Following on from last year I have again drawn up a list of the most highly rated/popular designers on BGG.

Using a system of assigning points for boardgame rank, from 250 for the top rated game to 1 point for the game ranked 250 (ASL: Starter Kit #2 btw) I have drawn up the following list.

Enjoy.

1. Board Game Designer: Martin Wallace

Martin Wallace holds on to the top spot for another year. With Brass still solid at number nine, his railway trilogy all in the top forty and A Few Acres of Snow ignoring the hammering it has taken to stay in the top one hundred. Eleven games in the top two fifty altogether. He has pulled away from second place in what was a very close race last year but he has also not shown great form in the past twelve months. Discworld sits in the top three hundred but Aeroplanes is only just inside the top fifteen hundred games at the moment and the brand new P.I. has made no impact at all. The rest of the pack are still some way distant but they are closing and BGGers appear to be waiting for the next big Wallace game to get their juices flowing. That being said it was still a big win for Martin Wallace and he is by far our favourite designer.

Maybe the Mayans were right, the end of days does appear to be here. If I was doing this list over the past decade I think it is clear that Dr Knizia would have been top dog for a long, long time. Right now there is only one Knizia game in the top fifty and only four in the top one hundred. He has a dozen overall in the top two fifty and he even has two hundred and fifty one, Medici. Tigris & Euphrates is at number twenty but his biggest profile release of recent times, Star Trek: Expeditions is not inside the top one thousand and his most recent games such as Spectaculum are not even in the top four thousand. He has lost over two hundred points this year, by far the biggest drop of any designer, and he is on course to be swallowed up by the pack. He designs classics but according to us they are not quite timeless.

3. Board Game Designer: Vlaada Chvátil

No one else on this list has the consistency in top ratings that Vlaada Chvatil has in his top games. Through The Ages is at number two or three (stop changing) and he also has one of the massive hits of the past twelve months with Mage Knight at number eight. Space Alert, Galaxy Trucker and Dungeon Lords are all in top one hundred, the last two helped by recent expansions I am sure, and Dungeon Petz sits just outside. These successes have pushed him up the rankings and he is the hot designer of the moment. His biggest hits are always his deeper games but you can never tell what is comiing next from the man who also designed Bunny, Bunny, Moose, Moose and Pictomania. The one to watch in the next twelve months.

The first of the FFG designers in this list but far from the last. Five heavily thematic games in the top one hundred including both editions of Descent, Arkham Horror, the reworking of Cosmic Encounter and Sid Meier's Civilization. These games are all holding up strongly in the rankings suggesting that the FFG formula of variable experience and heavy themes is finding an audience. Descent 2nd Edition has made it to number thirty five and is his biggest hit and with expansions coming I am sure he will continue to be a front runner in our list.

The next FFG designer on the list but his list includes some of the slightly older games which helped to make FFG's name in coffin boxes; Starcraft, Tide of Iron, Middle Earth Quest and Runewars would put your back out in a rush. He also has credits for Battlestar Galactica which is at number twenty two and the new version of Descent. Add in Gears of War and Mansions of Madness and there is not a whole lot of cubes pushing going on but you could probably encircle the globe with tiny cards. FFG continue to put out highly successful games which make a splash and hold up in the rankings.

Last year Stefan Feld was at twelfth with no games in the top eighty. This year he has made the jump to a big time player. Castles of Burgundy has hit number twenty three and Trajan, despite not being too readily available, has broken the top fifty. Notre Dame, Macao, In the Year of the Dragon and Luna are all still ranking too. Luna is due a reprint after not being available for a while, is a better distribution deal all that is holding him back?

Hows can you argue with Agricola permanently a top three contender, Le Havre esconced in the top ten and his new big boy Ora et Labora in the top twenty? Gates of Loyang almost looks like a failure at only (?) number one hundred and fifty three. Bohnanza is also still hanging on while the two player Agricola (All Creatures...) has just hit the top two fifty and the new expansion could help that climb as well. If you want lots of counters and a mild headache then Uwe Rosenborg is your man.

A designer who consistently put out well regarded games, most often in collaboration with a partner. El Grande is strong at number sixteen and Princes of Florence is in the top fifty, he also has classics such as Tikal and Torres in the rankings. his newest game, Palaces of Carrara, is outside the top fifteen hundred at the moment but it may rise once it has a wider audience. Splotter do things their own way. They have released three top one fifty games in Antiquity, Indonesia and Roads & Boats which gains them a place on this list but did you know that they also designed the game ranker eight thousand and seventy one? Hit or miss they are always worth keeping an eye on. Their 2012 release, The Great Zimbabwe was controversial but it has hit the top thousand with limited availability and if it it picked up then it could see this design duo pushed up the rankings.
