Ever wanted some new BGG features?

So this is it! Here's our chance please put all the update ideas below and show support for those you wish to be implemented. This is an unofficial list with the hopes that the features with the most support really do get created.

What will happen with these proposals? I do not know. All I know is that without this list perhaps none of these would ever happen or even been thought of.

Also...
I have No-Idea as to the scope of work myself and others propose here nor do I understand the cost involved to do so. I do however know that I would, if possible do the programming and upkeep myself as time permitted. I am no programmer nor IT Technician but I have a job and would gladly donate money toward these features as I know that most of them would make great editions to an already Awesome site. It is my and many others home page and that will not change if these are not added. Thank you Aldie and team for the best website on gaming that without, I may never have had so many great friends or games. As for these proposed features, Please consider.

It's possible that some of these proposals are already features. If so please let me know and I will be eternally grateful.

I will re-order the list periodically to suit popularity

Log Expansions Under The Base Game

Rather then selecting the Base game and expansion and logging 2 plays you would select the base game and a set of big buttons would come up, one for each expansion and you would simply select those used (See Game Logging Update Feature). This would fix all logged plays and statistics for those that are into that. Probably not anyone at this site though?

"Fuzzy" search results, aka "Did you mean..."

There are often times I'm trying to quickly go to a game that is oddly spelled and it's like a meta-game in and of itself to find the game through the search feature. The ability to get close but not exactly right on a search and still have it show up would be a great boon.

Consolidate game series (different editions, standalone expansions, etc) into a single entry for the purposes of the board game rank ("top 100" etc) to avoid things like Puerto Rico and War of the Ring essentially getting multiple entries which reduces the exposure of other great games.

Each game would still have their own page and rating as they do now (so you can still tell how people rate the different versions of the game), but the series rating would just be the maximum of these.

This would remove some of the incentive for false 1 or 10 votes people put to give a game the "right" score.

Edit: As posted in the comments below, something like this is what I was thinking:

with the list of games in the series perhaps collapsible.

Edit 2: I've changed my mind about standalone expansions, and there's been some debate on how the heck you'd even accomplish this. So, my criterion for merging: if you'd never recommend to someone to buy game 1 and game 2 because they are the same game, then they should be merged (for the purposes of ranking only).

Kids Ratings

Please!
I would love to have kids ratings as a secondary rating available for all games. Here's how I propose it would work. The existing system stays but additionally each game has the potential to be rated with a kids rating that could be turned on or off or searched to find games suited to kids. Simply a few details added...
1.) The new rating
2.) The age for the rating / or ages (so the ratings could be searched by age.
3.) Childrens rating specific comments

"Depth" and "Complexity" instead of "WEIGHT"

Weight is very subjective and it seems it means different things for everyone. "Depth" would be more about the learning curve and complexity about the number of rules that you have to learn to be able to play the game.

Game Logging Update

To include these features...

I love logging plays but I find the interface a bit clunky if you play a lot of games. I'd love it if logging plays was more like a phone application with bigger buttons and all rather then having to type in all the details each play. For example when you select players instead of typing in their name you would have a customized set of buttons with each person you play with available so rather then fill in the details you just click on the LUKE, SIOBHAN and YOURSELF button and it knows it was a 3 player game and adds their user names and perhaps colors and such. The same for game length and location. This would speed up play logging immensely with more people logging plays and also with more details.

Also to be able to make a template for games days with the standard players and location and such as a selectable feature. If you're like me you'll be commonly playing with the same people

For Example (But it would look better then this!)

Find Trades by Location

Let's say I have a spare copy of something like El Grande. It's a popular game, and there are plenty of people who would like to pick up a copy. And I'd like to get it into the hands of someone who would play it, rather than have it take up space on my shelf.

Unfortunately, it's not a small game, and trading it to somebody who lives across the ocean probably doesn't make sense given high postage rates.

I would love to have a feature that allows me to search for trade partners by location, allowing me to find local people without having to wade through pages and pages of folks who live halfway across the world.

And I think quite a few people here would agree.

Jump to Page #

Somewhat related, it would be nice to be able to type a specific page number, instead of having to just click ahead a couple pages at a time. Once again, big issue when I'm on my phone and it takes longer for each page to load. If I know I was on page 15, it would be great to just jump right there without having to click a bunch of pages in between.

The ability to compare game collections with other users and guilds

I often find myself in a position of heading to a friends house or a gaming get together and trying to decide what games to bring. It would be awesome if there was a feature that allowed me to quickly see which games I owned that they didn't. I would use that feature similarly to request that they bring certain games, rather then sorting through the entire list.

Rate User Submissions Out Of 10

Similar to board game ratings.
Because when I'm searching through reviews/Video reviews all I have to go by are thumbs which are usually OK. However often the longest existing review will have the most thumbs and not necessarily be the better. This would hopefully correct that. So that new submissions that are fantastic can be placed where they should be. And also maybe...

More Image Categories
And in general, making it easier to find the image you're looking for.

I first posted this in one of the monthly Photo Contest Geeklists (last October):

Phil Fleischmann wrote:
It seems to me that the problem of proliferation of pictures is to break down the categories of photos more. Currently, we only have three categories: Game, People, and Creative. That frequently makes it very difficult to find the picture you're looking for. Would it be possible to split them up into smaller categories, like so:

Game - Pictures of the game being played, the actual game set up before, during, or after play.
People - Pictures that focus more on the people playing the game, or otherwise involved or associated with the game (like pictures of the designer, pretty girls holding the box, craftsmen in the process of creating customized components, tournament winners receiving their trophies, etc.).
Box - pictures of just the game box, cover art, side panels, back-of-the-box blurb, etc.
Components - pictures of the game components, perhaps laid out, inventoried, punched, unpunched, in the tray, the goodies inside the box.
Custom - pictures of customized components and accessories and related items.
Humor - pictures intended to be funny.
Artistic - pictures intended to display the art of photography with games as the subject.

Something like that. Maybe "Humor" and "Artistic" can be combined into one "Creative" category. Maybe "people" can be broken up into "players" and "box holders" and "other people". etc.

I'm not asking for dozens of categories, just a few more to make it easier to find what you're looking for.

For me as a newbie gamer, one great way I try to research games is by comparison. Especially now with all these games coming into the market. I would love to see a game comparison/contrast tool that would compare games based on mechanic, play style, theme, etc.

I put Hansa Teutonica here because that is my group's favorite game, so I've been on the hunt for another great game that has some similarities. Hansa is a tough choice for this one, because it is fairly abstract, but nonetheless I think my quest could be eased somewhat if there was a bit more emphasis on comparing/contrasting games.

This would also help Jones Theory practicers : )

One example is that I believe the Dice Tower (or one of the podcasts in that network) once did a side-by-side review of Eminent Domain and Core Worlds in the same episode, which was Awesome because I got an excellent feel for how the games compared, and which one may or may not fit the group I'd play it with better.

Shared Collections

For the couples out there. If I have an account, and my significant other has an account, there's no reason why we can't have a "shared" collection. She wants to have her own ratings and wishlist and such, but we should be able have the same "owned".

It'd be nice if she could go to my profile, and click "Share Collection". If I approve, anything I have marked as "owned" is marked as "owned" under her collection. Anything I later mark as "owned" automatically shows up under her collection, because we still have that relationship.

I haven't thought out all of the permissions yet, whether it's a collaborative collection or a read-only (or maybe that's a preference?), just a proposed idea that I thought would be handy.
