I was browsing through BGG when a thought popped into my head: how many BGGers are active/non-active military personnel who play wargames? I couldn't find a feature on BGG to do such a search, hence the raison d'etre for this Geeklist.

So if you are in active military service or are in the reserves or have retired from military duty, please post here together with a wargame. The wargame can be related to your military service, or your favourite wargame, or just one that you are currently playing.

I'll start off with myself. We'll see how it goes.

I could add two games, but I'll just go with the current one.

Active service in the Canadian Forces. 14 years as a Tactical Helicopter pilot and presently in the process of 're-modelling' my career by attending medical school.

I'm not aiming to be a surgeon (family medicine), but I've been in on a few ('Here, hold this heart . . . '). ;-)

Active duty from 1991-2000, wife still on active duty. She is an army pilot, I was a armor officer (two tank platoons including one of the platoons in the first M1A2 equipped company) and BN Scouts, then got made an Intel ossifer.

Served in 1st Cav and then various units in Panam and then Ft Bliss. Ended as an ROTC instructor at UTEP. I love troops and things that go BOOM! Still have my tanker boots and Stetson and spurs, and airborne wings.

-I was a wargamer long before my military service, but it did change my perception of games: I found the opposite of the conventional wisdom in the gaming community to be true on what makes a game "realistic". Games like Battle Cry where a commander has very limited control over who moves where are in my opinion closer to the reality of combat than most hex and counter games that allow players to move every piece a known distance every turn and calculate combat odds precisely. I'm not saying that makes games like Battle Cry better games, just closer to simulating the problems of leadership in combat.

Currently USAR. First commissioned in 1979, subsequently been in the USAR, the Mass. ARNG, Active Duty, back to the MAss. ARNG and finally back to the USAR.
I was called up out of the IRR for Operation Iraqi Freedom and decided to stay in troop units for a few more years before retirement.
I picked Tac Air because it hasn't been used yet and it includes the unit I served with in Germany during my active duty stint. It's the second unit over in the third row down -- the 1-8th FA (Lance).

As an old German Air Force (GAF) officer I spent about 14 years in the cockpits of jet fighters and scored about 2.000 hours flying time. Most of it in the RF-4E Phantom!

So Foxbat and PHANTOM is the real one for me, even if I saw T-37/ T-38 and PA-200 Tornado, too.

Played the game several times and had lots of fun. Still would like to reopen the game, even as a retired LtCol...
