After three episodes of Wil Wheaton's board game show Table Top, I'm curious how many have actually bought one (or more) of the featured games. It certainly seems to be having some impact. The five games featured so far are all sold out at my FLGS. I myself succumbed last night and ordered a couple of games, having to pay shipping *shudder* because they were out of stock locally.

How much has Wil Wheaton impacted your wallet? Thoughts? Experiences? Is this new Wheaton effect a good thing, or are you left screaming, in the words of Dr. Sheldon Cooper..."WHEATON!"

EDIT: I will update after future episodes. Feel free to drop back to this list and let everyone know whether it inspires a purchase.

Episode 1 - $

Wheaton started with an enjoyable first episode highlighting a fairly light, popular game that a lot of people recommend as a gateway. If you're into light fantasy, the theme is appealing, with its mix and match factions. The conflict in the game is easy to understand. And...this episode made the game look like a lot of fun!

My experience...I actually initially checked out the episode because I had friends who were getting rid of their copy of Small World. Table Top was one of the things that helped me decide I wanted the game. (Board Games with Scott was the other.)

Am I glad I got the game?...Yes (and was lucky enough to get it cheap getting it used from friends).

Episode 2 - No $

This episode featured the game that even most non-gamers have heard of. I found the episode a little dryer than the first, possibly because of the game choice, possibly because of the chemistry between the people playing didn't seem quite as good as episode 1.

My experience...I've played Settlers in the past but don't own a copy. Still don't. However, I am surprised such a hugely popular, omnipresent game was out of stock where I checked.

Not being tempted to get this game is at least partly because I mostly play games just with my husband and try not to buy too many games that need more than two players. (We bought Rivals for Catan instead, but a long time before seeing Table Top.)

Episode 3 - $

Three quick games packed into one episode. (See next two entries for the other two games.)

Intriguing. Definitely not as well known a game as the first two episodes. I think this was an appealing choice to feature...attractive-looking game, easy to understand, quick to play.

My experience...Since I was already going to get Small World because my friends were getting rid of it, this marks the point at which Wil Wheaton started to cost me money. This is sold out at all the local games stores I checked, both ones that operate bricks and mortar locations and those that are just online. I ended up ordering a copy online from the other end of the country and paying shipping. Horrors! I could have waited to see if it came back in stock soon at my FLGS, but I'm not sure how easily available this game will be, whether it's still in print or not. I've looked at pictures of the game components before and thought they were attractive but not been interested in getting it. But watching it played hit the primitive ME WANTS ONE! part of my brain. Don't wanna wait more than I have to.

Glad I got the game?...We'll see when it arrives, but both my husband and I like tile laying games, so the odds are good.

Edit: Arrived yesterday and had two games this morning. Enjoyed it. Both my husband and I each won a game. If this makes sense, I would describe it as a calm filler, very deliberate but without long stretches of analysis paralysis. And everything about it is beautiful, far more beautiful than I would expect for a game of its price. Look forward to playing it with more than two players.

Episode 3 - $

The second game featured on episode 3 was a quick press-your-luck dice game with zombeeeez! Who doesn't love zombies? Looked fun as they played it. Looks like very good or very bad luck leads to fun trash talk/complaints. (And that was quite a run of good luck in this episode, wasn't it?)

My experience...This was already on my wishlist because I love me some zombies. It was always something I intended to pick up eventually, probably on impulse when I got another game. I ended up adding this to the order for Tsuro because it didn't add anything to the shipping cost. So this cost me money I would have eventually spent anyway.

Glad I got the game...We'll see, but I can't imagine not enjoying this one.

Edit: Arrived yesterday and immediately had a couple games. This is a fast, fun, easy (almost brainless *snicker*) filler. Perfect for a spare 10 minutes or to use to decide who will go first in a longer game.

One note, it is possible for the bottom of the dice cup to come off, leading to brains, shotgun blasts, and running feet to fly everywhere. Luckily the cat didn't get hold of any, but furniture did have to be moved. After this happened, both my husband and I just held the cup differently to avoid that happening.

Episode 3 - No $

The third quick filler in episode 3 was Get Bit! Pull-apart robots being chomped by a shark. Cute components.

My experience...This one didn't grab me like Tsuro and Zombie Dice did, but I'm thinking some people liked the looks of it because it is also out of stock where I checked.

I'd play it if someone offered a game, but this one isn't costing me any money.

Episode 4 - future $

For episode 4, Wil featured Ticket to Ride, a game that either is, or stands a chance of, making the crossover to mainstream game. It's certainly fairly widely available. This episode had great chemistry between the guests, even some spousal banter between Wil and his wife Anne. And a great moment near the end that probably caused a skipped heartbeat in anyone watching. (If you haven't watched the episode yet, you'll recognize it when you see it!)

My experience...Ticket to Ride is another one of those classic gateway games that I have somehow never tried. (I recently got shamed into trying - and then buying - Carcassonne, which I now love.) This was already on my radar as something I would like to try after learning my lesson that gateway games are often popular for a reason with Carcassonne. Also, unlike the other games in the series so far, this seems to still be in stock, at least in the three local places I checked.

Will I get the game? Yes, but not right away. I've bought a few too many games recently (including Tsuro and Zombie Dice from episode 3, which both arrived yesterday) and have to let my wallet recover a bit. But this episode did move it considerably up my wishlist.

It was about 3.5 years ago that I first saw this tweet from Wil Wheaton praising a co-op game called Castle Panic. The tweet pic piqued my interest, and I bought the game on a whim. 73 games and untold amounts of money later, I am an official board game addict. Curse you, Wheaton!
