There are a lot of reasons why people buy games. I tend to think that most of my reasons are good ones (I am spending hard earned $$$ after all).

It just dawned on me, however, that in the batch of games from my latest purchase, I bought one of the games for the absolute stupidest reason. This is the inspiration for the list and #1 below.

The game might be good or bad, but it's the REASON that I care about. What's the stupidest reason you ever bought a game?

Treebeard! If the Deluxe version didn't have Treebeard, I would have purchased the cheaper original version.

They just had to go and put him on the back of Boromir, those rats.

83. Board Game: World in Flames [Average Rating:7.45 Overall Rank:613]
I suppose a person could think of many stupid reasons to buy Games of World in Flames--from the stereotypical "I wanted to see what it looked like" to "I wanted to see if it would fit in my apartment" (In case you are tempted, the answer is "no.") My stupidest reason for buying a copy of World in Flames Classic was that I didn't want to bother resorting the counter sets. With over 6000 counters, it takes hours to make sure they are all there. When I was asked to teach the game to someone new, it was much more efficient to simply pick up a Classic set on eBay than to go through each counter and either keep it or get rid of it. And of course, the teaching game only lasted about 6 turns, so now I have two sets to sort! Arrrggghhhhh!

Cool box cover.

It was 1968 and I was 13, in the dept store looking for a new game. I knew there had to be something out there better than Risk and Battlecry, etc. They had these two AH games, 1914 and Afrika Korps. The AK box was ugly, so I bought the one with a cool box.

Then I got it home. Hey, where are the pieces? You mean these pieces of cardboard are the pieces? wtf? I don't understand these rules. None of my friends will even touch this game.

Fortunately, the catalog showed that there were other wargames available, and I had set my feet on the path to wargame geekdom.

My spouse and I started buying a Monopoly set for each country we visited on our travels. Sort of as a memento of the country, and there were different copies being manufactured for each country, often with different box sizes. I was also curious to see if tehy varied the rules (they dont, it is either English or US version).

Seemed a fun idea at the time. But...
- the games were awkward to ship back
- they take up a lot of room
- when our friends noticed, THEY started buying us Monopoly sets for countries tehy had visited, and presenting them to us!
- having games in several different languages that you cant speak isnt very practical.
- Monopoly is actually a rubbish game and is very rarely played in our house (tho AntiMonopoly turned out even worse!)
- games in foreign languages dont sell well, so I am not able to offload them at bring and buys, and throwing out boardgames is... well... you just dont do it.

For the box.

I've bought this game three times: once with the base game, after it was reissued,; once, because I found it on sale and figured I could trade it for something else; and I just purchased a copy from FFG's stock sale, so I could have the box.

I think that last reason is the dumbest of all.

Because the game I wanted (Illuminati or Illuminati: Deluxe) was out of print at the time, and the CCG version seemed like the next best thing. I had very little CCG experience, and at the time, I knew nothing about buying games anywhere except in a store or through the publisher. And I had no idea that sometimes, game companies republish their own games...

or that out-of-print games could be purchased on eBay or BGG.

Because I thought it was older than me....

There were actually two different "old" games in the shop that day for $5 and $5.50 and I took both. They were like the copy of Stocks and Bonds or Monopoly or Risk that have been worn down by the shelf-wear of your closet or bookshelf.

I figured, "That guy must've played it a lot, so it must be pretty good!" The game does look good, and has a great little book of the adaptation and history of the theme. But, MY reasons for buying it were the dumbest.

My girlfriend at the time and I decided it would be fun to play a boardgame but we didn't have any. So, off to Toy R Us. It's 10pm on a weeknight when we get there. We spend 20 minutes debating the merits of RISK Lord of the Rings edition versus some other game I have since forgotten, and the spirit of compromise bought this game, which neither of us wanted. It must have been after 11 when we got home. I started reading the rules and punching out 10,000 cardboard bits and she instantly fell asleep. Never played it. Looks god awful. I think it went to Goodwill a while back.

So I somehow came across Pirates & Plunder, and the rules looked interesting. I didn't have a Carcassone game at the time (I have Ark of the Covenant now), and because it was P&P, I decided to try it. It was fun enough. Then I saw some comments saying that people used the ships for Tongiaki to play this one. So I bought Tongiaki for the ships!

Granted, I ended up liking Tongiaki also (you just can't take it TOO seriously, as it's very chaotic), but I originally bought it to salvage it's pieces for another game. (I got it cheap from an online store, so it wouldn't have been a major waste even if I'd hated it though).

I bought it for not one, but two, yes TWO stupid reasons. One was that it was only a few bucks, so I figured what the heck, why not? Two was that it reminded me of work, since I worked at a customer service phone center.

Unfortunately, it ended up reminding me of work in all the bad ways - repetitive, boring, and soul crushing. Ugh. It now sits on my shelf of shame.

this is probably been done plenty of times, and even though it wasn't me I had a mate buy a game twice to save postage.

Me to Friend #1: T&E is so cool, I think it'll become my favourite game of all time.
Friend #1: I'm ordering it.
(next day)
Friend #1 to friend #2 walking by: Hey, I'm buying T&E, wanna buy a copy to share the postage
Friend #2: OK.

So a week later there's three copies between the 3 of us.
Friend #1 has never played his copy (although his wife tells me she pulled it out and played with a couple of their grandkids)

Luckily Friend #2 came to his senses and told me about it and I found a great trade for Pandemic + the expansion.

So all ended well enough.

For those interested and still reading, the game was AUD$65 and the postage was a fixed $10. So they split the $10 postage (and we paid about that to send one copy to Sydney in the later trade) .... economists they are not!!
