I will let others comment on whether they enjoyed the game or not.

Scores:

1. James 49
2. Andrew-00 45
3. Paul 33
4. Phil* 32
5. Farro* 20

My only comments for now...

Rules explanation took a long time - how to simplify?
Game ran much longer than expected owing to a lot of tit-for-tat play (should I try to restrict this, or is this the fun part of the game?)
Not all the rules are in the rule book!

Outcome was in the balance right to the very end
All five players appeared engaged throughout
There were no important rules ambiguities

A fun filler to round out the evening. This was easy for newbies Phil and Farro to learn and appealed particularly to Farro's gambling instincts.

Scores:

1. James 31
2. Farro* 29
3. Phil* 27
4. Andrew 26
5. Paul 31 18

Jeff said he was keen to learn and play 'Glory to Rome' so we played 'Reef Encounter' . A 4-player game me, Andy B2, Adam and Jeff, with the game being new to the latter two.

Although the mechanics of this are fairly simple there is a lot of unique facets to the game and what the various playing pieces do is not obvious so rules explanation took a little while - although not as long as for 'Hold the Front Page' .

I either do very well at this or completely bomb - tonight fell in the latter category which seems to coincide with when I have to explain the game. My initial moves were more focussed on messing with Andy than with establishing potential groups to grow and I just never really got going. It was quite a while before anyone actually consumed any groups in the game but Adam broke the spell and then the game moved quite swiftly through to the finale with all of the dominance tiles being locked, ending the game with several of us not having consumed all of our shrimps.

I nearly got moving in the mid game when on two occasions I had good moves lined up, only for the player before me inadvertently scuppering them. Despite it being his first game Jeff deftly deployed his polyps, manipulated his algae cylinders and was most efficient with his larva cubes -

Jeff 51 [7.5]
Andy B2 39 [8.75]
Adam 27 [7.5]
Gordon 18 [8.5] blush

This play of 'Reef' definitely confirmed for me that 3 players is the sweet spot. With 4 it just plays a bit too long and too much changes between your turns to be able to plan ahead with much confidence. I would rate the game a 9 with 3 and 8 with 4.

Having stuffed his parrot fish, Jeff departed and Adam was about to follow suit until I managed to convince him to stay and play a game of Doctor Who.

We'd all played before, and two of us with the right rules, so we were straight in.

I really like this - for a simple card game you have a lot of options and decisions to make on each turn. Attack or defence strategies seem well balanced and the theme is actually pretty well done.

1st Gordon 32 [7.5]
2nd Andy B2 23 [7]
3rd Adam 14 [7]
