I, like I assume many of you here, began my journey diving into the depths of BGG by watching a pleasant, friendly, articulate man with a beard (and sometimes a costume) explain a board game in video form.

With all of these fantastic video reviewers doing their thing here on BGG, it occurred to me that it might be nice to hear stories about the godfather of all board game video reviewers.

I would love this geeklist to be a collection of stories about how you first came to "know" Scott...the first video of his that you saw, your favorite video of his, if you've ever had the pleasure of playing with him....anything!

Thanks for everything you've done and continue to do Scott!!!

My first glimpse of the larger gaming culture was Scott's video review of Power Grid 6 years ago. I was not even aware of Boardgamegeek at the time. Thank you so much Scott for the years of entertainment and thoughtful advice. It is hard to imagine the hobby without your influence.

I love many of Scott videos, specially the latest where he spoke more about game mechanics than a particular game.

But if I have to chose one it will be his great video about "Poker Chips" It helped me twice: to chose the right set for a friend and to help me to buy my optimum 18XX money set.

Found a nice Mahjong set for $5 at a thrift store.

Never having played + Engrish instructions left us feeling very confused. No other written instructions seemed to be much help.

Scott's review/instructions, plus printable play guide, cut through the confusion so we could enjoy the treasure we had found.

Board games rule my life, and my wife's. That is a good thing, believe it or not ;)

Though I have one entry already on the list, I just wanted to mention this particular game because it worked exactly as advertised by Scott. It fills a niche where it does really well. I generally don't care much for real "party" games, but this and other of his recommendations do manage to work very well without feeling too simple.

Like many of you, I too started learning about “real” board games beside the ordinary games like Monopoly, Risk etc. after watching Scott’s videos less than a year ago. Every time I hear the introduction music I think back of the good ol’ days/weeks when I watched almost every single one of his videos. Those videos are one of the main reasons I started playing and buying board games - and why I today own 300+ games...

I obviously don’t know Scott personally, but I could imagine that he’s as friendly as he sounds, looks and acts! I know we all feel like we know this guy, but that’s probably because of his relaxed and friendly attitude.

I have to say that, to me, Scott’s videos are the best of the video reviews out there. Sure, there are MANY awesome video reviewers whose videos I love, but there has to be a number 1, right? And that award has to go to Scott due to several reasons:

First of all, as I have already stated, he has such a friendly attitude and warm and clear voice. He is great at explaining the rules in details, and I really like this! It’s almost like reading the rulebook, but it’s much easier to watch the videos with thorough rules explanations first and then read the rulebooks afterwards as you are able to grasp the rules much better.
Of course, that can be said of any video review, but I think that Scott focuses on the important parts and guides the viewers through in a professional and coherent way.

Also, you cannot talk about Scott’s video reviews without mentioning the humorous aspect in them too! Scott has always tried to inject a bit of humour into his reviews and that’s part of his characteristics. I appreciate the small, silly comments he makes, and to mention a few there are:
Agricola with the sheeps/cows/boar sounds
Reef Encounter with the “help I can’t see” when the shrimp is turned upside down
Yspahan with the names of the souks

The introductions in games like Reef Encounter (underwater mask), Blue Moon City (painted blue face), Pillars of the Earth (cathedral pieces), Agricola (pronounciation) etc. all add to the uniqueness of Scott’s video reviews and they really make me as the viewer feel comfortable and leave me with a smile on my face.

Finally, I would lie if I said I wasn’t sad when I realized Scott wouldn’t make any more video reviews, but I fully understand and respect his decision! I’m also sad that I hadn’t discovered the wonderful world of board games two years ago when Scott visited Copenhagen – I would love to meet him in person! Maybe someday...

I wish you and your family all the best in life, Scott – thanks for your video reviews, they truly have provided hours of enjoyment and they sucked me into this wonderful world!

This was the first video of Scott's that I saw. I was amazed by the detail and care that went into his rules explanation and game walk through. When I was finished, both my wife and I not only knew we wanted the game, but we were confident we knew how to play the game without even cracking open the rulebook! I soon started watching all of Scott's videos (who can forget the "Ricola - Agricola" opening!), and miss his video work, though I do keep up with him on podcast. Thanks Scott! Great videos and contributions.

Back in early 2008 I decided to do my first video review for Settlers of Catan Video overview of Settlers of Catan. At the time I got some very good constructive feedback from Scott of what he did and didn't like about the review. He was very supportive and was happy to see other people starting to make video reviews. I even got invited into his Yahoo group for board game videographers so that we could discuss what games we would be reviewing next so that we could avoid any overlap.

In early 2008 there were very few video reviewers. Games like Puerto Rico etc. hadn't even been video reviewed! These days a popular gaming release will have 10 video reviews in the first month of its release!

There were no other video reviews in English about this epic game at the time, and there still isn't one. Thank you Scott for your Epic 30 minute explanation for this game. I always find it handy for the new player to watch while I set up the game.

Kind of an obvious one, and not very interesting (the choice of game, not the video), but it was my first Scott Nicholson video.

Bought the game for Christmas for the kids, who loved it (after some initial disappointment that it wasn't yet more Star Wars Lego...). Poking around online to learn more came across the Scott video, and subsequently watched many if not all of them.

When I think back to the contrast with my own board game enthused youth and how hard it was to get information about games, to source them, to figure out if it was worth risking hard-earned savings on them or not, the video reviews culture that Scott's work inspired are a huge leap forward! Not to mention BGG itself, of course!

The sound effects! No one impersonates a hungry polar bear as Scott! A hilarious review of this hilarious game. I purchased it soon after viewing Scott's great review. Since then we have had many merry times throwing fishes at each other.

Funny note: The starting player in Ice Flow is decided based on the best impersonation of a polar bear which always reminds me of Scott's review

"Go Caylus Commandos!"

This is easily my favorite Scott Nicholson moment. I was dying for him to review Caylus, my favorite game. While he never gave it a full treatment, he gave it a hilarious animated mini-review (at the beginning of his full review for Metropolys, which didn't interest me):

Long time fan of Scott's. Really loved this video. It made me buy the game and the kids just love it.

The great thing about Scott is his skill at teaching stuff. He can has a way of getting your attention, making you laugh and explain things in a simple and straightforward manner. Bravo, I say!
