Game by game account of my WBC 2013. I didn't keep a journal this year so I'm missing entire games from memory.

Looking over the list, I think the only things that stand out is that I wished I had gotten Trajan on the table, and that I had gotten in one or two more war games.

If you see anything I missed feel free to add a comment or send me an email.

SUNDAY

Rose and I arrived Sunday night and stayed off-site (we weren't registered for the pre-con). I took the opportunity to teach her to play Pax in a two handed game.

The first three event cards were all bulls bears, plunging us into a depression that lasted two thirds of the game. Still, she enjoyed it. She built a huge ranch that I never managed to nationalize or keep unrested and she won.

MONDAY

Rose and I showed up Monday morning and registered. I showed her around, and left her to read her book while I chatted up the Warriors of God GM. Then we finally got in a game of Pax, the two of us with Bob Sohn.

Bob won.

TUESDAY

Tuesday morning was Kingdom of Heaven with JR. IIRC, JR had read the rules but not played it before. I thought it best if we get in the first scenario, The First Crusade, which is three turns long and an excellent teaching scenario.

The one problem is that I don't know which is the best 'learning' side. The Crusader is the 'active' player, and gets a good look at the mechanics of marching and sieging, but the Crusader has a tough time winning this scenario. So we diced for sides and JR pulled the Crusaders.

The Crusaders came, made the mandatory right hand turn and took Antioch, and ran on south. There was little I could do with my '3' strategy rated Kerbogha as I had almost no three cards in the early going. The Crusaders rolled up in front of Jerusalem, called for surrender, and rolled the necessary 'six'. In the mean time I tried to recapture Antioch, but failed, and the Crusaders won the scenario.

People say this is tough for the Crusaders, but I'm 0-2 as the Muslim player...

With the 'learning' game out of the way, we turned to the second scenario. There are nine in the box, from the early crusades to the Mongol Invasion. I had played the first and last scenario, and I wanted to try them all in turn so I suggested the second scenario (the second crusade).

This is a six turn scenario. On the first three turns there is skirmishing going on between the Muslim powers and the Crusader states, with the Muslim player on the offensive. The Muslim player must secure a number of vp by the end of the third turn, if he does so he avoids a Christian auto victory, but triggers the arrival of the Second Crusade.

We rolled for sides and this time I drew the Crusaders.

JR took apart the Edessans and took Aleppo and Antioch. I tried to counter with scratch forces drawn from the southern kingdoms, but these got pretty heavily slapped around. Meanwhile, we both made diplomatic overtures to Damascus. I think my diplomats must have been sending cured hams to the court, as my efforts came to nothing, while JR's emissaries were welcomed in to sleep with the female relatives of the emir (he played a card that either gave him the alliance or helped him roll for it, I don't remember).

Finally, turn 4 rolled around. "Here we go," we thinks, "now I'll bring my big 30 point Crusader army to bear..." Unfortunately, to simulate the disastrous crossing of Asia minor by the crusaders, they get an extra roll on the attrition table when crossing over, both rolls on a column higher than usual. First roll ... six. Second roll ... six. OK, well not much I can do about that. I finish moving the crusaders for that impulse, and have to make another attrition roll for the move itself ... six.

I forget the circumstances, but I manage to make another attrition roll on their next impulse...six. I did manage to play a Crusaders Arrive card, so I did end up with something in that stack besides the reduced, sickly original crusaders, but it was tough.

While I was trying to retake Antioch, the puny Damascenes decide to poke on down to lightly garrisoned Jerusalem and tell them they should open the gates and surrender to their couple of thousand men, armed mostly with farming implements and ready to surrender themselves if Jerusalem doesn't surrender first. Call for surrender roll?...six! Jerusalem falls.

We played it out but at this point I needed Jerusalem, Antioch, and either Aleppo or the other three point city he took early on to win, and it was not to be. Big fun, both games, though the dice definitely turned against me the second game. Looking forward to trying the other scenarios.

WEDNESDAY

Played a game of this in the demo area Wednesday with Nick Richardson.

Please pre-order this game from www.multimanpublishing.com. I'm tired of playing demo copies, even though the maps and counters they have for demos are near-production quality.

I took the Viet Nimh this time, and though I've finally gotten the hang of playing the VN I came up short this game versus Nick's wily French. He held Anne Marie after the first turn was over which I think really cramped my efforts. I had some tough going in the mid game and finally came up short by two areas. I'm ready to play again.

A good game for Bob and I, with Bob nipping me in the end. However, when I was playing Glory later in the week, it turns out we were playing the Academy wrong (it's one thinker action after a turn where you Craftsman, not once after each Craftsman action). Always fun.

Rose went to study and David B. joined us for Traumfabrik, which apparently is called Dream Factory in the English edition?

Anyway, what a fun game! I was a big fan of the theme, which was assembling movies from various tiles that you bid on (it's a Kniza). The director tiles and the star tiles were named directors and actors, and each movie card that you tried to complete was a famous movie from the golden era of Hollywood. Apparently the later English versions doesn't have real stars or director's in them due to legal problems? So I was glad to be playing the German version.

Bob and I were both working on a masterpiece film, trying to max out it's point value so it would win bonus points for awards. I saved up for one of the last auctions where a tile I needed was up for bid. However, Bob knew this, and outbid me for it (but not after I accidentally overstated the amount of chips I had, and thought I had won it blush)

Bob ended up with the best overall movie, won a bunch of awards and the game. On the other hand, we were treated to an explanation of the David B. Traumfabrik tile selection "system", which might have been the best part.

Lot's of fun, I wouldn't mind owning a copy but I'm sure it's more than I'm willing to pay second hand.

THURSDAY

Thursday morning it was time for my one event for the week, the Wilderness War tournament. I hadn't missed one yet, and it looks like the end of the streak, as numbers were down this year and it looks like Keith is done GM'ing it.

My opponent was Grant LaDue, which might have been good copy for a write-up, as I had resigned from our mutual WBC team a couple of months ago, "The Iron Meeples". Even better copy if I had joined another team and made Wilderness War my team game, as WW was Grant's team game.

However, it was not to be. No ill will, or much of a game. Grant drew a succession of British reinforcement cards, and knows what he is doing. I would have had to been at the top of the French game or have some good die luck to come back, and I had neither. Once the VP total started to go against me, you could add recklessness to my sins, in a last ditch attempt to force him back on turn 4. That also went awry and I resigned.

Mandatory dice whine: I raided eight times as the French (1/3 chance of success) and didn't hit a single one.

FRIDAY

Friday morning was my one game of Angola for this con. Marty Sample, Rob Winslow, Volko Ruhnke and I squared off, drawing for sides:

MPLA - Volko
Unita - Marty
FNLA - Rob
FAPLA - myself

The opening draw gave us a pretty strong central position, though both FNLA and Unita had too many towns close to Luanda, and FNLA drew the southern cross roads that can help stall Unita.

Cabinda fell on turn 3 despite full reinforcements, and the squeeze was on. The Cabinda assault force cleared the jungle on their second try and the FNLA starting pressing. In the meant time Unita/FNLA managed to dominate the crucial coastal cities. In my one win as FAPLA I had managed to clear the strip in mid game, so I didn't like seeing this.

The late game was crazy, one turn was saved for us because MPLA ran out of victory tokens to give. Despite the fact that we kept fairly even on the victory track and the heroic efforts of the MPLA, we finally collapsed on turn 9. I never felt like we were doomed until late in the final turn, but we definitely had our work cut out for us.

7 Wonders hit the table a lot towards the end of the week. We played most games with Leaders, I don't think we used Cities at all. Some games also used boards from the Wonders Expansion Pack.

For these next three games we had a table in open gaming on Friday, where Rose, JR, and Tilda and I played (joined at one point by Jeff Coyle, iirc).

I don't remember the details from these three games, so I will have to wait for JR to post his AAR to steal info.

We took a break to go down to the vendor room, and when Dr. Rob was late returning we staged a coup and replaced him with a pair of Scotts, Scott Muldoon and Scott Blanton. Scott (M) replicated my feat from the earlier game, staging a solo topple on the first topple card.

Always a pleasure to see Scott Blanton, and it was nice to get a game in with Scott Muldoon, who I seem to read a lot of posts from but have never been in a game with.

Saturday it was time for Andean Abyss. Mark Mitchell, Bob Sohn, and Rob Winslow and I played. I asked for and received a random draw from only the AUC or the cartels, as I figured for my first game they would be easier to handle than the Government or FARC.

When the dust settled:
Mark - Govt.
Bob - FARC
Rob - Cartels
Me - AUC

Once I got into the game I really stared to enjoy it. The first card was a propaganda card, so that was a little odd. I spent the game gunning for FARC bases (my victor condition: more bases than FARC) and as I got familiar with the rules I transitioned from "what should I do" to "I don't get enough actions". Bob's FARC were hovering around their victory conditions while the other factions were not as close, so I clearly could just try and make life miserable for him without worrying too much about the other two factions.

As the second propaganda card appeared, no one had the victory though no one was far behind. However, the cartels had a resource boom so AFTER the 2nd card they were clearly in the lead. I looked forward to the next phase, as while I couldn't let go of FARC, I had to start helping to lean on the cartels or the game wouldn't last too long, depending on the next prop card. Mark had to leave at that point , and we packed it away. It had taken a while for us to get going, with Bob and I being totally new players, though I think the game should move at a fair clip with more experienced players.

Will definitely try again.
