There are a lot of reasons why people buy games. I tend to think that most of my reasons are good ones (I am spending hard earned $$$ after all).

It just dawned on me, however, that in the batch of games from my latest purchase, I bought one of the games for the absolute stupidest reason. This is the inspiration for the list and #1 below.

The game might be good or bad, but it's the REASON that I care about. What's the stupidest reason you ever bought a game?

I bought this game for one reason only, the die. It is numbered in binary. Check out the image, it is in the lower right corner.

Thanks Frank!

Reason: Because I didn't want to get it as a gift.

I had received the main game plus the first expansion as gifts on two seperate occasions, and while I enjoy them well enough, the thought of getting the 3rd expansion as a gift instead of something *new* was *way* too much to take. So I just bought it.

I haven't bought the 4th edition yet but I will...

I enjoy wargames, especially WWII themed ones, but except for the person who introduced me to them (just before I moved 2000 miles away from him), I have never had a friend who also plays them. So I set up a game and play it through solo.

I was thrilled to get Ambush! because that was right up my alley: WWII solo wargame, and one that has a good reputation.

Then I was at a game convention, and saw that they had Shell Shock! How cool is that? I get all the game goodness of Ambush!, but this is for two players. I happily bought the game, and was still happy with my purchase when I got home.

As I was showing my wife all the goodies I came home with, it suddenly hit me. I don't need a two-player Ambush! I like Ambush! because I don't have a 2nd player.

Stupid, stupid, stupid....

I don't know where that bit of amnesia came from, but the game's been in my garage ever since, untouched. I should really look into selling or trading it.

Recommendations are like @$$#@!$, everyone has one...

Originally heard about it on the Dice Tower, then read the ratings where the game was compared over and over with just about the second coming of the Messiah.

I know I'm in the minority here, but you are very very very bad people, and this is a very very very bad game, IMO.

I hope the bird in that picture unleashed some white magic right after that photo was taken...

Because it was cheap.

I held back on this one, assuming that surely someone else would add this reason.

I found this for $10 online and added it to my order just because it seemed cheap. I have no intention of ever opening it. I just noticed, however, that there is no image of the English cover. Maybe I can get a GG out of it and all is not lost. :-)

Needless to say, I didn't repeat that error with Warcraft (not World of Warcraft) or Sid Meyer's Civilization.

BECAUSE THE AUCTIONEER'S DESCRIPTION MADE ME DO IT!!!

Some time in the late '80s this came up in a game auction, and the auctioneer did something unusual: He opened the box, took out the board, and explained the workings of the game.
The board starts off as you see in the picture. However, the top part depicting the Titanic is movable; certain die rolls cause the good ship to begin to nose down. As the ship sinks the players run around gathering passengers and herding them up to the lifeboats. The lifeboats are launched, Titanic continues sinking, and then, just as the ship disappears beneath the waves, off on the far horizon--up pops the Carpathia!!
For some reason I just loved the whole concept and wound up paying six dollars for an incomplete(missing one lifeboat, appropreately enough)copy of this game which, after one playing, still resides somewhere in my attic far out of Robert Ballard's reach.

There was a FLGS with a massive liquidation sale. I bought waaaay too much stuff, becuase after one big bag full of stuff, additional items just didn't seem to matter.

I bought both this and the expansion and have still played neither.

Gotta' Catch them all...

I have all the games in the Gipf Project, and got the Gipf Project Set 1 as a gift, so I HAVE to have set 2!!!

But I don't play with potentials, the idea of stopping one game to play another game and have the results of that game marginally impact the first game, well just seems extraneous to me. Why not play one, then the other, they're both excellent games on thier own merits...

...maybe I need to give the idea a second chance.

Before I had tried any CheapAss games, I decided to try one, but rather than just trying one, I discovered that on the CheapAss website they had a bundle which included: Lord of The Fries, Light Speed, Steam Tunnel, Freeloader, and maybe one more--I forget. So I bought the bundle.

Note to self: one fifth of a game times five does not equal one good game.

...because I was a dumbass.

I owned the original Settlers and we liked it (what were we thinking?). Bought the 5/6 player expansion (still in German) and we disliked it because that mid-phase after each person's turn was painful.

But then...

Mayfair came out with the game so I purchased two. Yes, two! Why? So I could put them together and make for an 8-player game. I even made a few color copies of extra tiles so that I could make everything work out.

But then...

Mayfair came out with an edition with different colored pieces, which would make my plan even better.

SO I BOUGHT ANOTHER!

Oh the humanity.
