player takes command of one of the sides (Nationalist or Republican), and looks after all the aspects that involve a war: mobilization, recruitment, movement of troops, offensives, construction of defences… There are also historical events that must be taken into consideration, as the foreign military aid, international policy, change of Republican Government, etc.

The game is available for PRE-ORDER now: http://www.multimanpublishing.com/tabid/59/ProductID/95/Defa...

Ugh, I feel sick knowing I missed the Kickstarter on this. All those tasty extras...gulp Solo play is available, which is always a nice bonus. I love the way the mission maps are laid out, allowing for various paths to victory. Anyone want to sell their Line for Life?

From the BGG description: "D-Day Dice is a multiplayer co-op game, where all players play their turn simultaneously and must help each other in order to stay alive. It also includes solitaire optional rules. Although built around dice rolling, this game is about resource management (soldiers, specialists, items and courage) and knowing when to move your unit. Resources are kept from turn to turn, so the players can plan ahead."

D-Day Dice plays 1-4 in about 30 minutes.

I really hope this game comes out in 2012. I had it on last year's list and it just looks too cool to pass up.

From the BGG description: "Dark Darker Darkest is a cooperative horror game in which a team of urban survivors try to fight the darkness in an unsettling location: the house of Doctor Mortimer, which holds the antidote to a virus turning the world into an army of undead.

Players must gather tools to open doors, control destructive fires that slowly destroy the locations of the game, and battle the endless hordes of terrifying creatures that will do anything to slaughter this fragile group, while outsneaking lurking creatures and the eye of the ever-present security cameras guarding the secrets of the house."

Dark Darker Darkest plays 2-5 players in about 2 hours.

It's more Descent. Depending on who you are, that is either a good thing or a bad thing. To me, it could be either. I really don't have anyone to play this game with but I love the idea of the game system. The time it takes to play First Edition is just too long, which is supposedly something they are fixing in this new Edition. I am not really sure what other changes are coming about in Second Edition but I will keep an eye on this. If this has a campaign system, I will probably pick it up.

From the BGG description: "Descent: Journeys in the Dark (Second Edition) is a board game in which one player takes on the role of the treacherous overlord, and up to four other players take on the roles of courageous heroes. During each game, the heroes embark on quests and venture into dangerous caves, ancient ruins, dark dungeons, and cursed forests to battle monsters, earn riches, and attempt to stop the overlord from carrying out his vile plot."

The theme doesn't really appeal to me but it might interest some.

From the BGG description: "Divided Republic is a card driven two to four player game representing the last calm before the storm that was to become the American Civil War. Players represent the four major parties (Constitutional Unionists, Northern Democrats, Republicans, and Southern Democrats) and attempt to win the presidency by defeating their opponents with dirty tricks, platform speeches, and the manipulation of key historical events. All the while, President Buchanan interferes, radicals riot, and the country continues the downward spiral toward civil war. If one party wins the election by achieving the necessary 152+ electoral votes, or wins in the case of an electoral tie thrown to the US Congress, history may well change. Nevertheless, there is always the chance that the population of South Carolina will finally explode into open rebellion and secede, ending the game, at which point everyone loses!"

Divided Republic plays 2-4 in about 3 hours.

I just heard about this upcoming game from AEG. It seems that AEG has more titles taking place in the city-state of Tempest and Dominare is one of them. In Dominare, you are the person behind the scenes, pulling the strings in order to gain control of Tempest. It sounds cool and looks cooler, so keep an eye on for this one.

From the BGG description: "In Dominare, you are the puppet master of a conspiracy seeking to control Tempest. Agents are the key to Dominare. Use your agents to spread your influence through the city, building a network of hidden power to control the most valuable districts and blocks.

In the game, players first draft agents they want. Then, each turn, the players reveal one additional layer of their conspiracy. Each agent is a unique person in the City-State of Tempest, with unique abilities. The higher an agent in in your conspiracy, the more powerful that agent is."

Dominare plays 2-6 in about 2 hours.

As of today, Edo has been funded via Kickstarter. I have to admit, the thing that drew me to this game was the game board, which looks very sharp. Edo uses a Simultaneous Action Selection similar to Wallenstein, so if you are keen on that mechanic, you may want to take a peek at Edo. One thing of note is that the game comes with two boards, one for a 2-3 player game and another for a 4 player game. Neat!

From the BGG description: "Each turn, the players simultaneously choose which actions they want to take with their three cards and in which order, programming those actions on their player cards, similar to the planning phase in Dirk Henn's Wallenstein and Shogun. Players then take actions in turn order, moving samurai on the board as needed (paying $1 per space moved) in order to complete actions (to the forest for wood, the rice fields for rice, cities to build, and so on). Before a player can move samurai, however, he must use an action to place them on the game board; some actions allow free movement, and others allow a player to recruit additional samurai beyond the initial five."

Edo plays 2-4 in about an hour.

Why, oh why, did I miss the Kickstarter campaign on this? The art is just so...incredible. Not sure my wife would join in for a game but I could always buy it and wait for kids to come along so they would play it with me, right? ninja

From the BGG description: "In Empires of the Void, two to four players compete to expand their empire in a vast, diverse galaxy. Each time a player reaches a new planet, he must decide whether to conquer it and strip the land of its resources, or befriend the natives and obtain their special ability. With 7 starting alien races to choose from, and 15 more to conquer or befriend on a variable board, no two games will be the same.

The game uses an action point system and exciting dice-rolling combat with plenty of tactical decision making (similar to Nexus Ops). There are 19 technologies to research that break the rules and change gameplay. Players must use negotiation and trade, even when it is not their turn, which ensures that there is very little downtime. A random event deck helps build the story of the game, as each round something new happens, usually galaxy-wide. A game lasts around 2 to 3 hours and has intuitive rules which are easy to teach."

Another title from Queen Games that is fully funded (this one is like 350% funded) that I am looking forward to. In Escape, players play simultaneously and in real-time in order to try to escape a temple before the whole thing collapses on them. Escape features a soundtrack to govern the real-time play.

From the BGG description: "Escape is played in real-time, with all players rolling dice and taking actions simultaneously. You must roll the right symbols to enter a room, and if you're at an open doorway, you can roll to reveal the next tile in the stack and add it to that doorway. Some rooms contain treasure, and when you reveal such a room, you place a face-down treasure chest on the tile. Roll the symbols on that chest tile, and you claim the treasure for use later: a key lets you teleport anywhere, a path lets you connect two rooms that otherwise have no door between them, and a medic kit heals all players instantly (putting black dice back into play)."

Escape plays 1-5 players in about 10 minutes.

Apparently this is a video game to board game deal like Uncharted, although I have never even heard of Farmerama. BUT! It is designed Uwe Rosenberg. My interest is piqued...

From the BGG description: "Based on the popular videogame and designed by Uwe Rosenberg, players use action cards to sow and harvest crops (carrots, hay, oats, corn) to feed their livestock (sheep, pigs, cow, horse) and earn victory points. On each player's board, a rotating wheel indicates where and when actions can take place, and another central wheel that affects all players indicates what yields they can expect. These wheels change over time, creating constantly shifting situations that players must navigate."

Farmerama plays 1-4 in a about an hour.
