The General

Website : http://www.avalonhill.com/

Magazines devoted to Avalon Hill games :

• The General (official)
• The Boardgamer (unofficial)

The General (1964-1998) was a bi-monthly periodical devoted to supporting Avalon Hill's line of wargames, with articles on game tactics, history, and industry news. It was the first professionally produced wargaming magazine for the nascent cardboard and hex-map wargaming hobby. Over the years the magazine was variously called The Avalon Hill General, Avalon Hill's General, The General Magazine, or simply General. With the sale of Avalon Hill to Hasbro in 1998 the magazine ceased. It's unofficial heir was Operations Magazine published by Multi-Man Publishing to support the line of Avalon Hill games that remained in print, but that too went out of print in 2010, replaced by Special Ops magazine in 2011.

InQuest

InQuest Gamer was a prominent monthly gaming magazine. Originally, the magazine was named InQuest and focused solely on trading card games; InQuest, along with its competitor Scrye, were the two major CCG magazines. The magazine was published by Wizard Press.

InQuest #0, the first issue, was published in April 1995. For issue #46 (February 1999), InQuest changed its name to InQuest Gamer (with Gamer in big text on the cover), clearly announcing that it was a magazine about games. Issue #53 made the InQuest title more prominent on the cover again and it had not been changed since then.

InQuest used a casual and sometimes humorous style that has been attributed as a reason for its early popularity. Typical content included news, strategy articles, a price guide for collectible games, and reference lists.

The magazine changed its focus over time to cover a wider range of games. Originally catering to fantasy CCGers, in the end it covered role-playing games, computer and video games, CCGs/TCGs, board games, and others.

Inquest Gamer ceased publication as of September 2007.

Plato Magazine

Website : www.plato-magazine.com

Plato is a Belgian paper magazine dealing exclusively with board games. It includes a goodie in each of issue and sometimes publishes complete games.

Ever since October of 2005, French-speaking gamers have been able to indulge in their second-favorite pastime : reading Plato, the magazine about the many and varied games that we all love. We published a FREE PDF which is a small sample of our work, just to give you a taste of what you could read every two months – not on a screen (how uncomfortable !), but on real paper… PEFC ! We are very serious about being environmentally responsible!

Plato is a magazine covering gaming in all its diversity. Our intention is to talk about gaming at an international level. Obviously, we will always go into detail about the new hotness ; however, we also won’t hesitate to enlighten you about obscure or less-recent products. Moreover, in addition to game reviews, Plato presents a rich array of topics for you to explore in our publications.

But above all else, Plato is also about tone and look : An irreverent tone, fun and amusing, a bit quirky at times – after all, we’re just talking about games here ! And a colorful, relaxed look, to make for really comfortable reading.

Working behind the scenes is a diverse team of thirty people, passionate about games, whose greatest pleasure is to transport you inside the world of gaming. Designers, illustrators, publishers, distributors, retailers… all will soon have more secrets to share with you. Welcome aboard !

Plato : what is it?
Of course, you know by now that Plato is your new favorite magazine, your friend for life. But why the name “ Plato ” ? It’s quite simple, really : In French, we pronounce “ plato ” the same way we pronounce “ plateau ” one meaning of which is “ gameboard ”. So, we chose the name as a trademark. In French, “ plato ” itself doesn’t mean anything ; it just sounds good. In English, Plato is a philosopher, but that has nothing to do with our Plato magazine, because in French, that Plato is called “ Platon ”. When we hear the title, it makes us think of a “ plateau ” so it doesn’t matter to us that anglophones reading Plato might be confused with Plato. Clear as mud ?

Plato Worldwide #1 will be available on September 2012, including a bonus card for Karnag.

SCRYE

(Scrye Collectible Card Game Checklist and Price Guide) is a discontinued gaming magazine that was published from 1994 to 2009. It was the longest-running periodical to have ever reported on the collectible card game hobby. It was also the leading print resource for secondary-market prices on Magic: The Gathering. JM White, publisher of the role-playing game magazine Cryptych, launched the magazine in June 1994 after being introduced to Magic by its publisher, Wizards of the Coast's Peter Adkison, in July 1993.

Initially created as a price guide for Magic: The Gathering cards, SCRYE also provided prices and strategy tips for the many other collectible and trading card games that followed. In the mid-1990s, SCRYE and InQuest were, by far, the two CCG magazines with the largest circulation.

Dragon

Tactical Studies Rules was formed in 1973 as a partnership between Gary Gygax and Don Kaye as a means to publish formally and sell the rules of Dungeons & Dragons, the first modern role-playing game. The partnership was subsequently joined by Brian Blume and (temporarily) by Dave Arneson.

In 1975 Don Kaye died, the partnership was dissolved and the remaining owners incorporated a new company TSR Hobbies, Inc..

In 1983, the company was split into four companies, TSR, Inc. (primary successor), TSR International, TSR Ventures and TSR Entertainment, Inc..

TSR, Inc. was purchased in 1997 by Wizards of the Coast, and finally, in 1999, this one was also purchased by Hasbro, Inc..

First logo of the company, during 1974-1979, was a symbol made by letters G and K for Gary Gygax and Don Kaye.
Dragon Publishing was the portion of TSR that published Dragon Magazine and related products, such as Dragontales, calendar's etc. Dragon Publishing was also the US distributor for The Wargamer and White Dwarf.
