There are a lot of reasons why people buy games. I tend to think that most of my reasons are good ones (I am spending hard earned $$$ after all).

It just dawned on me, however, that in the batch of games from my latest purchase, I bought one of the games for the absolute stupidest reason. This is the inspiration for the list and #1 below.

The game might be good or bad, but it's the REASON that I care about. What's the stupidest reason you ever bought a game?

At my first time at the Gathering this year, I enjoyed looking at the enormous prize table like everyone else, imagining what it would be like to get first pick (which requires winning the tournament with the largest participation, or multiple tournaments, etc.--I'm not sure what the exact system is). Before the actual selection, everyone walks around, making futile lists of what they would pick, but of course most of what they really want is gone by the time they get a pick (all attendees get picked in random order after the tournament winners pick). Things like the $350 3D Settlers chest, and hard-to-find collector's games tended to top people's lists.

Suffice it to say that I didn't get first pick, or anything near it. But like everyone else, I sat around watching with rapt attention as the first pick was made (I forget who it was, but they had been to the Gathering many times before). Out of the 600+ games on the table, spanning the history and genres of boardgaming, which would be the most desirable game of all???

When the first pick was made, there was a bit of a hushed confusion over the room. The first pick was...

Lexio???

That's right. The game from Korea that most people hadn't even heard of. Who else had that on the top of their list??? After the prize selection was done, I (along with apparently everyone else) asked him why he picked Lexio. His answer was simple: "because I wanted it".

I had no idea what it's about, how many players it plays, how long it takes, how it's rated, etc. But I'm sorry, if it's good enough for the #1 pick at the Gathering, it's good enough for me. I saw the bits, which were very nice, which didn't hurt. I had to have it!

After getting it and reading the rules, I realize that it's very similar to Tichu, minus teams and the special cards, with a fairly interesting scoring system instead (essentially everyone is penalized by how much they "didn't" go out, relative to others).

Incidentally, it comes in both white and black editions. I think black is much cooler, which is what I got. I found it for $25 at http://BoardsAndBits.com.

I will bite:

Reason: Just because I haven't gotten anything in a while and I am feeling the need to read some new rules but feel some sort of OWNERSHIP in those rules.

I haven't purchased a new game since February and with games like Goa, El Grande, and of course TEMPUS constantly getting pushed back when my mind had settled on HAVING something by now SOMETHING had to be purchased and this is the one, along with Power Grid (which at least I have played before).

No other excuse - just because.

I bought the expansion set for Pitch Car in order to get free shipping. Yep, that's right I spent $42 to save $10. I'm not entirely sure how I put this logic together, but there I was on Thought hammer thinking "Hey. If I also pick up the expansion to Pitch Car I'll cross the $100 mark and get free shipping." And then I just did it. Some times I just amaze myself.

To get the prettier box and To get the map in color

I had the original Metagaming ogre in the plastic bag. It was a fun game.

Then they rereleased it in a cardboard box. Ooooo! A nice cardboard box! I had to have it. So I bought it. Again.

Then, Steve Jackson games released it in a PLASTIC box, with a COLOR map! Well, it may be the same dang game I have two copies of already, but wow that color map would be the spiffiest.

So I bought Ogre three times, once to get a cardboard box, once to get a map that was in color. I'm not sure which one was the stupider reason to buy a game, but they're both pretty well up there.

I bought my first decks because it was recommended by a fellow gamer as a good, short little game. I bought my initial decks and played the game. It wasn't great, but it seemed okay for a short game (it took longer to put the decks together than it did to play several games).

Then my collector gene kicked in and before I knew it, I had bought them all, and with all its shortcomings, I'm eagerly awaiting the sixth set.

Aren't you glad you're not a completist? I do this with D&D and GURPS too.

Because it was on sale for "only" $50, shipping extra. Considering the original list price for the 3D copy of this sucker was $120, it was a massive price change. Boulder Games, obviously knowing things about the game I didn't know, cut the price way down to clear it out of their inventory. I bit. Now it's a toy in my son's room. As far as game play, the only game I rate lower than this one is Fluxx.

I have plenty of purchases I made "because I saw it and it looked cool", or "knizia made this? really?" or something equally lame. Heck, I have over 30 games in my house that are still shrinkwrapped.

But the lamest purchase I ever made was this one. For starters, I had already gotten to play it and HATED it. The episode still ranks as one of my worst gaming experiences ever. I was bored out of my skull, the people I played with were uber-PC so off-color-joke-me became unpopular quickly (yes, I know, my fault), and to top it off, it was six precious hours in a single day at a con, something that I don't get to do often and to which I got special dispensation from the wife to attent.

And yet, the stupid thing pops up on the B&N 50% off sale and, the slobbering idiot that I am, I go and pick it up. I even went ahead and spent another $25 on the B&N card figuring I'd get it paid back quickly enough with this to start with - a game I never wanted in the first place!

I got it home, put it up on the highest shelf, and continued to develop absolutely zero interest in looking at it any further.

The only saving grace was that once I got out of my stupor, I listed it here on the geek and resold it, recouping my cost. But I still qualify as "stupid" on my list for buying it in the first place.

The Troisdorf edition of Alhambra, because it had a tile with the Queen Games building on it.

The Disney version of Abalone, the stalemate game I already had 2 copies of (one for replacement marbles) and don't even particularly enjoy, imported from France, because I was curious what Disney marbles would look like. Only to be followed a few weeks later by the numbered designer's edition, because I am a sucker, it was made of wood, and had a couple of signatures on a bit of paper.

A replica of the vintage "Grand Jeu de la Tour Eiffel" because it had a picture of the Eiffel tower on the board. Add to that anything set in Paris. Or, even better, set in Paris and with bicycles.

"Boule" because a game about Jeux de Boules was just what my sports-games collection was missing.

And an unhealthy habit of filling any box up to 20kgs to save on postage when it ships from Germany. We're not talking adding one game here. Sometimes it is added to one game!

A chess board with the same line of figures used for "Sheer Panic", to get an extra 32 cute-looking sheep (including a few different ones) so we could run amock with home-made variants for an even larger flock.

Do I need to go on? Yup, I need help....

Because it was pretty. Really. I love the way the game looks when it's all set up. The colors of the board are beautiful and the pieces just look so striking in contrast. This is just a gorgeous piece of design.

Here's a short list of others I bought fully or partially because I thought they were pretty.

Mystery of the Abbey - great looking board
Web of Power - great colors
San Marco/Torres/Big Top - same artist did these boards
Wise and Otherwise - very striking look for a party game

I could go on...

Bought this three times on in a week.
First I bought the eon version plus expansion 2 on ebay then I found the eon version again on BGG-market with expansion 1,2,3. Hurrah! Hmm, there is a LOT of expansions I need to get the eon game complete... Maybe its simpler with the Mayfair version. Found simply cosmic and more cosmic encounter on a trade list on BGG and traded those for my napoleonic wars (damn its costly to send games abroad..).
Now I only NEED to get the base game of cosmic from Mayfair. Hope I have the cash :-(

I bought this because it wasn't listed in the BGG database. I also hoped that it would be a good game for my daughter. I lost on both counts. I added it to the database, only to have my entry denied because someone else had added it a day or two before I did and their entry was not approved when I submitted mine, so I didn't see that it had actually already been submitted. The game also is bad enough that even my three-year-old generally prefers to play other things.
