In order to not get into a discussion of right and wrong. Lets assume it's the original designer/publisher are the ones doing the re-theme.

and for the sake of this list the game is identical in play as the original.

Sort of what Monopoly does but this time in a good way.

What game do you really like but would rather play with a different theme.

Anything really. This theme is just too silly and whimsical.

On the other hand, a Star Wars theme (Empire, Jedi, Rebels, etc) or a Game of Thrones theme would be great.

If Caylus was rethemed to Claustrophobia: Road into Hell, it'd be brilliant.

Imagine... Teams of condemned mercenaries compete to build a military HQ/mining facility in the deadly catacombs beneath the city of New Jerusalem. Their reward? A reprieve from the death sentence.

Claustrophobia: Road into Hell is a tense, skill-based 90-minute quest to construct mines and mecha, and deliver minerals to the city above. Each turn, the teams battle to redeploy the Redeemer deeper into the catacombs. If your workers are left undefended in the tunnels below this gun-toting warrior, they are menaced by swarms of cutesy trogolites and flee their posts!

With beautiful graphics and painted miniatures, pick up this great game today! devil

And you've got to admit, this dude would look great on the front cover!

If Colosseum were rethemed as a restaurant management game, I'd buy it too!

Every time I've taught Colosseum, I've actually presented it as such:

"Let's say you're a restaurant owner trying to expand your building, collecting ingredients, purchasing advertising, luring critics and celebrities, and researching recipes to be the manager who puts on the best single meal!

Got it? Now just switch all that to be a colosseum owner collecting assets, buying season passes and Emperor's loges, luring Consuls and Governors, and researching programs to put on the single most valuable show!"

Either way, I'll keep playing this amazing game!

Okay, not in keeping with the intent of this list since I would definitely NOT pick up this retheme, but some people might enjoy...no wait, not enjoy...rationally appreciate? an Ayn Rand retheme of this game. Of course the end game would have to change to when one player threw a hissy fit and upended the board 'cause the other players didn't appreciate his/her genius.

Nobody's named this one yet? I'm actually considering buying it anyway, but I'd rather it was themed to running some other sort of business. Let's say Koi. I'd buy this in a second if we were Koi breeders instead and I think that would fit the mechanics pretty well with different shows caring about color, pattern, size, body proportions, etc...

Totally serious.

I always thought that Ra was a little too much production for the rather simple game it was. When I saw the card game version, it made total sense. When it turned out to be a goofy mafia retheme, I stopped caring. I know some people thinks it fits better, but I'd rather play in Egypt, dammit!

Since I grew up in Sunday school, I've always been interested in seeing games implement the theme of the Torah/Old Testament. The stories have an epic sweep that would lend themselves well to an adventure game narrative. And besides, we've all seen cthuloid "old god" entities in a medieval/fantasy setting before. The bloodlust and conquest of the Fertile Crescent has yet to be explored.

In my imaginary retheme of "Chaos in the Old World" players act as the four primary pagan deities of the Cannanite region - Asherah, Baal, Molech, and Dagon. Their goal would be to corrupt the Jewish nation's worship of YHWH and thus pollute the royal lineage of the Messiah. The game is over once the Hebrew nation's idolatry is so flagrant that YHWH annihilates them in divine retribution.

I remember reading someone's retheme for SoC, though I can't find it and can't remember it all.

Instead of Knights of the Round Table, the game is rethemed in the X-Men universe. Instead of knights, the players play various mutants. Instead of siege engines, sentinels amass outside the gates. Instead of fighting the Saxons, you must fend off the Brotherhood. Instead of a traitor, one of your team might actually be Mystique in disguise! I don't know enough about the X-Men universe to find analogies for the other quests, but I think the ideas I remembered translate really well into the game rules.

My proposal for a Firefly game.

It's already about trading cargo in space. All the locations and missions on the cards could be adapted to The Verse. Space Pirates become Reavers. And the unique ship upgrades could be changed to characters from the show, which would make more thematic sense that only one player can buy each of them.

There could be games I haven't played that would work better, and people would probably want the game to be adapted for more than two players, but I think this could work.

I'll probably try this one anyway if it gets reprinted, but I'd want to try it even more if the game mechanics were applied to something medical like running a busy ER department. Sure, not filling your customers orders and having them leave is bad, but having patients bleed out and die would crank up the pressure of that little sand timer.

"Roll that die, we need blood stat!"
