After the modest success of my previous Geeklist "2011 is looking good!", I decided to continue the tradition into 2012 with a new list. It is still early so there aren't too many games to add right now but, as time progresses, more titles will be added. Just like in the previous Geeklist, feel free to submit games you are looking forward to in 2012. Also, if you enjoyed reading this, please thumb!

Previous list:

Now, let's get started, shall we?

A new game from Academy Games. Players take on one of the roles of the major factions that took part in the War of 1812. On the British side these are represented by the British Regulars (Redcoats), Canadian Militia and Native Americans; and the American Regular Army and American Militia comprise the American players. Players for each side will cooperate with each other in order to plan and conduct their campaigns. Each side will attempt to capture Objective Areas on the map. When a truce is called, the side that controls the most enemy Objective Areas wins.

Staled to ship later this month, 1989 is GMT's newest card driven game, centered around the internal revolution of the USSR. I have high hopes for what feels like a reflection and evolution of Twilight Struggle. Whether it surpasses the greatness of the original ... only time will tell.

"1989: Dawn of Freedom is an exciting, fast paced game simulating the end of the Cold War in 1989. During this amazing year, a series of democratic revolutions ended the 40 year Soviet empire in Eastern Europe. 1989 simulates the political, social and economic aspects of these revolutions using a card-driven system similar to Twilight Struggle.

One player plays the Communist. At the start of the game he holds unquestioned power across the six nations of the Warsaw Pact. But there are ominous clouds on the horizon. The new leader in Moscow has declared no more will Soviet tanks prop up tottering Communist governments. The economies, after decades of central planning and stagnation, have reached various stages of crisis. Inside the churches and among the students and their professors there are dissident movements that have been emboldened. From crushing dissent to offering concessions, the Communist player will have to use a variety of strategies in a struggle to hold on to his empire.

The other player plays the Democrat. At the dawn of 1989, behind the iron curtain, no one considers revolution possible. The goal of dissidents is to create a civil society outside the control of the Communist regimes. On their side are students who are fascinated with the style and pop culture of the west, and the Church. Against them is the vast apparatus of the Communist state. Their challenge is to persuade the workers, who are the bulk of society, to join their cause."

More storytelling games? Yes...

From the BGG description: "The year is 1941. Within 8 months, the United States will join in the war raging in Europe and brewing in the Pacific. However for the moment, the lives of most Americans continue in relative peace…unless you live in the City by the Bay.

In San Francisco... crimes, mysteries, and good old fashioned murder present unique challenges to detectives and residents alike - especially if you happen to be a detective investigating a dirty backroom deal inside a Neon lit nightclub, or a future criminal plotting against a spouse under a flickering streetlamp. It is up to you, the players, to create the story.

Ace Detective is a StoryTelling Card Game that rewards imagination and the turn of a good tale. Play your cards right, tell your story, and be rewarded the Plot Points needed to place clues on the suspects of the crime. But be careful. Everyone in this gritty city is competing to tell his/her own story..."

We need more storytelling boardgames ala Tales of the Arabian Nights. This game seems to have LOADS of scenarios and adventures built in, especially if you get the optional encounters book that comes with the base game. Also, it can be played solo! Excellent...

From the BGG description: "Agents of SMERSH is a cooperative Storytelling game that pits players as UN Secret Service Spies set in an alternate 1970s timeline against a newly formed and independent SMERSH. The game will be able to accommodate play with either The Encounter Book that contains over 1500 written encounters with a similar reaction matrix to Tales of the Arabian Nights - or played more simply with only encounter cards with shorter encounters and no matrix. Agents of SMERSH includes custom dice to determine success or failure of encounters, and more strategic play from what is typically expected of a Storytelling board game. There are plenty of James Bond gadgets, guns, cars, pop references and detailed artwork - not to mention a touch of humor. The game features the artwork of George Patsouras (The Resistance & Flash Point)."

This one is on Indiegogo right now but it looks like it will be funded. I don't know much about this game yet.

From the BGG description: "After a devastating war, peace is declared among all the major races of the galaxy and an Alliance is created.

One of the first decisions of the Alliance, is to build space stations all along the galaxy in order to promote trade among the races, strengthen diplomatic relations and help keep the newly established peace.

Each player takes the role of one of those races, trying to build the best space station.

The players, using a drafting mechanism, select location cards and place them on their station. According to where they place them they score victory points. The construction lasts 4 years and whoever has the most points in the end wins."

Among the Stars plays 2-4 in 30 minutes.

For some reason, I totally dig nautical-based board games. I would love to see more of them. Anchorage piqued my interest because I love Alaska and I love shipping. Plus, a modular board setup ensures extended replayability. Keep an eye on this one!

From the BGG description: "Take the helm of a small shipping company, deliver valuable cargo and out-sell your opponents! You face an exciting challenge to bring your fledgling company up to speed with the changing demands across the region. Anchorage is a fast moving strategy game where you build factories, create high-speed shipping routes and devise tactics to make sure you deliver the most valuable cargo. Steer your merchant ship to take advantage of the high tides, and weather the impact of the low tides in order to prevail. The region can only support one company in the long term so you have a lot to prove! No game of Anchorage is the ever the same, due to the interchangeable tiles which allow different game-board layouts and the ever-changing demands of the ports."

GMT is publishing a remake of this, arguably the greatest super-battalion Bulge game ever. The remake will have two full sized maps (instead of one full + one half-size), and will be expanded to include the American counterattack (for those who aren't content with simply stopping the Germans before the Meuse). Of course, if the Germans beat history and win the game outright, the counter attack won't materialize.

Not this game, but Operation Crusader and Venezia (these two titles are not yet on BGG's list of games).

These will be battalion level, and I'm looking forward to Chris Fasulo's treatment of battle at this level.

Chris' output is tremendous, and despite many other games he has on his list, these two (or at least Crusader) are very likely to be produced on schedule, towards the end of the summer.

I love co-op games. I actually had Atlantis Rising on last year's list but it never saw the light of day. Z-man is supposed to be releasing this in NA sometime in 2012. The art looks stellar and I hope the gameplay mechanics require teamwork to achieve victory.

From the BGG description: "In Atlantis Rising you portray one of the leading citizens of Atlantis on the eve of its destruction. You must work together with the other players to construct a cosmic gate capable of transporting the remainder of the island to safety, before your civilization is lost forever to the sea.

Each turn you and the other players will choose where to send your followers: the closer to the sea, the greater the potential reward, but also the greater the risk! Next, you draw misfortunes - which may eliminate the section(s) of the island to which you chose to send your followers. Finally, you reap the benefits of your selection, if it is still above water. Afterward, the Athenians attack, hoping to plunder the island before it sinks beneath the waves. Finally, you may build a component of the cosmic gate if you have the correct combination of resources."

Atlantis Rising plays 2-6 players in 1 hour.

This is a game I've been really looking forward to!

In 1982, Mexico's economy collapsed, and the government's response was to centralize the banks and devalue the peso. (This much, at least, is true...)

In the game world of Banditos, the Mexican people responded poorly to these changes, resulting in a decrease in effective security and an increase in creative accounting at the new Banco de Mexico. Once some of the "alternatively principled" people in the land of opportunity heard about this, they looked south of the border for their ventures.

You will play one of several American characters making runs into Mexico to pull bank heists. You will need to acquire vehicles, weapons, seed money, and maybe even some inside information to make it all happen.

The first player to get his character home with the equivalent of one million US dollars wins.

Players can acquire cards (vehicles etc.) by drawing them each turn, by buying them from other players, or by stealing them from the discard pile.

Doing anything deemed illegal, however, will bring "heat" to your character (if you steal from the discard pile or pull a heist,) or your vehicle (if you steal gas or pull a heist,) or Mexican cities (if you pull a heist.)
It's up to you as a player to manage your risk and decide how desperate you are to acquire what you need versus how much heat you currently have.

If you have the guts to try a risky heist, it'll either pay off or you'll land in a Mexican jail and have to play catch-up.

Please come out this year, Crusoe. In this semi-cooperative game, players must survive the wild together initially but only one player can actually win. I love survival themes and TV shows (see: Out of the Wild and Survivor) so I could definitely seem myself digging this. Also, solo play appears possible!

From the BGG description: "Crusoe, previously self-published under the title Náufragos ("Castaways"), is a semi-cooperative game about four castaways who are stranded on an island. They must cooperate to improve their shelter, gather food to eat and wood to keep the campfire burning, and figure out how to escape from the island, among other tasks but only one player will win, that being the one who writes the best story at the end of the game, the one who lives and retells the greatest adventure from all the survivors."

Crusoe plays 1-4 players in 2 hours.

I love almost all games, play Boardgames with my wife, have three kids, generally enjoy cats and understand and like those bumper stickers with the little fishies sprouting legs.

A political ladder climbing game rife with bribery, treachery, murder and... chickens! The voting mechanism in this certainly seems pretty unique and I think it will be a huge hit in groups that enjoy backstabbery... like mine! I think this is my most anticipated title of 2012... so far.

Plays 3-6 in about 90 minutes.
