I'll use this one cause it hasn't been posted. My dad was a gamer of sorts, and he had a bunch of AH games, Luftwaffe, Kingmaker, and Rail Baron. They were all my dad's games but I loved them a lot. When I was younger he would play a lot of them solo and I would watch. I couldn't wait till I was old enough to play with him. 1776 was the first one that he let me play with him, even though Kingmaker quickly became my favorite (which we didn't get to play very often, my mom didn't like it, the only time my dad even punched her, on the arm, was playing it, she allied with anyother player to wipe him out ).
I've eventually got my own copies of Luftwaffe, Kingmaker and Rail Baron plus many more but I never got 1776. I had been considering getting it lately but my mom mentioned the last time I talked to her that my dad was going to send me his old copy, which made me really happy. Hopefully it will see some play time soon.

I bought 1914 while living in Hawaii. I see the game was made in 1968. That means I am . . . how old??! Holy Doodle. I was captured by the cover on the box. Did I understand the game when I first bought it? I wasn't that old--sheesh! The wargame bug bit me and I have been a wargamer ever since. Sigh.

Acquire required some work to finally convince our friends to try something else. (see Rail Baron comments). And yes I still have both the Rail Baron and Acquire Games and you certainly can tell that they both were played often.

I'm surprised that I'm the only one to start off with ASL, but there it is. I was in junior high and a friend of mine happened to pick up a copy of Diplomacy. While we were figuring that one out, I browsed the AH catalogue. ASL had just come out and it was pitched as "The Ultimate Wargame." The ultimate wargame sounded pretty good to me, so I scraped up the money and went ahead and bought both the ASL rulebook and Beyond Valor. I spent the next week or two grappling with the rulebook and trying to get through the first BV scenario (I was none too excited about starting off with the Finns), but I couldn't make heads or tails of it. With great reluctance I had to admit that I was defeated, so I went back to the game store and picked up a copy of basic Squad Leader. The funny thing was that ASL actually helped me to understand SL very quickly, so that I was able to get through the programmed instructions and play all the scenarios in short order. To this day I still prefer basic Squad Leader, but it was ASL that got me going.

I am not really sure which is the first (it has been almost 40 years, after all), but I am guessing this one. I am not counting the several 3M bookshelf games I certainly owned before this, since they were not Avalon Hill at the time. Kriegspiel and Word Power are the games which might possibly have been acquired sooner. When I went off to college a friend and I also bought the play by mail sheets, but I don't think we got very far with that.

I still own it, but it is available for trade. War games are not really my thing.

Finally, I had been a wargamer for quite sometime, playing games with my friend and neighbor. He owned all the games that we played and we always played at his house. Well I finally buy my first wargame. (The first of very very many AH wargames). My wife to be and I had just got a new appartment and there was no furniture in the huge living room so the game wound up being set up on the empty hardwood living room floor. She looked at the game and the amount of room it was taking up and said "My new living room couch will be going right there so you have to move it. And by the way I don't think I like war games so don't ask! I didn't! We played Rail Baron and Acquire with our friends and I continued to play wargames with my friend, at his house on fewer occasions than I did before! And yes I still have this game also. And my wife turned out to be a pretty avid gamer but alas not wargamer!

It must have been good, because, I sadly own over 50% of this list of AH games, although, not all AH versions.

My brother still has our copy.

This is the game _I_ think of as my first owned AH game. We'd tried Jutland, and Blitzkrieg. This game was at the store - why not? But I only paid for half.

(First mistake. It was already 5 PM on Saturday!)

Took it to my buddy's house, opened it up, started reading rules. (Mistake # 2: At the time, ANZIO was one of the most complex games in wargaming! One of the first with step losses, complex map, and a _long_ game. What did we know? Somewhere around 7 or so, we were set up and moving. Played until after 1 AM and I said "How do you win this game?"

Realized it would be a LONG time before we finished!! I went home, thinking we'd finish the next day! WRONG! As much as I loved board wargames, he hated them! He'd given it away by the time I got back!

So - I don't think I can say this is the first AH game I 'owned' since I never actually possessed it!

This is one of the first of the few AH games I I own that I purchased. I didn't really get into AH games as collectible items while they were still making them, and now attempting to purchase them can be pretty expensive.

This is one of the few that I thought worthy of purchasing after the fact. Our gaming group still gets plenty of enjoyment out of this one and can easily fit in during our gaming days.

First Avalon Hill title I bought. Got it May 1991. Has been played most years since then. This year and last it's got loads more play by being part of a couple of PBEM Bomber wings, (400th BS 10th BW & 88th BG! Brings the game to life knowing you're not just flying on your own...you're with a whole flight of B17's. Recommended!

Bismarck was actually my older brother's first wargame, but it was the first wargame I ever played. It was in a rather large box (larger than AH's other wargames of the time), but was fairly easy for a 6-8 year old to play. I still have this game, but time has not been kind to it at all.

Bought this in 1971 in a Ben Franklin store in Gas City, IN. It was sitting on a top shelf, and was covered with dust. It looked like it had been there for several years. I looked inside and was fascinated. I had never seen a wargame before. I bought it for $8 and ended up hooked. I ended up buying every strategic level WWII game Avalon Hill made, then started collecting SPI. I still have it and all the others as well

I'm pretty certain that Circus Maximus was my first Avalon Hill game. I probably bought it in 1980.

It was much different from games that I had played prior to this, and I thought it was a blast. Still do.

I still own this game (and that will ALWAYS be the case), although it's been several years since I last played my copy. From time to time I'll play it at a game convention, using a giant board and using miniature chariots instead of the cardboard chits.
