WBC 2012 was my third year at the con. Here's my recap of last year: WBC 2011 Games Played

I'm local to the Lancaster area and I have three friends who also attended the for the week. We all had a few tournaments we like to play, and we throw together a team for the heck of it, but mostly we like to open game. Last year there were quite a few library games we wanted to try but this year we used a lot of our time games we own but don't get to play often enough. We have two other friends who joined us for the weekend as well.

This year I got 53 total plays of 30 different games in six days. I only played in 7 tournaments, and only 9 games that were new to me. This geek list sums it all up.

With my friend Ken not arriving until Tuesday, Erik, Dusty and I focused on some 3p games on Monday. Dusty pulled this out, translated "One Eye" I believe. This is a bit set collection and resource management, a solid game without too much depth.

I've been anxious to get this and play it for quite some time. I finally bought it the week before the con and convinced my friends to play. I liked it 3p but was anxious to play it again with more players. It took us about 4 hours for our first play.

After the usual one-meal-a-day during WBC (a quick trip to Red Robin) we got out Alien Frontiers with the new expansion Dusty and I Kickstarted, Factions, and the Upgrade Pack. We also got our our new Pyramid game timer, an excellent addition to our games. The timer keeps things moving even without any penalties for slow play.

Anyway, We hoped Factions would solve our one problem with the game, no hidden VPs. Our games usually broke down in the late stages as everybody gangs up on the guy most likely to win on his next turn, and by the time he plays, he can no longer win so he beats up the next guy, et cetera. The agenda cards should help but most of ours got scored during the game as players met the in-game conditions, so we had the same problem.

We played a second game of this as we were anxious to try out more of the Factions. They do seem to open up the board, possibly a bit too much with extra places to dock ships.

Dusty and I got there early Tuesday to hit the auction store early. He picked a couple things up but I didn't see anything I wanted. I almost picked up Infiltration (I love Dominion and like Kingdom Builder so I'm drawn to any Donald X game) but passed. I did sell off 8 games and made enough money to cover the convention costs and a bit more which is good.

Anyway with Erik and Ken showing up a bit later we killed some time with a game of Balloon Cup. I drew pretty much every 1 and 13 in the deck so Dusty never stood a chance!

Erik and Ken arrived, with Erik planning to spend part of the day in the Juniors' Room with his son. Ken, Dusty, and I pulled Lancaster out of the library and got about a turn or so into the game when we were asked to give the game up for the demo which was about to start! No idea why they didn't just pull it out in the morning but since we only had about 20 minutes invested it wasn't too bad.

It was great to see the production version of this in the library. Dusty, Andrew and I got to play a prototype last year. The finished version looks good, and there was a tweak that we suggested when we played it last year which was neat. Cool game, but all the high-quality cardboard dives up the price which will probably keep me from pulling the trigger on this.

I've had this on preorder for a couple months and have been anxious to play it. The sampler guy (sorry, I don't know his name) had a copy and was willing to let us play it, probably because I whined about having to give up Lancaster earlier. Anyway, he was very gracious and even taught us the game, which we played three-player (Dusty, Ken, and me). I loved it. I felt like I was way behind early without plutonium or uranium, so I loaded up on fighters and bombers and crushed my opponents' buildings. I got a cheap bomb tested then got two others done pretty quickly to get to exactly 60 and squeak out a win just before Ken was going to end it on his next turn!

Dusty picked this up a couple weeks ago and it has gotten several plays already. I'm not sure why it is such a hit with our group but it is a short fun game where you roll dice to determine how much cargo you get, then quickly grab a truck tile that can only hold cargo in a certain 3D space. Then each player packs their "truck" optimally, losing points for cargo that doesn't fit and for wasted space. It's a ten-minute game and gets multiple plays. Dusty, Ken, Erik and I got three plays in quick succession.

With about an hour until the Dominant Species heat I wanted to play in at 8, we broke out D-Day Dice. Dusty Kickstarted it and we played it a couple times the week before WBC. It was Ken's first play and it is just way too easy with multiple players. I did have to bail partway through to get to DS on time but they managed my unit to victory.

I wrapped up my Tuesday by becoming the first member of my little group to play a game in the intimidating Lampeter Room. (Fortunately this was before the AC/humidity issues hit later in the week and turned it into a swamp.) I believe there were about 5 games in this heat, and I played in a five-player game.

I played as the Reptiles and things went fairly well for me, but I had several moments where I realized three minutes too late that I didn't plan appropriately for something I should have foreseen. The game as a whole was quite interesting. The amphibian player was not only "Blight"ed right off the map completely on the first turn, but started the second turn without a water element on the board and no other elements on his card! He rallied quite well to finish 2nd. The other thing that seemed amazing to the GM was the amount of carnage we had. In 5 players we each started with 40 (39) cubes, or 195 total, and at game end, 115 had been eliminated. I finished last but just about 40 points behind the leader and 2 points behind 4th.

I stayed at home Wednesday morning to get a little work done then made it to the Host in time for the noon heat of Galaxy Trucker. This game is always a blast. Ken and I played at the same table without any expansions which is a little boring. I believe the winner scored about 90, and I was 3rd with about 60.

Erik & Dusty's table was much more interesting. They played the expansion, plus Rough Roads I think, and had five players. The GM was at their table, along with one quite unhappy guy. As I understand it, there was a point where Erik had a choice who to attack (Space Billiards?) and the grumpy guy wanted Erik to attack one player, but Erik attacked somebody else. It seemed this guy wouldn't let it go for the last 15 or 20 minutes of the game and made for an unpleasant experience for all. When the scores were totaled up it turned out he was wrong all along about who the leader was and who should have been targeted, but the facts didn't slow him down. In tournaments with multiplayer games, these things are going to happen, where a player makes a decision that hurts you and helps somebody else. Most gamers accept that, but not this guy.

Regardless, GT is always good fun and it would get another play from me later in the week.

With a little time to fill before the Agricola heat at 3 PM Wednesday, Ken, Dusty, and I gave this a try. I wanted to like this game but there just doesn't seem to be anything to it. Just draw some cards, roll some dice, then take the actions on the dice to try to collect sets. Almost Kickstarted this last year but I'm glad I didn't.

I enjoy Agricola but I'm not that good at it. I'm not sure why; I think I usually try to do too much. That's what happened in this heat. For a long stretch in the mid-game, I had four family members, one opponent had three, and the other two players had two each. I still screwed it up though, running out of time to do both renovations (I had six rooms) and not getting to use most of my other farm spaces. I finished second, but a good bit behind the leader, another local guy named Rich.

We enjoyed this play. It seems like it will really shine in a 4- or 5-player game. I edged out Dusty for the win in this one.

We got a full play in this time. The game seemed interesting in the middle phase as we had enough bidding cubes and squires to make key laws and counties contentious. But in the final 1 or 2 turns it seemed there were a lot of useless spots to play knights. Maybe it was groupthink and we were missing something or maybe it just doesn't click with 3 players but either way I don't think any of us were anxious for another play. However I did extend my open gaming win streak to 3!
