UPFRONT EDIT: Sweet Merciful Mary and Joseph the response has been fantastic. Look at all that GeekGold. I'm Scrooge McGeek over here. I'll distribute all of it to this list. Thank you.

If you take the challenge, here are microbadges for it: mb(for taking it), and mb(for completing it).

There's a trend on BGG that pleases me: a push for more in-depth analysis of games. Three notable manifestations can be seen in doubtofbuddha's long and now famous essay calling for deeper reviews, qwertymartin's Voice of Experience reviewing contest (now in its second year), and NateStraight's delightful discussion of Roads and Boats.

I get immense pleasure from deep thinking about games, and so I want to support the trend. But how?

For various reasons, I have a pact with myself: when I buy a game, I must play it at least 100 times before I buy another.

With my most recent purchase (Finca), I've gone a step further: not only am I recording my 100 plays on BGG, but I'm making comments about each play. I record my evolving thoughts about the architecture of the game as well as my strategic/tactical understanding.

Doing so has been unexpectedly awesome. As I write comments after each play, my understanding grows, and I bring it with me into subsequent plays. And then my head swirls with interesting thoughts that I don't think I would've otherwise had.

Having stumbled onto such an enjoyable activity, I want to bring others in on the fun. Here's the challenge of this geeklist.

Resolve to play a game 100 times and to record each play.
Post the game to this geeklist, and link to your list of plays/comments, so we can all enjoy them as they slowly and gloriously accrue.
Write comments about your developing understanding after each play or session.

There's no time limit and no rush. If it takes you 5 years to complete the challenge, great. This list isn't going anywhere.

This is a long-term geeklist/experiment, so I'll support and comment on it regularly over time.

Note: your comments needn't be as long as mine (I'm enjoying this exercise so much that I'm going a little overboard).

[EDIT] I'll give out gg in some manner to provide a little incentive. I've got 21gg 27gg 33gg 43gg 47gg 59gg 68gg 168gg A LOT at the moment (thanks for the donations, donators, and especially to Captain Qwyx, who donated 100gg. You read that right: 100gg. Who is this guy? The Howard Hughes of BGG, evidently), all of which I'll happily part with to promote this challenge, and I'll add to it any gg which is donated to me in the meantime.

I'll give in 5gg or 10gg or 20gg increments to award the contributions to, or activities related to, this list that I like most. I'll give away all the gg I get between now and whenever at least 5 people have completed the challenge, and possibly longer, and I promise not to spend my gg on anything else. I'll list the recipients below because recognition is fun.

GG Awards

5.00gg to JesterPoet for being the first to accept the challenge.

5.00gg to Typpo for posting an already-in-progress play log for Once Upon a Time: The Storytelling Card Game wherein he summarizes the stories resulting from each game. Funny.

5.00gg to alfonzo54 for Unbridled Ambition: Alfonzo's tracking his plays for Mage Knight Board Game, which is the longest game among among the 27 that have been posted to this geeklist (well, except for the one for The Campaign for North Africa, which must be a joke, because really that's gotta be a joke right?) Not only that, but he already has 28 carefully commented games in his play log, which suggests that this isn't just empty bluster. The man's an animal.

5.00gg to Cody Coeninger, winner the Presentiment Award, for having completed the challenge before it even started. Cody has already completed and commented on 138 games of Warmachine Prime Mk II. He even has his own separate blog for it.

5.00gg to Canales for two things: creating a geeklist to track his games, which is pretty cool, but then also for posting the most detailed comments I've seen for a play here so far.

5.00gg to Tidalick's randomly selected entry because you beautiful, generous souls keep dumping GeekGold into my account and I've got to get rid of it somehow. Also Nina Simone's on the radio and it's making me feel magnanimous.

10.00gg to jmanders85, half of it for being the first to commit to tracking 2 games at once, and the other half for including a progress bar in his entry, a practice which has been subsequently adopted by many other participants, including yours truly.

5.00gg to dam the man so that he can afford to pay for treatment for repetitive stress issues related to his extensive-to-put-it-lightly comments on his Arkham Horror plays.

20.00gg to veenickz for being, as far as I can tell (my infrequent checking and the unwieldy size of this list makes it hard to tell) the first player to complete the challenge. If this were a race (it's not), he'd win. The game he chose for the challenge was Race for the Galaxy, so maybe he thought it was a race.

10.00gg to Mo for turning his 100 play challenge into a geekblog.

10.00gg to SirHandsome and his entry for a) laying out some goals for his 100 plays which are more thoughtful than just "play a bunch of times", and b) for keeping a breakdown of color-coded win stats for the factions of Chaos in the Old World, broken down further by number of players. I like color coding.

5.00gg to Petroski because Star Trek.

10.00gg to Scott Douglass for being, as far as I can tell, the second player to finish the challenge. Secondarily, the award is for playing Puzzle Strike (Third Edition), which is on my short list for my next 100 Play Challenge game, so reading his game remarks was interesting.

10.00gg to Lebotin for three reasons: 1) he also turned his challenge into a geekblog; b) Every time I open BGG I see a new entry in Lebotin's 100 play challenge blog. Every time. It's like he's monitoring me; and 3) jmanders just dumped another 40gg into my account to distribute to participants. Every time I think I'm starting to get the geekgold situation under control here, some exceptionally rich user comes along and tosses like 12 metric tons of geekgold at me.

20.00gg to Taibi for adding the 100th game to this list (Kingdom Builder). I remain shocked by the number of the participants and the enthusiasm here. The 100 Play Challenge even made it into BGG's top geeklists for 2012, and we're still going strong in 2013.

10.00gg to dr.wheatie, because his 100 Play Challenge entry got featured at Victory Point Games. I'm a sucker for publicity.

20.00gg to Stasia Doster for deploying the best playcount ticker yet used for the 100 play challenge, which subsequent entrants have also used. The ticker comes from a website called the tickerfactory that does nothing but provide tickers. There truly is a website for everything. I'm giving Stasia a lot of gg because I still have a *ton* in my account and it's been a while since I've given any out.

20.00gg to Mark Saya for completing 100 plays of Onirim in exactly 100 days. Round numbers will get me every time.

30.00gg to ohgrande for marshalling not one but two official 100 Play Challenge GeekBadges into existence (one for taking the challenge, the other for completing it: mbmb). Biggest single GeekGold award here yet, because nothing I've done in my decade here on BGG has had honor of a badge before, and I'm blissfully happy. Never thought a few pixels could have so much meaning.

5.00gg to swampers for being the 400th person to thumb this list and because who cares why not.

5.00gg to A.J. Porfirio because, after Mikolaj Laczynski decided to take the challenge with A.J.'s game Hostage Negotiator, A.J. offered to send him the latest version of the game for free.

5.00gg to myself for completing my own challenge in a mere 469 days.

10.00gg to rayr for seeing that I was looking for Metropolys for my next game for the challenge, and remembering me when he saw a new copy of it for a very reduced price at his FLGS, and then asking me if I'd like to purchase it through him. To which of course I agreed post haste.

10.00gg to FauxSloMo for taking the challenge with Slither, my favorite game in the whole wide world.

8.00 to bouf alaxx because he wrote me to say he wanted to purchase a 100 Play Challenge Microbadge now that he's participating, but lacked the funds. How could I not provide them? Anything for the cause. Note: I can't promise I'll do it again if someone asks again. But I might. Or I might not.

10.00gg to Chris Flood for the neato idea of employing natural selection to choose his game for the challenge. In a kind of meta-aspect, Dominant Species is one of the games competing for survival.

20.00gg to Severin Larche for turning the 100 Play Challenge into his own personal 10x100 Play Challenge, wherein he attempts to play 10 different games 100 times each. Making the commitment to do that would be impressive by itself, but halfway through 2014 he's actually managed to play 4 games 100 times each, which is surely the most impressive completion rate on this list, regardless of whether he meets his overall goal.

5.00gg, belatedly, to Patrick Wager, for being the 200th entrant into the 100 play challenge.

10.00gg to Jeremiah Dwyer for playing Rory's Story Cubes 100 times to invent bedtime stories for his 5-year-old. There's no way to avoid giving gg in response to such high levels of adorableness.

10.00gg to William A because (this is a bit complicated), I commented on his entry (for Caverna: The Cave Farmers) that someone had recently taught me the game and I didn't hate it (in sharp contrast to other Uwe games). Then he commented back to me that he was surprised to learn *I* was the person in charge of this geeklist, implying he knew me. Then my dim lightbulb suddenly went off and I realized not only that I do know William, but he was the very one who taught me Caverna a couple of weeks earlier, in a random encounter between strangers at a con many states away from where I live. So bizarre.

10.00gg to haslo for completing his challenge in under a month. Blazing speed.

10.00gg to Chris LeSka because of the huge number of scenarios he's trying to play for his challenge, for the game Warfighter: The Tactical Special Forces Card Game.

This is a great idea! Games seem to come and go too fast these days. Unfortunately both Summoner Wars and Quarriors! have both been picked already. That's cool though. Instead I choose to play Pandemic. I've only played it a few times but every time I do I'm amazed at what can be achieved with just a couple decks of cards and some cubes. I know it says 2-4 players on the box but I will mainly be playing this one solo. I don't find that the game changes much by playing alone. Looking forward to posting my thoughts. See you at the finish line.

After getting the game, Arkham Horror quickly became one of our favorites. When we are in the mood to hunker down and invest an evening in games, we play Arkham. It is a heavy cooperative game in which players work together to defeat an Ancient One in the Lovecraftian world of New England.

We play Arkham Horror once a month, if not more, during the school year (something has to cut out the tediousness of college after all!) so once September hits we will play more regularly since our core gaming group is more spread out over the summer.

It will be interesting to see how the game evolves as we play against different Ancient Ones and with different numbers of players since it seems to effect game play greatly.

We also have the Innsmouth and Dunwich expansions. We may play with them in later plays to see how that effects the game.

I love the story of this game...

And there are plenty of expansions to make this a go. I count each of my adventures as one play, so I've made good progress already, and kept all my notes from each game. This gives me a reason to record them here.

Love this idea!

This is a fantastic idea!

T&E is by far my favourite game, therefore it will be fun to see:
1. Whether it still feels fresh after 100 plays or if I've gotten tired of it.
2. If I've gotten a better feel for how much of the game is determined by player skill and how much that is determined by luck-of-the-draw.

I'll probably never get to 100 plays though (especially since a good friend I rarely meet has borrowed my copy), but I'll try to play as much as possible. And I'll begin counting from zero, since I usually don't log my plays on BGG, and have probably never commented on a single one.

Edit: Oh, right. I had completely forgotten that I'm terrible at T&E. So I'll add a third goal: Suck less!

I've already played this about 30 times, but I'll start from scratch as I don't know nearly the details of each run. But I love this game and have both expansions, so trying to get it to 100 may take a while, but I'm willing to go for it.

Just got this and was thinking I want to put a lot of plays in since there seems to be deeper strategy.

Played once so far, took us ~3 hours to get through all the rules and setup, and then we played for 8 hours before coming to what we THOUGHT was a Military Victory tie (Shadow - 10 pts, FP - 4 pts at the end of turn).

Excellent idea for a geeklist! My first choice was taken: The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game, and I've already played that over 100 times. In addition, every play but one is solo, which might limit my thoughts on the game somewhat.

My next choice was Innovation, which I really enjoy. Additionally, the sheer number of cards, combinations, etc., would appear to make this an excellent choice, especially given the expansions. However, I'll leave this to someone else. The problem for me is getting to play this often enough. There are several people in my gaming group who enjoy this, but no one at home.

So, I decided to go with Sentinels, for several reasons:

1)I want to play this more, and this gives me a ready excuse to be more of a default recommendation.

2) Re-playability. The base game alone comes with 10 different heroes, four villians, and four environments. I can try out numerous combinations to get a better feel for which heroes complement each other, who is more effective versus different villians/environments, etc.

3) Expansions add to #2. I backed Infernal Relics on Kickstarter, to include the additional promo deck. I'm planning on picking up Rook City as well. This will likely add to my desire to get more plays in.

4) Appeal/Flexibility - I can get this to the table in a number of ways. My game group is more Eurogame oriented, but there are several guys who'll enjoy playing this, at least occasionally. In addition, My 10-year old has enjoyed his couple of plays; as he continues to watch The Avengers, X-Men, etc., my guess is that he'll want to play this more often. I've also played it solo - while not an official variant in the base rules, the game is a coop, and as such it lends itself to solo play. This way, I can comment on general facets of the game, as well as situation-specific details (i.e. what heroes may appeal more to kids, what to choose if playing solo, etc.).

From here on out, I'll note the heroes used, the villian, the environment, a couple of significant points of the game, the outcome, and final thoughts.

I love going back and reading the comments from games I've played a lot of... and I certainly hope to be playing long enough to log 100 or more plays of many of my favorites (Agricola... Hansa Teutonica... Go... Container... Galaxy Trucker... 7 Wonders... etc... so many good games!).

For this list I'll nominate Taluva to keep track of. Its the newest game to my top ten with a 9 rating and its realtively short play time means it will see faster progress toward 100 plays than many of my other games. I've already logged 8 plays since that first one in February and its a constant fixture in my game night bag. I'll try to crank up the level of detail of my recording for this project too!

I originally joined the challenge using the commands and colors family. I have now decided to do it with just memoir after a recent flurry of plays. I want to focus on the play of just memoir.

I didn't comment on all my plays. Life gets in the way and I forget the game details. Many of them do have comments and sometimes they comments are a synopsis of several games leading up to that play.

Here is a link to my plays with comments:
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/plays/thing/10630?userid=61096

Now at 88%

Here are some things I am trying to observe:

1) How different scenarios make for different experiences. Narrative is important to me and I want to see how theme and strategy is the same and different from scenario to scenario.

2) How much luck is there in this game? I.e. will learning strategies and getting better at the game really make a difference if you just have bad cards or bad dice rolls?

3) General strategies to be a better player.

4) Specific strategies for particular scenarios/unit types

One caveat to myself: I am not going to read strategy articles or session reports about the game while I am trying this. I will read comments made on the geek list but that is it.

My general observations

After 24 plays
I am really getting a handle on the flow of this game. It is really important to manage the cards and when to attack, withdraw, or counter attack. Seeing the window open and taking it leads to many a victory. Also cycling through cards and keeping troops pulled back out of range is important while saving up the cards for an assault (the all section, 3 section, 2-2-2, infantry assault, armor assault, direct from hq, move out, their finest hour cards are key to this strategy). Using the recon cards are also very valuable for this strategy. Using the cards with 1 unit to set up proper position and using the other cards to assault.

after 45 plays
My favorite units are finnish ski troops and mobile artillery. They are both great fun and provide a lot of tactical options. I am really liking the options available on the breakthrough scenarios. Much more positioning and maneuvers available. I also really like the breakthrough deck with the on the move orders.

My new strategy on scenarios with artillery is to move them up as quick as possible and focus on them attempting to drive back opponents. It is tough to maneuver while under such duress. While the artillery barrages moving other troops into place in terrain.

after 60 plays

My favorite units are mobile artillery, command car, and the heavy anti-tank guns. I am really enjoying the control of the battlefield that the guns give you as well as the command cars awesome command abilities. I still LOVE the breakthrough scenarios and deck of cards. I believe that is how the game is meant to be played. No other scenarios offer the maneuvering and tacticsof the breakthrough.

My strategy is to focus on counterattacks. I have seen a great deal of victory when I keep my troops back and responded to te attacks of my opponents.

after 82 plays

I love the breakthrough scenarios. They are so much fun. I'm really looking forward to the D-day landings expansion with the pre printed breakthrough maps.

Strategy: I'm finding counterattacking to continue being an effective strategy for most scenarios. Even on the attack if the defender does not have well positioned artillery you can bring your own artillery up and pound his entrenched positions and bypass these positions with your mobile troops.
A perfect example of this is tanks vs. entrenched infantry. DONT DO IT. And if you have to, keep them three spaces away so the opponent only rolls 1 against you too. Use those takes to mop up the troops that get caught out in the open, the rear troops, and to pursue pesky troops like snipers, artillery, command car, etc.

Luck Also really counting up your dice and making sure you are rolling more than your opponent is a very important part of this game. If you are consistently rolling 1 die and your opponents 3, you will lose. I think this game is much more about tactics than luck. There certainly is taking probability into account, but if you plan your cards and keep mindful of how many dice you are rolling and allowing your opponent to roll with your moves you should come out way ahead in the luck department.

Due to the complexity of the family and the duration of the games, I believe one hundred plays of several of them is a valid entry, is not it?

Not sure if this qualifies... I've written up every single game of Warmachine I've played, at battlemechanik.com

138 games at last count. In addition to the per-game comments it has breakdowns of w/l ratio by faction and warcaster.

Hopefully I'll have the time soon to write an overall analysis/review of the game as a whole, and put it in the BGG reviews section. There are certainly some issues I wish I was more aware of in advance.

I've continually got a stiff for Warhammer: Invasion and have easily had 40+ games with my most dependable gaming partner (nice work Lenny!)

While not the play logging type, I'll gladly take up the 100 plays challenge and comment along the way - it will take a while, even though this is the game that sees the most regular table time. I'm not a competitive player and don't find any joy out of optimizing and agonizing over the 'perfect' deck - I just buy all the battlepacks I can and make massive faction decks. Yep, we are probably doing it wrong but I don't care. After 50 or so logged plays, we will try crafting our own decks of only 100 measly cards and go from there.
It will be a long, long road.

Love W:I, love this list and love the Geek.

Oh, but I can't promise you 100 plays before I buy another

I accept the challenge and have chosen Hawaii.

As of now, I already have 6 logged plays and can tell this has a shot at 100 plays even without the challenge to keep me going. My wife likes the game a lot and we both enjoy it with 2 players so the majority of my plays will be 2p. This game is also available on Board Game Arena where I hope to get some 3+ player games played as well.

I've only commented on my most recent 3 plays. Hopefully I'll be able to complete this when I visit my brother (or at least come close). I'll have to see whether he likes it enough to play it ~97 times in about a week. I'll probably end up only getting ~40-50 plays from the visit, since I also want to teach him Summoner Wars and play 7 Wonders.

It doesn't feel as balanced as Yomi, but I don't have enough experience to say for sure. I can tell that I like the mechanics better (and I like Yomi).

I'm going to give this one a try. I like the game well enough, but I haven't played it in a long while and I don't recall ever using any of the expansions. This should be pretty easy to do: I've just finished teaching for the year, so I've got plenty of time on my hands. Plus, I won't have to force anyone else to play a game over and over, so it's just more of an endurance trial for me.

I'm looking forward to trying it out, learning the flow of the game and starting to play with the expansion rules. Should be fun!

I followed this game when it was a PnP... I logged quite a few plays then...

I playtested for it. Quite a few more plays.

And now, I get to play the finished product... But let's start the count over. I'll be logging 100 plays of this one...

Let the games begin.

Very nice GeekList idea. This looks like it could be fun. I am going to give this a try with Dominion. I have owned the Base game since March of 2009 and currently have every expansion and promo card except Governor. I just checked my logged plays of Dominion and see that I have 118. I have left comments on 79 game plays. I have probably played about 150 F2F of Dominion but have not logged all of them. I think I have played about 300 times on Dominion Isotropic and another 100 on BoardGame Arena and BrettSpeil combined. I never log online plays.

I just recently got a few friends hooked on Dominion so hopefully I will be able to get a 100 logged games with comments. I am not going to go back in and try to remember and add comments to games that I didn't comment on originally. Here is my current list of logged F2F Dominion games. I will update it when I reach 100 logged games that all have comments. Most of the time we play multiple games of Dominion in a session so there will be times when there are 5 games played and only 1 comment.

Current Logged Plays: http://boardgamegeek.com/plays/thing/36218?userid=207162

Even after all these plays I still really enjoy Dominion and will NEVER turn down a game. Everyone I have taught the game to has liked it and wanted to play more than once. I may be one of the few people that does not mind all the shuffling in F2F gamesshake

So I'm still new-ish to the hobby and I've been trolling around BGG for the past few months feeding my new addiction, reading lots of reviews, blogs, and geeklists. I've been wondering how/if I should jump in and make a contribution.

The Voice of Experience contest was fun to follow along to, with all of its extensive, in-depth reviews. But that seemed like too much for someone at my lower experience level. Then this geeklist came along with a similar feel to it. To review a game from it's beginning all the way through to 100 plays is a very intriguing concept. So I'm finally jumping in.

I'm going to try Friday -- the "little" solo deckbuilder of a card game. It is fairly new to me, so I went back and added comments to my first few plays, and I look forward to continuing the journey to see how well this one holds up over time.

Progress: 100 Plays (updated 12-Oct-2014)

Jeeze, I can't believe nobody has done this one yet.
I will be playing this with the Cities and Knights expansion occasionly, as well as the fish.
For each post I will to focus on one feature of the game, usually the defining feature of that play. (eg, Trading, Development Cards, Cities Etc...)
If I run out of aspects before 100 plays then I guess I will just have to buy more expansions.

I will post a link as soon as I log the first play

Right, after some discussion with my main gaming partner, we've decided Earth Reborn doesn't have enough game to support 100 plays.

So we're going to play Trajan 100 times instead to see if trajan tile + military really is the best strategy!

Progress tracker: 5% complete

Thought this was a great idea when I stumbled across the thread a few days ago. Was thinking about doing this with Ascension because I love that game but noticed when I reviewed the thread again that there are now several people using that game so I decided to go with Shadow Era. I have been playing Shadow Era on my ipad for several months now and I am really enjoying the game. I preordered the physical game which was unvieled at Origins for the first time this week. I didn't get to attend Origions but I have been reading threads and watching videos of the unboxing and I am eagerly awaiting my game. I should have the physical copy in my hands within the next week or two according to their website. In the meantime I will continue my plays on the ipad. The cards on the ipad version and the print version are the same so the main difference when I start using the physical cards will be playing against another person rather than the AI. I will be playing with several different preconstructed decks as well as constructing one of my own. I will be experimenting with both human heroes and shadow heroes to see how the different abilities play out. I am also curious to see how the playing with the physical cards differs from the digital version and I am excited to teach the game to some friends and play it with them. I have not begun my log here on the boardgamegeek site yet but will shortly.
