Help me BGG!

If the Boardgamegeek users and parents have taught me anything over the years it's that all children are of "above average" intelligence and have advanced development for their years.

I have read many threads asking for gaming suggestions for "above average 6 year olds who ply Agricola but struggle a little with the complex deck" or "my four year old just beat me at Go".

This sounded wonderful, so recently I have taken my 10 week old daughter, propped her up (she still can't sit up properly by herself - I will be speaking to my doctor about this) and played a series of games against her.

Below are my experiences and I am worried that she just isn't measuring up to the Boardgamegeek norm.

What can I do?

I started easy with a BGG child-classic Carcassonne. I decided to ignore field scoring for our first game.

OUTCOME: She dribbled a little.

I was worried that perhaps she just hasn't been finding the theme interesting enough. I guess making fields and laying train routes isn't the most exciting, so I thought her mind might fit perfectly with Middle Earth.

I'm really worried now. Nothing is working and I can't understand why not. Maybe she's just really snobby about what she plays and will only play the top rated game? Well I've got it so that was easy enough to set up.

I decided to let her play as the Soviets as they have an easier chance for an early win. Only seemed fair because I've played it before.

Most of the games you've tried tend to load on nonverbal IQ - problem-solving, completing new tasks quickly, etc.

Have you considered that maybe your child's strength lies in the more verbal and social areas of intellectual functioning? Maybe she reads people well, knows how to communicate effectively (as she did by pooping during Agricola), and has an innate grasp of game theory.

I'd recommend testing this out with a light game of Die Macher, where you just might find that your child is destined to be a boss-style politico (God forbid).

And if she starts to show signs of fatigue during the 240 minute playing time, I wouldn't bite - she might just be looking for a subtle edge.

It may be her opposition. My daughter tends to hold back because she is worried about embarrassing me, but she is merciless in matches against Pooh Bear.

See that Queen's Pawn opening? I think Pooh was expecting the Ruy Lopez, as his usual opponent was Bobby Fischer. Pooh would often get so paralyzed with fear trying to come up with a sound response, that he would lose matches to her when his clock ran out . . .

Hey, you should try "Kids of Catan". This is a great gateway game for the under 2 set, as I found when our family got a copy as a gift. It has the following wonderful characteristics:

1) Way over produced, wooden buildings and spinners, and dice, Oh My! The box can even be used as a base with the appropriate colors on the side! (Although the Blue and Red are together, and my son who always plays red never likes to sit next to my daughter who always plays blue!. Maybe a box expansion is needed with different placing of colors?).

2) Wonderful little wooden resources so your tiny hands dont have to hold cards. The buildings are amazingly diverse with no reason other that giving your kids yet another thinkg to fight over. The red roofs are also quite tasty (as I have been told), but can be hard to replace when they are chewed off of the buildings and hidden with the Legos.

3) Amazingly profitable price for a game that should cost half as much. This is a great gateway to the world of over-priced, over-produced games.

4) Rules so simple that any child can follow them. Or not. Actually, the game is completely random and requires no skills other that the ability to count to three, and recognize the three resources. This little bonus will give the child the gateway experience of learning how to work with rules modifications, as any adult playing this more than twice will want to dream of SOME way of making it an ACTUAL GAME! It has the benifit of being as challenging as "Chutes and Ladders", but without the need to count beyond 3.

5) The introduction of the theory that "bad things happen" in a kind and gentle way, as Eric the "Bully" takes one resource out of your wagon. This introduces children to adversity as a result of the game, and not as the result of another player, so that you can be cut-throat in later games and claim that it is "just the way the game is played".

6) Introduce the young genius to the concept that a cube has 3 sides. All the dice will roll is 1 - 3. This way you can slip the die into regular Settles to slow them down when they get older! (Just make sure to remove it when you roll, unless you are on a lot of 2-6 resources. Actually, we used the die in regular settlers for a while, and it gave me quite the lead.....)

7) Finally, it introduces them to all the important concepts they need for "real" Settlers when they get older. All except the trading, card buying, placement, management of building, use of probablilty, and thinking parts of Settlers that is. But again, it is an "Introductory Gateway" game.

This has worked great for our family. I have had resounding demands from the kids to play it whenever they find out that I am trying to donate, sell, or give it away! This kind of popularity cannot be bought! (Unless it is still in print that is....)
