I played one game of this. We liked it quite a bit as a 2-player game. I'm looking forward to more plays.

I like that you can gamble and maybe it pays off, maybe it doesn't. Either way, the game only takes 5 minutes so just play again.

Finally started playing this. I say started because the slog through the rules and constant referencing slowed things down. Seems like it has a lot of potential, and I love Twilight Struggle, which this system resembles. There is a lot of dice-rolling, though, and generally, the odds are against you, so it can be frustrating. The frustration isn't so bad if you view it as thematic: it's difficult to get other countries to change governments, and it's difficult to plant sleeper cells, etc. The rolling failures do make for more tension, and they make the events on the cards more interesting, since those are more of a sure thing. Also, it was great to be able to play two cards in a row, unlike in Twilight Struggle. That makes the hand management more interesting.

Also played Kingdom Builder a few times. This game seemed too simple and constrained the first time I played, but it has really grown on me. There are more strategic options than I first thought, and it plays very quickly, so it has its niche.

Pandemic: On the Brink- Played with 5 epidemics and lost. AGAIN.

Carcassonne- I haven't played this one in a very long time. But I managed to pull out a win.

Catan: Cities & Knights-A totally lopsided three player game of this,as the eventual winner absolutely crushed both of us for a frustrating gaming experience as neither of us could secure resources. 10 came up time and again and the winner had them both locked up.

Friday night I introduced some of my friends to Glory to Rome, which also included the Promo Cards. I ended the game by buying up the final building sites in order to prevent the player from my left getting the instant win with one of the new promo buildings. It was a close game. I won with 35, and another player that wasn't doing too well, but was vaulting a lot of marble ended up in second with 32.

Then I had them play Thunderstone Advance for the first time. I ended up winning this one by only 2 points over my wife. One of the players took an extremely long time before finally being able to defeat a monster, his card draws were just not helping him, and even getting to draw extra cards with some of the abilities didn't help. It was pretty comical (well, to everyone but him).

Next we played Carcassonne: 10 Year Edition, which was my first play with The Festival tiles. I got third, but all 4 of us were within 8-9 points of each other. Then we finished up the night with a game of Wasabi, where my wife and another player tied in points and wasabi cubes (which is the tiebreaker).

On Sunday, went to my parent's house for Mother's Day. We played a game of Ticket to Ride that I dominated in, and a game of Yahtzee Free For All that my mom dominated in. Then it was off to my wife's parent's house. We went out to eat, and came back and played a couple games of Code 777. My brother-in-law ended up winning both games.

Good weekend, and looking forward to Caylubration this week!

Two games were played this weekend.

1989: Dawn of Freedom - A loss for me (Communist win). My first time playing this one, and it is a goody. I hope to get this to the table again soon.

Twilight Struggle - Going back in time through history, my 1989 opponent took on the role of the USA. I led the USSR to a turn 4 victory, with the help of some seriously bad USA rolls.

Communism won the night 2-0.

Finally got to play this Feld game, which I have been waiting to try for some time now. I am a fan of Feld's designs and I must say CoB did not disapoint. I did fairly well on my first time out, coming in 2nd in a 3 player.

Friday night, the wife surprised me by suggesting we should play The Rivals for Catan. We have been playing the Era of Gold and we tried it one more time. She beat me pretty handily, 12-9.

Saturday, I went to Great Hall Games for some open gaming and played two games. Factory Fun was the first game and I got destroyed. Was my first time playing it and i thought it was very neat the way things get laid out andI would very much like to give it another go. I came in last by a lot in a 5 player. To say that I didn't get it at first is an under statement.

Next up, I taught 2 people Macao and was joined by another Macao veteran. The 2 rookies scored in the 60's and finished within 2 points of each other. The 2 veterans faired much better and came in 114-112 (I was 112). Was a great game and everyone enjoyed it a lot.

I went home to watch the kids so the wife could have some play time and a buddy came over and I taught him Rivals for Catan and proceeded to beat him pretty badly twice, using the Era of Gold.

Sunday, the wife again surprised me and we played our first Era of Turmoil game of Rivals for Catan, and I wont this one pretty easily as well, breaking her several game winning streak.

All in all a pretty good weekend for me:

Rivals for Catan x4
Factory Fun x1
Castles of Burgundy x1
Macao x1

With my gamegroup:

We played 3 games of Space Alert, all of them 5 player games with two newbies. I always throw newbies in full missions after explaining the game. It went pretty well, first game we lost in the 8th action, destroyed by damage in the red zone. Second mission should have gone better, but a mix-up between myself and a veteran player regarding when to shoot caused us to die in the 6th. Finally, the 3rd mission was a success, winning with 13 points.

We then followed up with a 3 player game of Thunderstone Advance: Towers of Ruin, I introduced it to 2 players, rookies to the series. It was a good game, I assisted them both with the decision making and both enjoyed the game.

Friday Night:

Game night at one of my gamegroup's house, 8 of us played from 7PM to 3:30AM. We split in 2 groups, I played Eminent Domain with the Eminent Domain: Bonus Planets in a 3 player game, I ended up tying 2nd, while the others played Navegador. As 4 of them then started Tigris & Euphrates, the 3 of us with the lone player enbarked in a game of Dungeon Lords, the first for 3 of the 4 players. It was a very tight game and I took the win 17-16-15-14. Fun game, nice theme for a worked placement!

Then as the other group finished their game of Power Grid, we played Contrario fora few minutes. As 2 folks left, we played 3 games of The Resistance with 6 players. 6 is one of the toughest numbers for the Spies, I played Resistance all 3 games and we won 3-1 in each game.

All and all, a good weekend for gaming!

This was a weekend for introducing friends to a new game, and introducing new people to gaming.

Saturday was the monthly game day at the Urbana Free Library. I had lunch at the local food co-op beforehand, and invited someone I struck up a conversation with to come along to check out the gaming scene. Two of us joined the newcomer in a three-player game of Pandemic. Even playing with just four Epidemics, we managed to lose--we worked out future actions and it looks like the deck of player cards ran out two turns before we could have cured the fourth disease. I was the Operations Expert, a role I've never gotten the hang of. There were so many clusters of cubes to be cured that I only built two new research centers all game; I suspect that if I'd spent a couple of turns building early on, we might have pulled the game out. Despite the loss, the newcomer said he had fun playing something other than Monopoly and that he'll try and stop by again next month. (The Urbana Free Library has its game day the second Saturday every month.)

A mother and her three daughters stuck their heads in the room while the games were underway, and those of us nearest the door gave them a hearty greeting and told them "the water's fine". The youngest of them spotted Power Grid on the library's cart of games; Mom spotted all the pieces and wisely suggested this wasn't the game for them. I pulled Wits & Wagers Family from the shelf and suggested it was their best bet. They sat down at a table and I speed-read through the rules to see how they differ from the grown-up version of the game so I could teach them to play. I really like the way they've simplified the original; even adding the kid-friendly icons to the backs of the cards you put your answer on make this game that much better for the younger crowd. I also like the "1" card that you can put your markers on if you think everybody's guess is too high--that'd be a good addition to the original, too. As it turned out the youngest of the group ended up winning the game; with luck we'll see these four again, too.

Later that night my usual gaming group got together. There were seven of us there and I thought maybe we'd be best off playing two separate games, but since we had Bohnanza on hand we all piled around one table--two experienced players and five folks new to the game. We were still at it two hours later...hard to fathom, but between all of the interaction you'd expect from six people potentially interested in the current player's turn and so many of us not knowing the game, I suppose I shouldn't be surprised. We're all friends from way back so these evenings are as much a chance to hang out as they are a chance to game, so the interaction played really well and we'll see this one again despite the length of time the game took.

So, nothing new for me this weekend, but I had a good time just the same. Some weeks you get to learn about piles of new games from other people; sometimes you get to do the teaching. With luck we gained some new Geeks this weekend.

Light gaming week for me, as I was off to Montreal in search of an apartment.

Nonetheless, last night I played Shadow Hunters for the first time and really liked it. I tend not to be a fan of big group, social deduction games; I think Werewolf and the Resistance are dreadful. But I do like The Castle of the Devil, and I really liked Shadow Hunters. Both games have mechanics whereby you can learn about the other players directly, which I appreciate.

Also played another first, The Phantom League with the Mostly Harmless expansion. None of us had played before, so we kind of wallowed our way through the rules. It seems like there's a pretty neat game in there, but like many heavy ameritrashy titles, you have to play it a lot and learn all the cards and rules exceptions before you can really grok it. So I'm looking forward to playing it more, but I despair of ever knowing it well enough to reach that point with it. This is why I tend to prefer euros, but I really loved the theme on this one.

Taught Dungeon Petz to three new players. This game is the embodiment of orderly chaos - there's too much stuff to do and not enough time to do it, you can predict some things but not others, and sometimes everything just goes horribly, hilariously wrong.

Followed up with two rounds of Innovation, lost them both. I've played this game 5 times now, and I still can't tell whether I love it or hate it.

Friday night saw one game of Carcassonne against my wife, the highlight of which was the realization at the end that I really wasn't paying much attention to the scoring, because my wife lapped me and I hadn't noticed.

She and I played At the Gates of Loyang on Saturday night. It hadn't hit the table in some five months, but we had no problem getting back into it. The rules never even left the box. My wife managed to get to an early lead and though I caught up, I just couldn't pass her on the path. She ended up with 13 or so more coins than I so won.

On Sunday, got Upon a Salty Ocean on the table for a second time this week against my wife and a friend. The first play (on Thursday) was a dismal failure, but this time it went better. Both my opponents went heavy into fishing so I decided to minimize my actions and stick primarily to playing the salt market and building out the cathedral. While it was enough to place second, my wife did just a little too well with fishing and building and as is typical with our first plays of any game, she won.

Games, games and more games!
mbmbmbmbmb

Saturday:

Lots of games of Innovation were played at our house on Friday night, but neither my husband or I actually got to play any of them, so on Saturday we decided to have a game ourselves - the game went very much my way, and although my husband tried his best to stop me, and certainly delayed me a few turns, in the end I just had too many ways to win. Then we played a few games of Magic: The Gathering.

Sunday:

Sunday is HeroQuest day for the kids, and we played another level, with the 2 year old even joining in for the first half, although as it was a longer map than usual, he left before the end. My daugher was very excited by her new crossbow, as it meant she could explore with less danger of being attacked first. She also was fighting to be the one to search for treasure, but my husband decided he wanted to be the one to find treasure for a change! After we finished the kids asked to play PAC-MAN Game, and my husband got picked on a lot, and couldn't roll a number bigger than 2, so almost ended the game without any beads at all! Then in the evening after the kids had gone to bed we played another game of Innovation, which my husbandd won easily (I was always exactly one turn behind him for scoring each achievement!), followed by the last 8 games of our M10 Magic tournament.

Started Friday night off with a Newt Gingrich memorial game of Campaign Trail with my club. I made it to the third ticket before dropping. It is the farthest I have ever got in the game. I love playing it.

The rest of the weekend I spent with my wife, quality time playing Zooloretto and Aquaretto 2 player.I love both of those games as well.

Picked this up Saturday with a 20% off coupon at Barnes and Noble. Got it to play at Mother's Day with my wife's family. Went over very well.
Played 5 games. One two player game that took forever.

One word of advice: Never play this game with a teacher

Played some Electronic Labyrinth. Fun, simple, lighthearted game. There's enough strategy invovled to keep it interested, but...well, you're pressing buttons on a plastic book to get your quests. Needless to say, it ain't aimed at more "hardcore" boardgamers.

Played a few sessions of Takenoko. A good game. There's more strategy to it than I would have thought. My wife and I played it 2p. While it's okay 2p, I think the game would be far more interesting if played with 3 or 4. BEAUTIFUL components, though.

Played a game of Carcassonne. Haven't played it in FOREVER, but it was fun to lay some tiles and steal some castles. My wife whooped me 138 to 118.

Also got in a game of Grind. Goodness I LOVE this game! My wife and I hadn't played this in several months so the game was mostly meant to reacquaint us with the rules. I think next time we play we'll use league rules and start up a team for each of us to customize and develop.

One game of Labyrinth: The War on Terror, 2001 - ?. It was the first time for a friend of mine who owns it and we thought it had great potential.

Then we played 2 tutorial missions from Space Alert. We enjoyed it but my main playing group is more inclined towards strategy games, often economic based.

Finally we played two games of a 4 man Brass, which we all have played over 20 times. I won both games by building ports and ships, adding coal, iron and some rails in the mix. I always play the game tacticaly and follow the demand as then you get more vp's per cash. The second game I won with 160 points which is our groups record, the old one was 159

the 5 year old really wanted to play a game with my wife for mothers day, and he picked out this!

She did quite well, for not being the gaming type. I think it helped that the cards were "if... else..." clauses and all she had to do was read them to know what the monsters did. Still, she couldn't quite grasp the attack vs AC concept, always trying to add the attack (+7) to the AC (14) and saying "I have to roll a 21 to get this guy?!?!?"

Anyhow, she tried. And while we ended being overwhelmed by monsters, she brought enjoyment to the family, and this is why she's such a great mom (and wife)!

He's looking real sharp in his 1940's fedora. He's got nerves of steel, an iron will, and several other metal-themed attributes. His fur is water tight and he's always up for a fight.

He's a semi-aquatic egg-laying mammal of action. He's a furry little flat-foot who'll never flinch from a fray. He's got more than just mad skills, he's got a beaver tail and a bill.

I played Lego Zendo all weekend with my 6 year old. I recommend it.
