Introduced two good friends of mine to this game by playing two 4-player games, and it was a huge hit! My friend Jerry won the first game, while I won the second. But all four players were within about 10 VPs of each other in both games! Of the three games I taught them to play this weekend, LoW was their favorite.

It was just Bill, Blake and myself for gaming this weekend. The holiday weekend took a toll on the gaming suspects.

Vinhos was the first game to hit the table. None of us had played it before, so we trudged through the rules (there's lots) and played. There is a lot going on with this game. It seems that there are never even close to enough actions to take before you need to get your engine in gear. This is certainly a meaty game that one play doesn't flesh out. I'm sure it will be hitting the table again.

After the fun of Vinhos, Blake brought out Cities. He prefaced this one with letting us know that it very well could replace our current "meaty filler" of Don Quixote. We played 2 games of Cities and , I have to admit, it's not bad. A quick, puzzle-like game. I actually won once (pure luck). I don't know if I like it more than Don Quixote, but I can see it scratching the same "meaty filler" itch.

Last game to hit the table was Catan Card Game. A game that none of us had played (we were very familiar with Settlers though). This one is deceptive. There's more game here than meets the eye. It was a close contest, as I was able to get to 10 just before Bill would have been able to (stole a road to get to 10). The University certainly helped.

All in all, a fun Easter weekend of gaming!

With my game group:
We started with a huge PitchCar with the First Extension (Jump), the 2nd Extension, the Long Straights, and the Cross. Always fun to flick on those long epic tracks!

Followed up with a game of Helvetia, my first. I finished last but enjoyed the game, it's way too small on the eyes though. Constantly leaning to try and figure out which symbols are on the tiles.
Then we played a 10 person game of Ca$h 'n Gun$ with 2 sets. Chaotic but always enjoyable! Finally a game of 6 qui prend! (Category 5).

Friday Night:
Quiet little 3 person session on Friday. Started off with Pizza Theory that a really didn't care a whole lot for. Then Takenoko that everyone enjoyed. Eminent Domain followed, always fun, but this game ended much too quickly due to all players colonizing. And to finish the night, a 2 player game of Finca, lovely game with very different moving mechanic.

This is the second game I taught my two good friends by playing a 4-player game. Accusations were tossed around from the get-go, and my girlfriend and our friend Carey managed to figure out who I was. But I had the card that allowed me to change my personality (which I saved for a long time). Since they were on to me, and I suspected one of the three non-dealt personality cards was Commander Vimes and the draw deck was getting, I changed personalities and luckily drew Vimes! I won the game shortly thereafter. meeple

For the first time ever, we played two 4-player team games, which we all enjoyed more than the 2-player game, due to the inclusion of two additional mechanics: passing cards to your teammate and no communication allowed. It was Guys vs. Gals, with each team winning once!

We wrapped up our gaming weekend by playing a 4-player game of this. Again, my two friends were new to the game, but picked it up quickly. The game didn't last nearly as long as the several 2-player games I've played, but it was still chaotic fun!

My girlfriend won by returning two treasures to her home square (she'd played two wall cards on her first turn preventing us from reaching her home square). Despite having three maintained spells (two walls and a movement stone) for 90% of the game (meaning her hand consisted of only 4 cards!), she kept drawing energy card after energy card, which further boosted her movement on every turn. We tried to destroy the stone, but she always had the right counter spell at the ready.

Ever have one of those games where everything goes right for a player? This was one of those games! Still, great fun and my two friends really liked it.

Not a lot of gaming this weekend. Yesterday I played the 3p variant of 1800, using my P&P copy. Two of us had played the 2p version before, and we both agreed the game is much better with 3. Tile placement is really tight in this one, and I got burned pretty bad with an unfavorable center tile position. Still, a decent way to play 18xx in an hour.

Also played Fortune and Glory. While the theme and components were really great, I found it to be a bit of a snoozefest. I've been playing more Ameritrash games lately, and really hating the downtime. I understand the critique that Euros have no theme, and I can understand that, but at least you're not waiting for your turn for 20 minutes watching other people roll dice over and over and over and over yuk

Friday
1x - Carcassonne won 239-149 rematch, incl: Inns & Cathedrals, Traders & Builders, and River II

My wife and I had played this last week for the first time in a while and after leveraging the Builder to build a few big cities for the win, my wife wanted a rematch. Fortunately for me, not so fortunate for her, I won even bigger this time around.

Saturday
7x - Dominion 3-3-1

Dominion has been the hot game for my wife and I this year. My sister and brother-in-law have enjoyed playing with us too.

My youngest wanted to play a card game and I persuaded her to try it. She has a track record of winning any game she plays for the first time, which was true in this case as well, we tied. My oldest, who has never had an interest in Dominion not wanting to be out done (or maybe wanting to avoid homework) asked to play.

Then my wife and I played 5 more games with two different mixes of Kingdom Cards. As is often the case with us we had an Aha! moment and realized a rule/card we were misplaying. We had to this point only used a Moat as protection against the Militia, but realized it can be used against any Attack card which was a big game changer in our last mix which inlcuded the Spy, Thief, and Witch!

Sunday
2x - TtR - Team Asia Two more losses.

After Easter lunch we brought out Team Asia to play with family who were interested in a game. I always get the new players for this one so I often have an uphill challenge. This was the case Sunday as well. Bottom line, my team lost both times 127-160 and 86-173. We actually played fairly well, but missing one link cost us some big negative points (-25) in game 1, and in game two we didn't have any longer routes and our last play gambles to get some already completed links back fired.

meeple Keep playing...

A three player game where everyone did quite well with the captain but I was able to make good use of my small market, large market, and office with the trader. I got the hospice early for extra colonists and thanks to the fortress and custom house bonuses I came out on top with a winning score of 52. Next player was five points behind, lots of corn for shipping and four quarries for cheap buildings. Third place had a great variety of goods thanks to her hacienda but they all went away in the captain phase and with no warehouse or factory she was always short on cash. We all enjoyed the game and saw where we could do better next time.

We played a 5-player session that demonstrated the crucial distinction between asking 'who have you eliminated' vs 'who have you seen'?

My wife marked off all the Franciscans due to some educated guesses she made, which turned out to be wrong. Not necessarily bad in and of itself; the way to succeed in this game is to play the odds a bit and not wait for iron-clad certainty. But the way she marked them off, she answered subsequent questions far more affirmatively than the situation actually warranted, leading us to end up having EVERYONE crossed off. One player figured it out and made a correct accusation, but we were all pretty messed up for a couple rounds.

We also played Telephone Pictionary (dead chickens & time-traveling children, ha ha) and a couple rounds of Incan Gold

Oh, and I got my Benders crushed by the Shadow Elves in a Vassal game of Summoner Wars.

The Saturday morning group started off with Risk Legacy. I had not played Risk in 30+ years (after I discovered 'real' games) and was very skeptical despite all of the changes. Well, after we played the 1st 3 games, I was a convert. Yeah, the combat system is still Risk and takes forever for large battles, and the additions make the game actually fun again! The shorter play time (we did 3 games in 5 hours), the difference in factions, the changes to the board kept us all very engaged. Will it keep its charm after 15 games? I don't know, and I'm eager to find out.

Then it was over to the FLGS for evening gaming. We started with a 4 player game of Glory to Rome. I was the only very experienced player, although the others had played at least once each. I won the game with 25 points, however one of the players had both the Circus Maximus and the building that lets you have 2x as many clients as your influence (I'm blanking on the name). He was in a position to score a ton of points, so I'm glad the game ended when it did. It went a little slowly with the new players, and everyone enjoyed it.

Then the main event for the evening, a 4 player game of Bios: Megafauna. 2 of the players were new, which didn't stop them from doing very well. The environment and cards hated me, and I did very poorly, coming in last. The game took us maybe 2 hours and everyone really enjoyed it. One of the players had to leave and one was tired, so we set it up 2 player next. This was the quickest game we played, we had a catastrophe on the 4th card draw and and the earth froze halfway through the 2nd deck. Since this only took 1/2 an hour, we set it up 2 player again! This time the earth survived and thrived until the end, even if our critters didn't do so well. The score was 18-18 at the end, and I lost by having only 2 genes to my opponents 3. A great time, and I'm loving this game!

I played a 3 player game of Runewars on Good Friday. We played with the BoW exp. without the Generals. I was Humans, Marc was Elves and Bryce was Uthuk. I got lucky in recruiting Dragons (my secret mission) and made a bold attack towards Bryce, leaving a trail of Strongholds along the way so I could defend myself from counterattacks nicely. They conceded my victory when the other guys showed up to play D&D. So, it still could have turned against me if both the other players allied, but I had pretty much wiped out Bryce and was the verge of getting his Runes.

We then played D&D for the rest of the night. I think we got in 3 or 4 encounters? Not sure, but Bryce's Paladin died in the last one against the Tiefling Necromancer. It was a fun night and I enjoyed the rest of the weekend with Family and some R&R.

Got in a 2 player game on Friday afternoon and a 4 player game on Saturday evening. Gotta say, this game is really a lot of fun. Not too deep but there is some strategy involved and it can get pretty tight the more players there are. I believe the winning score in the 4 player game was 115 where the 2 player game had a winning score of 158. This is our first Euro Style worker placement game and my wife is really enjoying it, and I was pleasantly surprised that it was enjoyed by our other two guests on Saturday night as well, being that they are more party type game folks.

Also played some Caveman Curling with my daughter on Friday and played a round or two of Flash Duel: Second Edition and a bad round of Forbidden Island after Easter dinner on Sunday. We forgot to save Fool's Landing and it sank the very first water rise card. Oops.

Despite a fairly hectic weekend with all the Easter hoopla, my wife and I got in a couple of games in the evening.

Saturday evening was Candamir - one of my wife's favorite games. I won 10-7, thanks to collecting a personal record 7 adventures.

Sunday evening was our first game of Dominion after a 40-day Lenten hiatus. We played with all expansions. She won the first game, and we tied the second game.

Dug this out at my son's suggestion. Figured out which cards I had made into a "deck", then tried to remember the setup rules ad how to play. Sadly, my son used his Horde-Fast Asleep-play another item deck just as he did last time we played I wager, and my faction-gathering-Scroll of Isildur deck just can't keep up. Especially with spiders and wolves the big combo in my hazard portion. I got off the Peril Returned-Wake of War-Wolves-Dire Wolves combo off once, but he had powerful dudes, and held it off with minimal fuss. Good fun. Need to make a new deck.

EDIT: WITH DRAGONS angry
