Our 5th WBC has come and gone. While previously only attending Saturday/Sunday, this year Janet and I went for the entire year. We had a great time and had a lot of fun gaming. I hope to do it again next year if our schedules allow.

The WBC was held at the Lancaster Host. We also stayed there for the week. The hotel had some issues, but for the most part was a pleasant place to sleep and game.

I was able to play 18 unique games (for a total of 39 plays) from Monday through Sunday - some classics and some new to me.

Below is my list of games played (in play-count order from highest to lowest).

Our first stop at WBC this year was the demo of Innovations. I had heard of this card game before, but really didn't know the rules or what it was about.

Janet and I played in the mulligan round shortly after the demo. I utterly lost, but Janet was fairly close to besting an experienced player.

We enjoyed the game so much that we played it 3 more times during open gaming. Even with that practice, I was killed in round 1 of the tournament. Janet made it to round 2, but also lost. Still, I was impressed that she made a bit of a comeback. Her opponent had acquired 5 achievements while she had none, but the end score was 6 to 4.

If any of the games we played at WBC are on our to-get list before 2013, it will be this one I'm sure.

The second game we learned at WBC this year was a relative classic - Thurn & Taxis. I'm still not sure how exactly you're suppose to pronounce the name.

I was able to get in 5 games of this during the week - 2 in open gaming and 3 in the tournament. I got better through the 3 heats (4th place in my first game, 3 place in my second, and a 1st place win in my third tournament game). Unfortunately one win was not enough to advance to the semi-finals.

I really enjoyed the "set collection" mechanics of this game.

Settlers was my "team game" for Daybreak Gamers. Unfortunately, I sucked. I did not get a single win all week (even inthe one open gaming session I played). Heh, no big deal. On the plus side, Chad brought home the 5th place plaque for this event (down for 3rd last year).

WBC heat 1 - Tied for 3rd of 4
WBC heat 2 - Tied for 2nd of 4
WBC heat 3 - 3rd of 4

Despite not winning, I think these were three of the funnest games / most challenging games of Settlers I've played recently.

Probably the most interesting game I played at WBC was this one - which I am already quite familiar with. But someone had brought an extra-large homemade (printed) Battlestar Galactica board along with big, painted ships and characters. It made the game spectacular to play.

During the week I played two games on that board and one game one the regular board.

In the first game, I was a human and the humans lost (we were about to call the game due to time, but the cylons sent the death blow in time).
In the second game, I was a cylon and the humans won.
In the third game, I was a human and the humans won.

I taught this game to Janet in open gaming. I doubt it is ever a game we'd want to own, but it was a fun one to play a couple times. I think she won one game and I won the other two.

Neither of us would make very good spies...

If you go by rankings, then I guess this was my best tournament game this year. I made it to the finals and achieved 3rd place. Unfortunately this event is not one of the tournament events (only a trial event) and thus only has a first place plaque.

I guess what saddens me most is that Janet was not able to advance past the first round (after having won the event last year). I was hoping for an Ottey-versus-Ottey final.

WBC round 1 - 1st of 5 (11, 14, 15, 15, 18)
WBC semi-final - 2nd of 5 (6, 14, 15, 17, 20)
WBC final - 3rd of 6

Janet and I enjoy playing Dominion at home and on the iOS version. But we're by no means great at this game. So we did not go into this event thinking we'd win. And we were right - lol. The first round consisted of two games with the same table. Win one of those games and you advance. I got a 2nd and a 3rd. Still, both were fun games.

I am not a huge fan of Ra - but I thought I'd give it a shot in tournament (sometimes there is nothing better to play). In two 5-player games I placed 4th and 5th. I decided these scores were low enough that it was not worth me competing in the 3rd and 4th heats.

Janet advanced to the semi-finals where she placed 3rd at her table. I'm proud of her that she got that far - it is a tough game!

I played two games of Survive with a gentleman at open gaming. I discovered that I ought to get a little better at teaching games to people as I'm certain I missed a rule or two prior to beginning play. But all-in-all we enjoyed the games. He must have enjoyed it since he asked to play a second time.

It was actually my first experience with setting up a board and then displaying the "I'm looking for someone to play with" signpost. Sitting and waiting felt kind of awkward... Not sure I'll ever do that again.

You know it is going to be "one of those games" when you sit down and someone else at the table opens up their padded chest of silver trains that he won at a previous Ticket to Ride championship... This was a brutal game where two of the players made 45-point links (one with 3 6-train links in the north, and one with 3 6-train links in the south). My final score was around 76, while the other three were around the 110s.

My second game was much better - playing with a dad, his son and their second cousin. She was somewhat distracted by various phone calls as well as trying to remember the rules to the game. My trains alone tallied above my score from the previous game. Adding in my 6 tickets, I totaled around 145 points.

With the Settlers heats going on at the same time, I wasn't able to play in the third heat of Ticket to Ride. I ought to have stopped by the semi-finals Sunday morning to see if I possibly advanced (possible due to low Sunday attendance) but instead opted to play Trans America.

Nick taught me this one during open gaming. I like the dice mechanic (reminds me of the newer Troyes) as well as the space theme. I would definitely give this one another try sometime.

I had no intentions of playing this game since I hoped to be in the latter rounds of Settlers. But since I did not advance and I was having problems finding a game to play at open gaming, Chad talked me into playing the mulligan round. There were no expansions being used, so at least my loss was fairly quick. I was in 3rd place out of four at my table.

Chad advanced to the second round but not further.

Played this for the fist time during heat 1 of the WBC tournament and placed 4th in that game. I decided to not try playing another tournament heat. I think there was a lot of rules confusion between the GM as well as people at the table. I would like to try this game again - but hopefully in a more relaxed atmosphere.

I was not sure what to expect with this game. I know the theme of the regular "Ra" game, and I was hoping the dice made the game a bit more enjoyable. It turns out to be a combination of Ra (both with theme and the three epochs) and Yahtzee (with dice combos). That may sound terrible, but I think it actually works pretty well. I would play this one again in the future.
