It's been a while since I did one of these. Let's start by saying no organs were lost, no trips to the hospital though I do have a cold now, no three inches of gook on the A/C grill.

It's been three years since I'd won anything and I had two heartbreaking losses in the 2012 March Madness final and the 2012-3 PBeM March Madness semi, so I thought I might be due. I was correct but not exactly the way I thought it would be.

I got there the Friday night before the PreCon so I could make a trip to New Jersey on Saturday. Somebody's kid had a graduation party. I got roped into a Corn Hole tournament where my brother and I lost to two kids. An omen of sorts. It was a lot of driving in two days but it gave me a chance to test out my new car that I had just gotten the week before.

Sunday morning and the usual suspects were milling about looking for an excuse not to play in a tournament. Instead of Hannibal I went with a game of Angola with Marty Sample, Bruce Monnin and Mike Johnson. As the yellow player my intial town draw gave me several spots I could annoy my opponents just by holding. However holding places means you're not doing much attacking, and Marty (my partner) and I found ourselves falling behind. Around turn 6 we tried to attack and got squashed like bugs. After that we threw in the towel.

Angola is a great 4 player wargame. If a typical game was just a little shorter, it'd be on my Top 5 list. As it is, I've played at least one game at the last several conventions I've been at.

Monday morning time to play some tournaments. As I have the past few years I stuck with Warriors of God. I was on a roll as I beat a relatively new player in the first round and then beat a previous finalist in the second round. That got me a semifianl versus eventual winner Dave Long. And got beaten like the proverbial rented mule. I just couldn't get anything going. But that was enough to get a $10 certificate from MMP.

Tuesday while the auction was going on I had setup a game of Rebel Raiders with Greg Schmittgens. I had demoed this a few years back at GMT East and hadn't had a chance to try it sinc eit got printed. We only got about two years done as other things interrupted us but it was largely the good game I remembred. I think Greg was in trouble as the Union as I was able to keep him out of several keys spots, but my defensive shell was finally showing some cracks.

Tuesday night's heat was relatively uneventful. I wasn't much a factor until the end but it was too little too late.

Wednesday's heat was a bit more interesting. Going into the last convoy it looked like Rob Winslow, Bruce Young, Steve Caler and I had a shot. Plus Rob Schoennen's 11 year old son Trevor . Whoever won the seven point convoy was going to win the game IMO.

The kid declares Air and plays a 3 pointer as Allies. I hedge my bets and play Ultra which lets me go last. By the time it gets back to me the Axis has a ? and one point. Playing my 2 pointer will probably make the Allies the winner, but I won't get the convoy and in my mind the game. What I really want is a push. But what the heck I'll make a deal with Trevor. If I side with him, he gets the 7 pointer and I get the one and 2 points of spoils. The table feels this is a fair deal and the kid agrees.

The dice are rolled and the Allies win. And now the kid has to decide if it's time to stab me on the deal. To be honest I think the game is over and he's won, so I'm not too hard on him. He screws me and gives me just the one pointer. Turns out I was right and the kid won and the stab had no real effect.

Largely a non-factor this year. A second and two thirds. I didn't play in the 4th heat, which is good becasue I had to turn at least 20 people away due to no games. PEOPLE BRING A COPY OF THE GAME!!!!

Once again I got to watch the semis (as GM) on Sunday instead of play. Thi year Jeff Mullet avoided going home with no wood as he pulled out a win over regulars Ed Kendrick and Jaimie Tang.

I gave the Mulligan round a shot this year. The battle was the French first position at Rollica. A French counterattack on my British cavalry went horribly wrong when my opponent blew the roll and I was quickly able to get a 3 flag to zero lead. I needed two more flags and look I have two infantry units inching their way toward victory hexes. I lose two flags in the process but I get to the two spots and just have to hang on for one turn. Unfortunately the French has the one card that truly hoses me- Short Supply. That made it a race between me picking up the 5th flag I didn't think I'd need to fight for and the French knocking me off the hill. The French won that race and I lose.

Thursday is team game day. Every year I get through the first pod of three games, but something always goes wrong in the second.

This year got off to a good start. I decided I was going to bid a flag for the Carthaginians at Cannae. I won the the first two games, then the third game I had to bid two flags. I lost that by one (meaning the extraflag hurt), but 2-1 with a close loss was enought to advance.

Second pod I'm up against Dan Dolan Jr. OK, he's hardly a kid, I think he's even got a son at this point. Bu he's beaten me before. Second round is Caralis and again I stuck with Carthage. At one point Dan was almost able to surround my cavalry on my right. But I had the one card tha let me slip out of the pocket Dan was closing. I was able to coemback from there.

The pod came down to the third game. If I win, I'm finally in the semis. If I lose close I'm in the semis. Unfortunately my opponent is former champ Bill O'Neal, it's not going to be easy.

Early on a warrior charge from my left looked like it was going to break even until I whiffed a die roll and he grabbed a three flag lead. A desperation Elephant charge netted me two flags, but he also got two flags and I need to catch up. We then spent the next 15 minutes throwing rocks at each other, waiting for the right cards. I finally get a Double March card that would have possibly given my heavies a charge to victory. But my right is weak and I have to respond to Bill's attempts to pick off the last flags he needs. Sure enough Bill finishes the job without my charge. (Bill went on to win the tourney, congrats Bill!)

It's a dice rolling contest. I have no chance. Except today. . . .

The fabulous foursome struggled through without one member Dennis Nicholson. Dennis reads the charts, so I took over this year. MArk Yoshikawa played a pretty steady game and worked his way up to 7 under. I was all over the place. Eagle here, bogie there. Going into 15 I'm three under. Suddenly I get hot and make three birdies in a row while Yoshi bogie 17. That left us both at 6 under and we are both in the finals, knocking out a bunch of people at -5, including some guy named Reiff.

As I stepped up to the first hole of the final a wave of emotion overcame me as I realized I finally got to roll the big fuzzy dice. I pull myself together and birdie the first hole and a skin! Ubnfortunately I did little after that and wound up outrolling Yoshi for third.

I've done well the last two tourneys I played in. This year got off to a good start as I got my preferred A defense with a decent bench. I got to 3-0 in my bracket with 1966 Texas Western until my dice disappeared vs Roger Taylor. I was down by as many as 31 before I made the score somewhat respectable.

WBC: The Game is being put together by the Greenville Mafia guys though I think Bryan Collars and Josh Githens are doing the bulk of the work. I played it at Prezcon and the end game needed work. I played again at WBC and I think that problem is fixed. You play tourney after tourney but make sure you eat and sleep or you might wear yourself down. I'm not sure what the non-WBC crowd will think, but I think there's enough of a game for the WBCers to love it. Just be careful of the Stein card.

Another cards and dice wargame. What could possibly go wrong?

The tourney was set up to play 4 games and if you win three you advance. I got off to a 2-1 start and the key 4th game was against Peter Eldridge. By coincidence Peter had beaten me for the Sportsmanship award by one vote. I wondered aloud wouldn't it have been interesting if our game turned into a big brawl with the police coming in and taking away to jail the Sportsmanship Award winner and the second place guy. :-) Fortunately for me I was able to win that game and advance.

In the round of eight I swept aside poor Jim Bell who never got anything going. In the semis I faced returning champ Jeff Cornett while Bruce Reiff faced 10 year old Aidan Powers. OK, we know how that one's going to go. I played a strange game with Jeff as he hit me early but didn't get flags to show for it. I spent the rest of the game in a sort of hit and hide strategy. That worked for a victory so it was time to face. . .what do you mean Bruce lost??????

Yes Aidan had beaten the mighty Plaque Man rather handily. Bruce warned me the kid is good. Every kid I've ever played in Battle Cry turns to be very aggressive. I was hoping to use that.

Adian picked First Bull Run. Even enough for me and I took the Union for the 2nd time that day. We fought it out on my right and when the smoke cleared Aidan had a 3-2 lead and had wiped out my flank.

But I had quietly formed my infantry in the middle. I figured at some point the kid was going to get troops to the ridge in the center and when that happened I would spring my Double March card. Sure enough Aidan cooperated and I charged. Those that know me know having the card is one thing, making the die roll is another. It took me two turns and I need the Battle Cry card but I got it done for the win.

The only way to end a convention. Well Ok I've got the Ingenious semis Sunday AM, but this is the unofficial end. This year my team ran away and I was first going into my table's playoffs. (Translation: The also rans realized they could get it over with quick if they kept playing me.) I thought I had a real shot of advancing (Translation: Oh crap, I might have to stay up!), but unfortunately it turned out my opponent had a bruiser and he took out my best player in the first game and that was it for me. (Translation: WHEW!!!)
