For those that don't know Bruno Faidutti is a French game designer who has done lots of colaborations with other designers (including Alan Moon).

He has published his best of 2005/2006... that can be found at http://www.faidutti.com/index.php?Module=divers&id=437

I've turned his list into this geeklist (in the order he listed them) and quoted (in double quotes) what I felt are his relevant comments for each of the heavy and middle weight games catagories (he has too many in the light catagory for me to expend the full effort).

2006 Game of the Year!

"This small and unimpressive game appeals to all kind of gamers, be it children, casual or hardcore gamers. Hey! That’s my Fish! is a nearly abstract game ... The rules are clever and simple, the components are cute, and game itself is much more subtle than it first looks. With three or four players, it’s nasty and fast paced. With two players, it's fast paced and brain burning"

This is an amazing two player game and works well as filler with any number (it takes about five minutes to play).

Awful is such a strong word. The set-up time I'll give you, although I feel that's mitigated by the extremely simple rules. But the pieces? What would you have them be?

The thing I most like about this is that it plays well with different ages. You can play it as a tight abstract or pretend you're a penquin. How many games can say that? laugh

It should also be noted that, based on his description of the development process in a previous article, he and another Frenchman had a crack at the initial redevelopment and then the FF team changed a bunch of what the French team had done. So the final design is hardly something Brunno could call his own. He has stated numerous times that he is a big fan of the 'old American style' games and this falls squarely in this catagory.

Surely you're not implying he doesn't have an interest beyond just commenting on the game.

I was pretty disappointed with it after giving it about 3 hours at Origins. It looked great. It felt right. I was excited. But the rules were poorly written and the play became quite bogged down. Even the GMs who appeared to be promoting it couldn't quite get the rules right. After 3 hours the four of us *combined* had all of 1 victory point of the 30 available (it was mine
After it's been out for a while, I plan on revisiting this game. It might be worth another go. It sure looked nice and seemed to have some nice mechanics. Just seemed the play was not well put together or the fiddly part of the rules well presented.

A very challenging, heavy strategy game --- probably too heavy for Game of the Year. It should get a nomination, but given the history of SdJ selections, it will likely lose to a lighter design.

This will likely destroy any gamer cred I might have, but I have just never enjoyed Caylus. I can see, objectively, the mechanics and recognize that it is an interesting game, but I have never had fun playing it. I first played it with several German friends, and they were mixed on it, but basically positive. Since, the reaction has gone more to positive.

I think a big part of it is the overseer mechanic, which is strictly negative. It gives you no bonus, only messes with other players, and I don't care for that.

So I like some of the theoretical mechanics of this game but after one play I was not impressed to even play again. It seems quite mean spirited and I dont like some of the permit mechanics. I should wait for a few more playing but I'd rather play other games on this list that hooked me after one play. Maybe the right game for some groups though...

I love this game.. It's funny that you don't like the mean-spiritedness in this game (which is definitely there) but don't mention it in Caylus. Of course, it's funny that I ignore it the exact opposite way (loving Elasund, but not Caylus..)

Anyway, this is my favorite of the Catan games, and has played really differently everytime we get it out.

You're right. The provost abuse in Caylus is really annoying and I dont think it adds anything for me to the game. The reason I omit it is because we usually have as much fun without it in friendly FTF games. Once someone does it online to me, it sets the tone and it's much less fun for me. I usually have to retaliate and then it all goes downhill from there. Games where its discussed in advance help improve play and keep friends, but yes its still part of the game. Anyway, this was a great year for this game: glad I found it!

I recall some pretty negative comments by a lot of people when this one first came out. Something about LOTS of randomness and luck that pretty much threw any of your planning out the window. Not a bad thing really but if I recall, this was a fairly long game (2 hours +) which would make a lot of the randomness really painful. Can anyone back this up?

This game divided the East Tennessee Gamers quite dramatically between loving it and hating it. We didn't quite get into fisticuffs with one another, but this remains one of the most talked about games we've played.

In my opinion, this is a very fun civilization game that teaches the player that patience and planning can protect you from many dangers along the way and if you throw caution to the wind you are most likely going to pay for your carefree attitude.

And sometimes the bold do get rewarded for their stupidi..er, bravery..and make it safely to shore with their cargo intact.

Nice components, very evocative, with interesting decisions to make along the way.

I didn't care for this game with one play, but one play is hardly enough to appreciate a game.

My comment is that the number of cards and their organization seemed poor. Where we played it, there simply wasn't enough room.

Not that long, may be, but still lots of rules and, probably, a game difficult to grasp for whi is not used to american style war games.
I admit that I hesitated to put this one - and King's Progress as well - with "heavier games", but I wanted to have something more than just Caylus and Warrior Knights there, so I chosed the ones who felt the heaviest to me in the other games I wanted to list.
Also, Nexus Ops really felt to me like a lighter version of Axis and Allies, so it also ended here by a kind of assimilation with Axies and Allies.

I picked up a copy at Origins (where many felt it is the odds-on favorite for SdJ), read the rules, but have yet to play. Based on the rules, it appears to be just the kind of game that wins the SdJ --- medium strategy. It's sure to get a nomination, and its popularity suggests that it ought to be very competitive. I'm looking forward to giving it a try next weekend.

Bill you can play it for free on BSW. It took me a couple plays to get the hang of it online, but I really enjoy it now. There's something strangly satisfactory about playing your routes. the map work looks beautiful but is too compressed on the BSW version. A good medium game I could probably get the wife and family to play.

"... was not very well received by the hardcore gamers who dissect every new Alea game... surprise since the same gaming microcosm had highly praised Stefan Feld's former game, Roma, which had a similar feel – moderately complex and involved rules, strong theme, original systems, and heavy on luck. Don’t be fooled, this is a masterwork, with cleverly entertwined systems, and a stronger theme than most German games"

This is a quick game (about an hour) with meaningful decisions to make about your expedition placements and expansion (area control). The special powers you gain via the Patrons that you collect during the game allow for some additional flexibility in placement and in the decisions you can make.

I love a game with variable player powers and area control gameplay.

The only downside for me was that the theme definately felt pasted on.

Lady Violet seems the most powerful patron in my 1st play the person who won has used that winning strategy more than once. This lets you take a cube from the general supply and add it to your personal supply... so as you continue to acquire Lady Violet's you have a cube count advantage.

Not as powerful as Lady Violet, but more powerful out of the remaining 4 is Sir Brown which lets you play directly to the museum instead of the regions.

Will have to play again to see what happens when everyone is trying to focus on those two patrons...

Considering that neither of the two patrons you mentioned were dominant in the two games I played, I'd say that the patrons are actually rather well balanced. Or at least well enough. To me, it seems to be more of the case of getting the most out of your patrons rather than what they actually are.

Oh, it has a theme?

Lady violet we found to be the least useful, simply because by passing, you can stop additional placements since players only get one more round. Placing in the museum seems to us to be the most powerful, although not overly so by any means. Lady violet is effective when two or more players have her and the others do not, thus the two can keep placement open.

I really like this game and the variable powers seem quite well balanced.

I'm glad to see this one mentioned. It hasn't had much press, but it is a difficult proposition to market: a game about conquest that is not a wargame, but an area majority game. Also, and I don't know why Phalanx doesn't put more effort into cleaning them up (through playtesters for instance), the rules are an absolute mess.

But a good game nonetheless, that was my point.

Both Wits & Wagers and Deflection were winners of the 2006 Mensa Mind Games award.

Wits & Wagers is a trivia party game that plays best with a lot of players. Every player provides an estimate to the question and then everyone bets on which estimate is most accurate. The interesting part is that each answer has payout odds that increase the farther away that answer is from the other given answers. Part of the game is about your knowledge, part of the game is how well you know the other players (your opinions will be affected by different players depending on the category of the question) and part of the game is playing the odds.

My opinion is a bit biased but you should look at what others on the BGG are saying about it. It is the highest rated trivia game here on the BGG by a good bit:
