History fascinates me, as it is the ultimate insight into who we are as a species. It illustrates the absolute best and absolute worst aspects of the human condition. This list falls into the latter category. These games are racist, sexist, and address taboo subjects.

An artifact of Nazi Germany. Published in 1936 (one year after the installation of the Nuremberg laws), but not endorsed by the Nazi party. The object of the game is to get all six of your Jews deported. If only that were the worst thing that happened.

This one is misleading. Given the time period and a European designer, you would think this would have a much more sinister story. It's actually pretty cool. "Ghetto (possibly also called "Smelina") was a Monopoly variant set in the Terezin (Theresianstadt) Ghetto in what is now the Czech Republic. The game was designed in 1943 by Oswald Pöck, an engineer who was confined in the Ghetto at that time. Pöck produced the game for children who were confined in Terezin, and the game was passed from one child to another as they were taken from Terezin to the death camps.

Two copies of the game are known to exist: one at the Yad Vashem holocaust museum and another at the Beit Terezin museum."

When all players have three time tokens, players are selected at random to retire to another part of the house. This game plays well but caused a massive scene at my gaming group.

I saw it as a parody of how asylums were in the pre-1950s (with some discomfort but then I can't play war games for that reason). Some of the others saw it as so offensive the game hasn't come out since. I'm not sure if one of the group hasn't been back as a direct result either.

A nice roll and move - it's sin, apart from hierachical oppression?

All the sales and management rolls are men and the only women you can hire are as secretaries. Perhaps they could be retitled Personal Assistants or Executive Assistants and it would be all right?

This list is not controversial enough - yet...

War games. I can't play them. I have played Risk and a few others and Friedrich is a game I own but haven't played (I'm an historian), but wargames? And I do enjoy Kingmaker but it's always with a twinge in the back of my mind.

There are 'just wars' ie you have to stop Hitler or Al Queda but I'm just not sure; we do know what happens in wars right?

Now a full 12% of BGGers are solid wargamers so I do wonder about how this post will go, but wargames where we re-enact killing lots of people both enlisted and by implication civilian?

It does lead to a more philosophical discussion of conflict and reality and games per se.

Or is war politically correct.

Thoughts?
